BUSINESS SUFFERS MAJOR THEFT – Bicycles are seen this morning outside Cadence Cycle on Wood Street.
About $54,000 worth of items, including 16 bicycles, shocks and hydration packs, were stolen from Cadence Cycle over the weekend.
About $54,000 worth of items, including 16 bicycles, shocks and hydration packs, were stolen from Cadence Cycle over the weekend.
The theft occurred sometime between 6 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 a.m. Sunday, when a passerby called the RCMP to report broken glass at the front of the Wood Street store.
Owner Dean Eyre said late this morning he was informed of the break-in by police Sunday morning.
He arrived at the shop to find broken glass and some disarray, he said.
“It was a pretty comprehensive theft, I would say,” he told the Star. “About a third of our inventory.”
All the bikes are high-end or specialized, including four various sizes of Stump Jumpers, two Camber bikes, one P20 BMX, two Banshes, four Rocky Mountain bikes, one Salsa bike, one Soda bike and one Cadet BMX bike, according to the RCMP.
Eyre said he should be able to receive insurance money for them if they’re not recovered.
Some hand tools were also stolen, likely to disassemble the bikes as quickly as possible, Eyre said. As well, about $150 in cash was taken from the till.
Earlier this year, the shop had a theft in the yard – “quite a haul,” Eyre said. The business got all those bikes back.
While some service bikes are stored outside, they’re kept locked every night, as are the sheds.
“This is the first time they’ve ever broken into the shop,” he said, adding he’s trying to be optimistic about the bikes’ return.
The tenant who lives above the shop was out of town.
The store doesn’t have an alarm system.
“We’re going to add one of those now,” Eyre said. “You try and hope that people are a little more honest than they are, I guess.”
Whitehorse RCMP Const. Dean Hoogland said police are still investigating.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the police at 667-5551.

Welcome to the first chapter of the story:
How a cute little town with nice people and unlocked doors transforms into a "would be Vancouver".
Believe me: That's just the beginning...

One of the commandments, Thou shall not steal - not I would be embarrassed. Give your head a shake June and give up the commentary.

Dean is one of the most giving and thoughtful business members in this community. These thieves are ruthless--may karma pay them back and may these bikes be recovered. So sorry your business keeps getting targeted.

June, while I appreciate your age and your right to an opinion, spare yourself the embarrassment and stop posting your incoherent ramblings.

Wow, quite a crime filled night. I had a friend come into work this morning with a black eye and beat up face, he was apperently mugged that night somewhere downtown when two men snuck up and attacked him. I've always felt like this was a realatively safe city, but lately I'm not so sure.

June, you don't steal because you'd be embarrassed if caught? What does that say about your morals and ethics? You shouldn't steal because ITS NOT YOURS!

Its just another sign of the times.. it is very naive of Mr. Eyre to think anyone won't steal the eyeballs right out of his head these days.
I don't steal..but not because of any moral high ground, but because I know everyone in town over 50 and the embarrassment would be crushing to me. Most people though..aren't embarrassed..these thieves are going to sell those bikes at give away prices, and the folks who buy them are the ones paying $1,500. a month for a roof, working two jobs at 11. bucks an hour..and they go to church on Sundays.. this Sunday they're going to say.. thanks God for the bike, i needed one and couldn't afford it..
On the other side of that coin.. if b and e's keep up.. we soon won't have a bike shop or any other small home grown enterprise.
