The Yukon Coroner Service and the RCMP's "M” Division Major Crimes Section are investigating the sudden death of an 11-month-old infant over the weekend in Whitehorse.

Coroner Sharon Hanley said today until she receives the results of the autopsy scheduled for later this week, she can't comment on the possible cause of death because she just doesn't know.

Whitehorse Emergency Medical Services responded at 1 p.m. Saturday to a report of an unresponsive infant, says an RCMP press release issued this morning.

The child was rushed to Whitehorse General Hospital, but was not able to be resuscitated.

"In all cases where there is an unexplained death of an otherwise healthy person or in this case, an infant, an investigation is conducted to determine the cause and manner of the death," Sgt. Don Rogers said in the press release

The investigation is continuing. The family's name is not being released.

The Yukon medical health officer, Brendan Hanley said today that while he's heard about the infant's death, he has no information to substantiate that it is related to the H1N1 flu.

He noted that an investigation is underway, as it would be with any similiar case.
