The trial of a man facing two counts of attempted murder was delayed Tuesday when one of 14 jurors asked to be excused for health reasons.

Justice Leigh Gower of the Yukon Supreme Court asked the juror why she hadn't made the request Monday during the jury selection. That's when he excused some 60 other potential candidates for a variety of reasons, including health issues.

The woman told Gower she suffers from anxiety, which prevented her from speaking up Monday morning.

In explaining his decision to excuse the juror to the defence lawyer and Crown prosecutor, Gower pointed out the woman was shaking noticeably when he brought her into the courtroom to explain her request.

After Gower excused the woman, he instructed the sheriff to do the paper work necessary to allow staff to gather 10 more people from the streets to form another jury pool, from which a man was selected this morning.

The jury now consists of nine women and five men.

They received instructions from the judge late this morning, heard an opening statement from Crown prosecutor Keith Parkkari, and began hearing evidence from a custodian at the Madley General Store in Haines Junction.

Christopher Cornell is accused of eight criminal charges, including attempting to murder RCMP Cpl. Kim MacKellar and conservation officer Shane Oakley by shooting at them with a rifle during a high-speed chase after a robbery at Madley's.
