DAWSON CITY – The Robert Service School gymnasium has turned into a COVID-19 vaccination clinic for the rest of this week.
Beginning Tuesday, people arrived to get their first dose of the Moderna medication.
Premier Sandy Silver, who represents the Klondike riding, received his shot that day.
Afternoon appointments went smoothly, but those after 5 p.m. found themselves having to wait outside the school in -32 C temperatures before joining the lineups in the foyer.
Once inside, the process was very smooth.
People were called to enter the gym according to their pre-registration times.
Inside, they were quizzed about their health status, and given information about the vaccine and a health card. They waited in well-spaced seats for one of the seven stations to become available, and were then given their shot.
Following that, as is standard in all vaccine situations, they had to wait for 15 minutes in seating at the left side of the room in case of a reaction of any kind before departing, taking with them the card they will return with to get filled in when the second dose becomes available.
Meanwhile, in Whitehorse, COVID-19 vaccination clinic is now open to Yukon residents aged 60 years and more.
The change was announced Tuesday morning via social media on the Yukon government websites.
It’s the second change to the eligible ages in less than a week following controversy over the lack of people signing up for appointments over the internet and telephone.
Last weekend, the government changed the eligible ages from 70-plus to 60-plus.
Many of the appointment slots are still going unfilled, creating the opportunity to expand the vaccine process.

Stop making excuses for poor leadership Ben. She jeopardized the health and the lives of the community by her actions. It is not about the intent but rather the effect of her behaviour that matters - She communicated loud and clear that the rules do not matter when you have the power to define the exceptions to them and therefore defining the number 1 problem in the Yukon government - The rules apply to thee but not to me - Do as “you” are told monkey!

Sarah - Pauline Frost is from Old Crow, and she's a member of Vuntut G'wichin. I'm pretty sure her receiving the vaccine in her home community was more of a gesture of solidarity and encouragement for people in her riding, rather than some sinister way to jump the vaccine line and get ahead of everyone.

Pauline at the very least should have gotten her vaccine later in Whitehorse. She lives in Whitehorse. She should be staying right out of the community while health orders are in place. Sandy could have set an example by getting his shot later in Whitehorse as well. I work in a community close to Whitehorse but live in Whitehorse. When I asked if I could get it during the community visit, I was told NO - to get it where I live. So why are they different?

Yukon Health is doing an excellent job with the covid vaccinations.
Once again we have benefited from the generosity of the federal government and Canadian taxpayers.

Good god the first two comments say it all about this site. Every once in a while I peek at the comments and they are always the same. Railing away about First Nations, outsiders, YG. tmyk you have got to be a yucon party employee, you never miss a chance to bad mouth the government, never anything positive always critical with no ideas on how to do things better.

TMYK: Comon man. I'm not a liberal, but this comment is going a bit too far. They took time out of their busy schedule to go to their home ridings to get the vaccine. What does it matter what part of the line up they were in.

So Sandy and Pauline each made the trip to their ridings to make sure they were among the first to get the vaccine.

What a spectacle they are making out of this. Makes you wonder if the liberals are up to something in the background and using this as a front!
