It’s 90 more days for the state of emergency

With a territorial election looming, the Yukon government has extended the territory’s state of emergency for another 90 days.

By Whitehorse Star on March 3, 2021

With a territorial election looming, the Yukon government has extended the territory’s state of emergency for another 90 days.

The move was announced during this morning’s weekly COVID-19 briefing by Premier Sandy Silver with little fanfare.

The extension comes with no new cases of the virus reported for the second consecutive week, making the timing somewhat puzzling.

When Silver was asked point-blank about the timing of the election by a reporter from The Rush radio station, he responded with a curt “I’m not here to talk about the election.”

In a news release following the briefing, the government stated “this extension is critical to supporting the health, safety and economic well-being of Yukoners, and ensures that all ministerial orders enacted under the state of emergency remain in place, including the requirement for those entering the territory to self-isolate for 14 days.”

As has been the case in recent weeks and months, Silver and Dr. Brendan Hanley, the chief medical officer of health, doubled down on the importance of following the Safe Six Plus One for unknown months to come, as well as stressing the importance of Yukoners getting vaccinated.

Both men bristled somewhat when questioned about their fixation on vaccines and the importance of getting more people to come out to the clinics.

The focus is confusing, since they also were praising Yukoners for their very-willing acceptance of the shots.

In fact, the government booking system has crashed repeatedly as it was overwhelmed by demand in the last two weeks.

On Monday, the Whitehorse clinic processed 1,000 people, Silver said.

It’s expected the clinics, at the Yukon Convention Centre, will handle an average of 850 people a day or more, he said.

The number of people vaccinated Yukon-wide is approaching 12,000, meaning nearly half of the adult population in the territory has been vaccinated at least once.

According to the news release, as of the end of the day on Monday, there had been 17,168 doses of the Moderna vaccine administered in Yukon. This number includes 11,503 first doses and 5,665 second doses.

“Vaccines are our pathway out of this (the pandemic),” Silver said.

He noted the Yukon is “months ahead” of the rest of Canada in its vaccination rollout.

The premier was questioned about the need to keep the rollout at the highest priority level in light of those numbers. He objected to the notion the government is trying to “oversell” the vaccines, or “flogging them too hard.”

“No, we’re not flogging a dead horse,” he said with a touch of irritation.

Hanley echoed those sentiments, but added that health officials were aware that an undefined proportion of the population was “vaccine-hesitant.” He didn’t make an attempt to put a number to those who were reluctant to embrace the program.

“We know people are hesitating,” he said. “It’s a reality.”

That’s why the government continues to promote its vaccine program at every opportunity, Hanley said. It’s an effort to reach those people and persuade them to line up for a shot regardless of their concerns.

Both Silver and Hanley were on the receiving end of a number of pointed questions from the media this morning in an unusually intense grilling.

For the third straight week, Hanley and Silver were asked to provide the numbers on how well the vaccine program is doing.

The duo has released numbers on how many vaccine shots have been carried out – but hasn’t broken them down by community. Nor have they provided an overall percentage of vaccine acceptance in the adult community.

Silver said he isn’t interested in making the community numbers public.

He said doing so would pit “communities against each other,” and he isn’t willing to follow that “divisive” route.

“I won’t pit communities against each other,” he said.

Both he and Hanley once again declined to provide any framework or benchmarks on when Yukoners could possibly see the health restrictions begin to be lifted.

Hanley acknowledged that people are becoming “fatigued” with the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, but exhorted them to be patient and hang in a while longer.

“We’re in a nebulous time,” Hanley said. “We’re alway managing the risk of importation (for COVID-19). Our strategy has always been risk-based.”

He pointed once again to the potential danger of the so-called variants of the virus that are cropping up all over Canada as a reason to be cautious.

Silver said “we see the finish line, but there are variables we can’t control and we’re not going to speculate.”

Brendan Hanley is just following “Dr” Bill Gates’ decrees. Bill Gates, the vaccine salesman, literally owns the WHO, and here is what Bill says about prolonging the covid scamdemic:
“Bill Gates Says the Pandemic Will Last Until 2022: 2 TSX Stocks to Buy”
https://ca.news.yahoo.com/bill-gates-says-pandemic-last-130015883.html
The real question is, why do the Yukon Libs uncritically accept such decrees, despite evidence of the WHO’s conflict of interest.

The lockdowns have done way more harm than the virus. Obviously these restrictions aren’t about public health, they’re about controlling populations to make the fleecing easier for the overlords.

It’s a historical fact that authoritarian regimes are more easily installed by increments, by men claiming to be ‘helping’ the people. The best way to end these insane restrictions is to stop complying.

Living in the penalty box until vaccinated was the deal. More than a year of following all the rules. Supported the vaccine. Good little citizen. Hands are parched from all the sanitizer.

Personally, I’ll be marking the day of my second vaccine dose, adding the recommended two weeks for it to settle in, and then I’m done. Whatever the finer points, the legal justification for considering every citizen a threat to one another by default evaporates two weeks after the second dose. Confident that it would be almost impossible to enforce emergency measures against a vaccine-compliant citizen and will take my chances with the toothless tiger that is YG. All the way to the supremes, if necessary.

Removing the track and trace app, taking a break from the news, hugging my friends and family again, travelling, flying... all of it.
There’s nothing left on the government’s score card after that. Thanks to the healthcare professionals and a happy retirement to Dr. Hanley (in the next year or so, I assume). Well deserved, seriously.

Time to take freedom back. Will be doing it through the actions in my everyday life. No big fuss, just back to normal. And that’s all it has to be. Only a life well lived is one worth losing in the process.

50% of Yukoners have already received at least their first vaccine shot. At least 20% of the population probably already have natural immunity. Those under 18, for which the moderna vaccine has not been approved, but who are also least likely to become sick from "the covid", account for about another 22% of the population.

All told, ~ 92% of the population has either had the first shot, is naturally immune or is almost impervious to any serious covid effects.
Summer is coming when coronaviruses lay low.
There is no reason to extend the "emergency" any longer. End the fake emergency now!

Actually I have a VERY high regard for the rights of others. Disagreement and discussion and others' opinions are important to me. People should get a sign, file a court case, organize a protest, whatever, or better yet, run for public office! ... Just stop the constant griping and whining. Almost a year now, and the same complaints and criticisms about Silver and Hanley, some maybe deserved, many not. The vaccinations are underway, and the 90 days referred to will be at the same time pretty much anyone who chooses to get vaccinated will have 2nd dose. I get it - we're missing our friends and family who live elsewhere, we're missing winter vacations and hopefully restrictions will loosen in the next few months, but Canadians in other places get vaccinated (remember? almost all - if not all cases here - resulted from travel). But honestly, I had no idea there was so little tolerance/patience/kindness/generosity in this community until this last year.

@ Cause and Effect: Your pandering is little more than feel-good meandering. It must feel good to affirm your biases without any real evidence to do so.

For example, you conflate the manipulation of an alleged pandemic with the idea that people believe that Silver and Trudeau created the pandemic. This is a stupid idea.

What people are saying is that Silver, Hanley, and Trudeau are using the situation for their benefit, the benefit of their agenda. This should be apparent to you or anyone else with the basic intelligence to ask, why are we doing this? What is the evidence? Can you show me the evidence?

We have seen good quality evidence that lockdowns are associated with worse outcomes related to the Covidization of the people. So, you and the other snake-oil pedlars can go sell your wares, elsewhere.

Then there is the “FACT” that the lockdowns have caused way more harm
Than good. So, maybe you can take your cohort to an island somewhere and you can practice your self-aggrandizing, bullying, segregating, social-distancing, fake-pandemic, fear mongering governance to see what you end up... ***Only one person has died though!***
The reason we haven’t seen more spread here is because of the restrictions we have in place. Couple that with Yukoners being geographically spread out. It’s a the cause and effect scenario, the safe six has lead us to a very sweet spot but had we know had these rules in place we would have likely seen dozens or hundreds of deaths had the virus gained foothold in one of the extended care facilities.

Now to dispel some of the fake news circulating social media from the Koolaid drinking smooth brains.

***It's just theFlU!***
Anywhere between 2-8k Canadians die of the flu every year. COVID has taken 22k Canadian lives in a year. That’s with the restrictions in place.

***Mask don't work!***
Notice how seasonal influenza is almost non-existent right now? Guess why? Masks and the rest of the safe six have prevented the typical seasonal transmission.

***99.9% Recovery!***
False. Mortality is between 1 and 2% and higher in some countries. Many who have had COVID suffer irreversible damage to their brain, heart, lungs. Most have issues with blood clots. Lesser side effects include fatigue, shortness of breath, cough, joint pain, chest pain, muscle pain or headache, fast or pounding heartbeat, loss of smell or taste, memory, concentration or sleep problems and
rash or hair loss.

***Sandy Silver is taking my freedom***
No matter what the Facebook bots tell you, Sandy Sliver and Trudeau didn’t orchestrate a global conspiracy with literally every single country to oppress some slack jawed hick in the Yukon. They just didn’t.

***The Liberals are failing!***
All three parties in the Legislature voted in favour of the state of emergency and the restrictions, even those they still chirp from the sidelines during question period.

The Yukon is going to be one of the first jurisdictions on the planet with the vaccine, we have 21,097 vaccinated right now, that’s half of us! Highest percentage in the country.

The sun is out, snow is melting and we are headed in the right direction. You should feel fortunate for the situation we are in not bitching and spreading fake news.

As one of the first people in Yukon who was wearing a mask in public and at work, I am completely let down and have lost faith by the moving goalposts.

This government is consistently behind the times, which wouldn't be so bad outside of a pandemic, but now we are all harmed by their inability to be proactive and foresee changing circumstances.

We need leaders, but all we have is followers. I do not blame anyone for no longer caring what this government says - I don't anymore. Public trust is gone. I wish the people in charge had foresight, but they simply don't.

This government lied to us about the path forward out of the pandemic. They have treated the people who followed all the rules and looked out for their fellow citizens like fools.

I will continue to look out for my fellow citizens, but this government does not respect me, and I do not respect or believe in it.

Umm Mr. Math Teacher, NWT has vaccinated more people per capita than the Yukon. As well they had had more COVID cases than the Yukon.

The problem with the CEMA is your government does what they want, without having to answer to anyone. The implementation of policies not COVID related is unethical. Government is supposed to have checks and balances and you currently have none. The lack of transparency and accountability is atrocious. I thought the Yukon Party was bad, but you managed to make them look good and they have not really done anything.
Your continued mismanagement of people’s lives has become entertaining, which is sad, because people not being able to be with their loved ones should not be funny. However, it is the only thing one can do when they become encased in such a depressive state. You have not created mental health initiatives or help lines so people can call and decrease some of the stress YOU HAVE CREATED, no support for mental health in this dictator state... wait, there is a discount in alcohol, that shall help decrease depression, right? Maybe you could provide free anti-depressants, wait people have to go to the dealers to get those.

That will mean this nonsense will persist until the fall at minimum - perhaps longer. In short - don't hold your breath for any respite.

To put it simply - Hi Ho Silver, and his side kick Hanley, don't want to be open and honest with Yukoners. If they did - well I suspect "the masses" would take to the streets. So to avoid this outcome, they just keep incrementally extending the state of emergency.

But, people who want to wear a mask are freaked out so bad if you don't, that they pushed, and pushed hard, for legislation forcing you to. And, force is what our martial law is all about. The emergency act stopped being about emergency and started being about martial law the instant they used police to enforce punitive action. That it has been extended is no surprise. There have been several predictions about it. Eventually, someone is going to go off the deep end. And will Silver or Hanley take the blame? They certainly won't. One death that appears to have been borne from hospital negligence in spite of knowledge (even then) that underlying issues can have deathly effects. I blame the hospital, not covid, for that one. Why the hell are we still in a state of emergency when there is clearly no emergency here? Why not open it all up until said variants rear their ugly heads, at least once?

I am now completely convinced that this Liberal Government's actions are based on holding onto what power they currently have and are NOT based on science, the rights of Yukoners, or anything else reasonable. It's a power grab and nothing but.

If there was even a tiny shred of thought of voting Liberal (which there wasn't), this extension of the state of emergency without justification would have put me over the top.

Let's call an election already! Get rid of these power-trippers!

Where is the finish line MR Silver? Why did minister Pillai talk more bout election promotes than Yukoners and our future health.
Canada knew in advance about the virus but did nothing. Then they tried to buy the vaccine where the virus came from.
Than when that did not work they went running all over the place trying to get the vaccine. After that the role out of the vaccine was a hodge podge of problems.

Thanks to Nova Scotia giving vaccine to help Yukoners.

" With a territorial election looming, the Yukon government has extended the territory’s state of emergency for another 90 days." Then what? Another 90 days? And another?
Mr. Silver has repeatedly commented on what he wants: "Silver said he isn’t interested in making the community numbers public." Well Mr. Silver this isn't about you. It's about Yukoners who are concerned about this ever-changing pandemic and the solutions to keep people healthy and safe and do not have the level of faith that you might because you have the information others are asking for. Information YOU are not providing. Such arrogance for a fellow trying to get re-elected. I doubt that will be a winning strategy.

Nonsense. There is no emergency. So-called 'cases' have been declining worlwide since early January, before mass vaccination had begun. Clearly the virus has run its course, and/or natural herd immunity has been reached.

This is a bogus political decision based on bogus data. The WHO is practically owned by vaccine salesmen.
The Liberals don't care that they're destroying businesses, they just want to herd us into Trudeau's "Great Reset", as per the overlords' dictates.

This plandemic will continue indefinitely until people say they've had enough and stop complying with these ridiculous restrictions that have no science or common sense basis. It begins with polite civil disobedience. Start by wearing your mask pulled down to only cover your chin. We must start resisting or this will never end. The LIBgov does not want this to end, they've never enjoyed so much power, and now they're drunk with the possibility of it never ending.
If you are on Facebook, then join Yukoner’s Against COVID-19 Lockdowns and help us put an end to this. Enough is Enough.

Holy Jeeves this government just can't give up the power it so wants to hold onto. OK so state of emergency. So at the very least, start loosening restrictions LIKE YOU SAID YOU WOULD AFTER A VACCINE. Let people wear masks when they want. Open the bubble. Let people from Inuvik shop and those who need medical care or to see a loved one come home without being on lockdown and getting tickets. We are going to be ok.
