Injured Yukoner undergoes an eight-hour operation

Eight-hour surgery in Boston on Wednesday has been deemed a success for injured Yukoner Darryl Tait, though he will not walk again.
On Oct. 11, Tait's back was broken and there were injuries to his lungs in a snowmachine crash in New Hampshire, where he was attempting to do a flip at a show.
He was medevaced to Massachusetts General Hospital, where doctors had to wait until he could breathe on his own to perform Wednesday's surgery on his back.
While Tait is not expected to walk again, his family is pleased the surgery went well, with no complications.
"He's still in good spirits,” Dianne Tait, who's married to Darryl's uncle, Russ, said Thursday, citing up-to-date information that's available on the Internet.
A couple of Facebook groups dedicated to supporting the Tait family and updating friends on Tait's condition have sprung up along with an entire website: www.pullthroughdarryl.com.
Included on the website that was put together by Tait's friend, Chris Morton, is an e-mail sent by Tait's parents after the surgery.
The letter begins by thanking God for the successful surgery and everyone for their thoughts and prayers before going into detail on Tait's condition.
"He has 12 screws and a rod down his back from vertebrae T3 to T10 with the incision about a foot long,” it reads. "They had to graft some bone into the area from his hip, so there will be a small incision there as well.
"The main thing has been accomplished which is stabilizing his back. It was determined that his spinal cord was completely severed. We give thanks to God that at the time of Darryl's accident, it looks like the cord was pinched and then severed. This means no spinal fluid was lost, which is in Darryl's best interest.
"He is presently running a high temp again tonight. Please keep bathing our boy with your prayers for the continued healing of his body.”
The family is hopeful they will be back in Canada once again on Monday, though, as Dianne Tait said this morning, along with information on the website, that will depend on whether a bed is available in Vancouver, as well as his condition.
The letter on the website states a medevac plane is tentatively scheduled to fly Tait home to Canada on Monday.
Tait's determination and spirit have shone through since the crash.
As the letter states: "We are so very proud of him!!!!! He mouthed to us asking when he can get outside or get out of here!!!!???!!!
"We told him not for several days, and you could tell he was frustrated !!! It does reveal to us his determination that he wants to keep pressing through onto the next step.
"He and all of us are happy to have him off the restraining, rocking bed and propped up 30 degrees on a normal hospital bed. He is still pretty drugged up and will be overnight.”
Remaining confident that Tait will indeed pull through, the family stated:
"We have much to be grateful for that in God's plan, Darryl is still here with us sharing life and in time he will be living it to the fullest once again!
"There is a hard journey ahead but the rewards are going to be great! Because if God is with us, who can be against us! God has a plan for Darryl to prosper him and not cause harm him, to give him hope and a future!
"Darryl has so much yet to give with the strength that God will give him in mind, body and spirit! We haven't seen nothing yet!”
Updates will continue to be made on the website as they come in, Morton told readers.
Asked what the family needs right now, Dianne noted the thoughts and prayers coming in continue to be appreciated.
Friends are also collecting donations for the family with a link through the Pull Through Darryl group on Facebook or on the www.pullthroughdarryl.com website.
Information on the extent of the injured youth's health insurance during his time in the U.S. was not immediately available.
