UPDATING YUKONERS – Education Minister Tracy-Anne McPhee, Mary Tiesen, the Yukon government’s American sign language interpreter, and Dr. Brendan Hanley are seen left to right at Thursday morning’s COVID-19 briefing.
The recent outbreaks of COVID-19 appear to be on the wane in the Yukon, but it’s too soon to relax public precautions.
The recent outbreaks of COVID-19 appear to be on the wane in the Yukon, but it’s too soon to relax public precautions.
That was the message from Dr. Brendan Hanley during his weekly virus update new conference, held this morning.
Case counts remain at 59, with no new cases in the past two days. One case remains active in the Yukon.
“That’s good news after the cluster of cases we’ve had,” said Justice and Education Minister Tracy-Anne McPhee, who also participated in the news conference.
Hanley wanted to remind the public to renew their focus on the safe six plus one, particularly with Christmas closing in.
Forty-four new cases have been recorded since mid-October, with 34 of those in Whitehorse.
Most of the cases over the last few weeks have involved younger adults from 20 through 39 years old, Hanley said.
Most of those cases have come from exposures to known locations around Whitehorse, and most are from close contacts through work and home settings.
Hanley said he was releasing those statistics in an effort to maintain a balance between protecting the privacy of individuals, and serving the public interest.
That demographic is the same one in which most cases across Canada are occurring, he said, making it a priority to reach out to them.
Interestingly, it doesn’t appear the Yukon cases are crossing most demographic lines otherwise, including ethnic sectors. That’s somewhat different than in other regions of the country.
Hanley said he wanted people to continue to double-down on restricting their contacts to people only within their social bubbles over the next few weeks.
That renewed focus is particularly important to consider, he said, with the news that vaccines might become available as early as January.
People might want to relax their guard knowing the vaccines are coming, but Hanley said it will be some time, certainly months, before control measures can start to be lifted.
“We are seeing no cases associated with international travel, of course, or domestic travel,” Hanley said. “We’re seeing little risk of transmission, but we can’t discount it.
“We have new energy and new hope with the arrival of the vaccines. We can see the finish line, but we’re not there yet. We are still at risk of seeing the curve go up.”
McPhee said more charges have been laid for violating the pandemic guidelines in recent weeks, including one charge for failing to wear a mask where required.
She declined to release details on that, other than to call it “an egregious case”.
The government and health officials are still trying to use education and information to address breaches of the regulations, and are saving enforcement for last-resort scenarios, McPhee said.
One charge was laid for a person or persons refusing to stop at the border, she said, but again, no details were provided.

@Do the math
Get over yourself. You actually think I'm that stupid?
My question is still valid. Please define "months". We were told the vaccine would be the solution. Now, they are saying it is not the solution - it is the "beginning".
How many months do "they" expect restrictions to continue?
It's a valid question. Since you are so smart, perhaps you can answer it with all your supposed "math" prowess.

@ Max Mack
You answered your own question. Moderna still hasn't been authorized for use in Canada but we will likely see that happen by the end of this week or next. Then the vaccine has to get here and land in the 3 freezers we just got so that pushes us into January already.
If you got your first shot in mid January, you'd get your second shot in mid Feb (you following along with how the months are progressing?)
It typically takes a few weeks for the body to build immunity after vaccination so count on another month or so into mid March.
To summarize it's December. If you get your first shot in a couple weeks, it with be MONTHS before you are protected.

So initially our overlords were saying that we had to have a 60% vaccination rate, combined with the people who had been infected and recovered, we would achieve herd immunity.
Now they are stating we need a Vaccination rate of 75%. Very hard to achieve given that kids will not even be offered the Vaccine.
Latest surveys are saying 35% will accept the Vaccine as soon as they can, 35% will wait and see what happens, 35% want nothing to do with it.
It seems to me that our Government has no intention to relaxing controls given this reality.

I hear there's a case of sniffles in Watson Lake... I think we better shut down the highway and keep everyone inside.

It won't be too long now as it looks like the north will be vaccinated very quickly. I am very concerned, however, that once the adult population is fully vaccinated (except those who choose not to) we will still cower in fear. Once the vax is fully available, WE NEED TO OPEN UP!

Mad Max: the Libs are having a ball playing with our freedoms and liberties. I as a Military Vet am getting pretty sick and tired of it. Soon, I'm just going to p*** it off and take my chances of getting arrested. I can assure the sitting judge now that I won't be paying any fines. So, be prepared to send me to jail.
After all the violent criminals let go because of Covid, I'm sure there will be lots of room left for me.

Yesterday, he told us that the vaccine would available in late December, now he tells us it may be available as early as January. Does he even know? Or is he just guessing? Also, he's saying that even after the vaccine is administered, normal won't be for several months after. Thanks for the great news, that should buck up our spirits. Something's telling me he, the premier and government staff don't know anything until they read it in the morning media, than just parrot the info to us. Come on guys, were paying you to give us some info and hope. After all, your getting paid, while many others are losing jobs and businesses.

So, do we need Dr. Hanley telling us the same thing every day - "practice the safe 6 + 1? Can't one of Silvers staff do that? How about giving us some medical knowledge about the virus and up to date treatments for it. How about telling us what the medical community is doing for those who have and had the virus. Why is he keeping us in the dark. All we know about the virus to date is the 6 + 1 steps to avoid it. Getting kinda sick and tired of hearing him parrot the same thing every day.

I'm glad to see Dr. Hanely backpedaling the messaging a bit. I believe the vaccines have been oversold by the politcians because they must constantly be telling we citizens that they are on the job to deal with this pandemic. My view is there have been too many elected people blathering on about something they know nothing about inflating expectations about a cure "just around the corner". Already we are hearing evidence of how some people believe COVID will end on New Year's Day- because it won't be 2020 anymore. So it follows that many will believe they are invincable once they get their dose in the arm so they can abandon the safety protocols and go back to pre-pandemic life, and the third wave will begin.

Hanley says: "months, before control measures can start to be lifted".
Please define "months". Two months? Three? Four? Six? Nine? Twelve?
Why? The vaccine will be available in January according to the words out of your own mouth. At least 1000 people can be vaccinated in a day. That's +30,000 people in about one month.
When is the fake emergency going to end?

Some Public Safety context for those eating up the fear porn like like grazing sheep.
We have far more UNSOLVED homicides in the Yukon than fatalities due to the China virus.
Never mind, too uncomfortable THAT conversation...eh?
Maybe we should take those roadside testing machines...into WGH maternity ward too?
Ya know "public safety"... Josey...BOLE, oh yeah forgot.
Carry on Comrades, and glad we had this opportunity "together" to reveal just how disposable our first world freedoms are.
Graves all over the planet should have soldiers spinning like a rotisserie, with their ghosts grabbing arms...and returning home.
...to fight for our first world freedoms, SMASHING tyranny.

We don't need any these harmful restrictions anymore. Time to calm down and use clear thinking.
Look up this analysis from The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, entitled: "Chief medical officers are a bigger danger to Canadians’ health than COVID-19".

Let's have a Covid antibody test issued in Whitehorse and see what the real spread of infection looks like. There's a good chance the virus has already made the rounds through the community. Alas, no one expects that kind of forward thinking and honesty from bureaucrats and their politically appointed medical officers.

I'm not sure how 59 cases 20 of those in the last 3 weeks is a dwindling amount.

Of course it is. And just like Emergency Measures Act, extended to infinity, nothing will change.
