Environment Yukon is reminding all Yukoners that bears are out and about and looking for food from any source.
Environment Yukon is reminding all Yukoners that bears are out and about and looking for food from any source.
The best way to prevent a negative encounter with the animals is to minimize bear attractants in your yard, campsite or cabin.
"Bears are reward-driven, and there is nothing more rewarding than an easy meal,” the department said in a statement Tuesday.
Last Saturday evening, conservation officers darted and relocated a black bear which had knocked over a Granger subdivision wheelie bin looking for a full-meal deal.
It was the third bear incident reported on the Environment Yukon incident map for this season.
"Prevention is the best way to manage attractants,” Environment Yukon said.
"Relocation is a better option than killing a bear that is no longer wary of humans, but can still result in the bear's death if it winds up in another bear's territory or cannot find good food sources.”
WildWise Yukon, created earlier this year, is helping to expand public awareness through research, education, outreach and other activities with a view to mitigating human-wildlife conflicts.
