The Queen's Canadian flag was raised in Whitehorse Monday in a ceremony at sunrise in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the ascension to the throne by Queen Elizabeth II.

"For six decades, Her Majesty has served as the Canadian head of state with dignity and grace, and the Diamond Jubilee is an opportunity to recognize her remarkable reign,” Commissioner Doug Phillips said.
"This event is also an occasion for all Yukoners to reflect on the traditions and history of our territory and our country.”
Bob Cameron, the administrator of the Yukon, represented Phillips, while Health and Social Services Minister Doug Graham attended the flag-raising on behalf of Premier Darrell Pasloski.
They joined other Yukoners at Monday's event to celebrate Her Majesty's ascension to the throne on Feb. 6, 1952.
Also in attendance were the RCMP, Royal Canadian Legion members, veterans, cadets and Canadian rangers.
"As Canadians and Yukoners, we have a lot to be thankful for, including strong and stable governance, and Her Majesty has unfailingly represented this principle,” Pasloski said.
"When Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne, Yukon was still a young territory in terms of the development of responsible government. This event gives us an opportunity to reflect on all that has happened in our territory, our country and our world since 1952.”
Diamond Jubilee celebrations will take place in the Yukon throughout the year, and Yukoners are encouraged to take part.
Commemorative medals will be awarded throughout the year to deserving Yukoners who have made significant contributions to their community and nation.
People are invited to nominate anyone they believe is eligible. Nomination forms are available online or print copies can be obtained from MLAs' offices.
A book of congratulations was launched Jan. 1 and is available in the Government of Yukon Administration Building for those who wish to send messages to the Queen.
Pages from the book will be available in Yukon communities later this year.
