Kennel cough closes shelter
A doggie cold has closed the Humane Society Yukon's animal shelter until at least next Wednesday.
A doggie cold has closed the Humane Society Yukon's animal shelter until at least next Wednesday.
In an interview this morning, shelter administrator Barb Harris said a mom and her litter of pups has a possible case of kennel cough, or, as it's known scientifically, canine infectious tracheobronchitis.
'Basically, it's a cold,' she said in an interview.
Although the dogs are in isolation and the cold is not believed to have spread to the general population, Harris said the shelter is taking precautionary measures in closing its doors for the next few days. It's also vaccinated the other dogs in the shelter.
The mother and her pups are being treated with antibiotics.
'Isolation (unit) has been isolated,' she said.
Harris noted that while kennel cough isn't a serious problem, there was some concern for the puppies who seemed quite lethargic for a day. They've since perked up.
If there's no case of kennel cough in the main part of the Tlingit Street shelter by next Wednesday, it will be reopened.
