Immigration can lead to housing shortages: feds

By Palak Mangat on August 21, 2018
The Yukon is well-positioned to not only welcome but retain newcomers to the territory for the long run, a federal minister believes.
With a retention rate of about 80 per cent, the region is doing a good job of drawing and keeping immigrants in the territory. That’s according to Ahmed Hussen, the federal minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, who visited Whitehorse last week.
“I think retention is really important; it’s not enough to attract skilled immigrants to certain parts of Canada but also retain them,” he said.
“But I must admit,” he added to his Yukon audience, “you’re doing very well here.”
That’s in comparison to areas of Atlantic Canada, where retention rates sit at about 60 per cent: “it’s actually almost the opposite” focus, Hussen said.
Yukon MP Larry Bagnell also spoke at a meeting held last Wednesday discussing immigration and featuring himself, Hussen and Economic Development Minister Ranj Pillai. Bagnell noted that his office has dealt with newcomers from more than 50 countries this year.
With more and more people coming to the Yukon and choosing to stay in the territory, though, can come the increased need for housing – something the federal government is well aware of, said Bagnell.
“It’s a problem right across Canada. We certainly heard in the roundtables today for both the government and private sector that housing is a big issue when you’re employing people,” Bagnell added.
“There’s a lot more coming – stay tuned,” he smiled.
Pillai represented the Yukon at a federal, territorial and provincial forum of ministers responsible for immigration in Winnipeg in July. He acknowledged that this was not an unheard of concern for his government either.
“Those pressures were there” when the Yukon Liberals took office in December 2016, he said.
It’s also partly why the territory hosted Hussen, Pillai continued.
“There’s a real collaborative effort on how we get lots out, what are some new extraordinary ways that we can work with the private sector to fill that housing gap.”
According to the federal Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, the country hopes to attract just over 300,000 permanent residents as part of its 2018 multi-year immigration levels (as of November 2017).
By 2020, that number is expected to jump closer to 340,000 – with most of the permanent residents coming through the economic immigration category.
That seems to be in line with Pillai’s statements in July about economic immigration continuing to be a priority in the coming years for the territory.

Hey MO...”always been a word man, better than a bird man...” James D Morrison.
Since I first spoke, I asked uncomfortable questions relentlessly.
...and will until I can no longer.
Glad I made your day, gotta say I do not hear that much.
MO I truly do what I do to force folks to think outside of a narrative in the hopes of undermining some of the epic stupidity others seem to think is the new normal...it is not.
There is far too much collective and state sanctioned silliness and it will not cease if we can not discuss the levels of lunacy and said architects of it.
Thanks for your feedback supportive yes, but welcome even if not...I have purdy thick skin MO

You seem to have the answer to everything, however even after a long career in the public sector you still whine about being destitute and having to work into your 70s. Sounds like poor decisions and poor planning are a theme.
Have you ever thought that it's not the system working against you but you working against the system? We should all be happy you aren't a decider in our lives.

Gee Susan...nice try, my defence...
I really cannot believe the sheer volume of naive folks we have reprogrammed via CBC and public school.
Some of those uniformed fools and their levels of cognitive dissonance are no reflection on free thinking Canuks, and are close to the line..if not past?
Clinical collective retardation.
Funny how dissent to your seemingly support of Trojan camels, trips right to hate.
The one thing I do actually hate, are willfully ignorant virtue warriors.
Where you fit into that equation has already been clearly demonstrated.
Next time you see Larry at the buffet component of a photo op, tell him of all the vile hate out there.
We used to call it a disagreement before progressive morons, picked up the scythe and started chanting.
To sit and chat with me on current events Susan, would most certainly trigger you to full auto till the barrel glows white.

Trudeau has very few, if any people in his Cabinet that were appointed because of their ability to do the job. Some were appointed because they were female..some because they aren't..some because they are in a wheelchair, some because of the color of their skin.. some because of their head apparel..
No idea why this gentleman was appointed.. perhaps he had a "Pay for Access" meeting with Trudeau? In any case.. we have Climate Barbie McKenna tweeting..I'm the Minister of Weather..we have Sajjan lying and taking credit for others accomplishments.. we have Monsef trying to make it a prisonable offence to question Islam, pushing for 'self' government in which Muslim's can live with Sharia law in Canada when most non-violent Muslims do not want Sharia law in Canada (405,000 hits on this). Trudeau is a socialist who believes in no borders, equal financial status for everyone.. (that means, everyone will have say.. 1,000. work? you get 1,000.. don't work..you get 1,000).
Everyone can come here..walk across the border.. This Hussain dude is just following the leader..but doesn't have the knowledge or background to administer the position properly. The question is..as it always is.. who is going to pay for all this nonsense? Is Trudeau going to empty his trust fund and bribe money and contribute to the coffers? Hmmm.. don't think so.. this is a pretty hefty bill..the support of hundreds of thousands of people... AND..the kicker? There are probably enough people taking money..and not contributing anything to the country for us all to have 1 deduction at tax time. But..no..we have to pay for it, but can't even deduct it.
To: I don't agree.. bravo!!

Fellow comrades, er I mean citizens. Susan is correct, you are not thinking or speaking in a government approved manner and this behaviour is to stop immediately or else the state may have to get involved. Care to do a little time in Siberia or have to go through a re-education process comrades?
Sorry, for a minute there I was having a nightmare where I was living under communism in the 1960's. Please tell me this is Canada and we don't have government 'minders' or have to speak in whispers while looking over our shoulders for fear of state retribution. Truly there is nothing more dangerous to the left wing than people who are able to think and speak up for themselves or have the ability to disagree with the socialist agenda for the new world order.

Housing is the tip of the immigrant problem. There will also be greater demands on our healthcare system at all levels as well as the education system when all these immigrant children attend schools that are already over-crowded. The problem with embracing the Globalist ideal is that local taxpayers must foot the bills.

Hey 1492...might I be a captain obvious for a moment?
That is a heap of cultural misappropriation you listed off in such a cunning way.
Given the hyper sensitive enclaves of various identity groups in these insane times, one could really call the use of all machinery inappropriate and culturally offensive if not a European Invader.
That however even I think is a biiiig reach, as most claims are from many various enclaves are in this ridiculous game of identity group politics.
Your points however are spot on as it relates to the first migrants, please...
Carry on.
Besides, I like my snowshoes and no point in any cultural bogarting cool ideas...we can share...we all have the same opportunities these days.
What one does with those opportunities will determine ones outcome.
Any culture that has their outcome assured, does it at the expense of another’s opportunity....it really is that simple.

My In laws immigrated (legally) from Germany in the 1950's. They helped build a lot of the buildings around Whitehorse and other parts of our great country we call Canada. They never collected Unemployment or Welfare. Never bled the system or had to live off the system. They did not want anything else but to live in a country and raise their children in a country that was safe. This is the type of immigrants we need. RIP Mom and Dad.

@ Uptight, thank goodness for Christopher Columbus and the year 1492 eh? Without his courageous actions 520 years ago the natives of today wouldn't be driving those nice Chevy pickups and flying back and forth to Vancouver for the weekends. Oh also rifles, snowmobiles, ATV's, electricity, central heating, homes that have actual floors instead of dirt or leaves and modern medicine just to name a few results that started with good 'ole Chris Columbus. So you just go ahead and wisecrack but maybe give some thought to the comfy, spoiled lifestyle everyone on this continent now lives today compared to pre 1492 thanks to the brave men on the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria.

Hey PSG...I remember well a conversation I had with Dan Lang on exactly that human trafficking portfolio called TFW.
I explained to him clearly why his team lost me, as I watched my community completely engineered & transformed into a UN base camp.
So yes I directed my “outrage” if you will at team blues local rep.
IMO team red is very treasonous with their approach to demographic dilution and by policy completely outta touch with most of reality.

I have worked since 1967 in this country, paid taxes, never cost my fellow Canadians a cent. I resent my Prime Minister giving away Millions of Dollars of my hard earned money to countries who support terrorists and their women have no rights. No more illegal immigrants should be allowed to skip the legal process and be supported by my tax dollars, living in hotels, having health care, being given monthly money to live on and not work when so many Canadians are living on the streets, living in substandard housing and have not the basics of decent Canadian living.

Not at all a fan of Hussen.
Definitely some major issues with immigration, legal and illegal and with our refugee system but.... one has to ask where was all the outrage and concern when the non-temporary TFW thing was being run at full throttle with zero checks and balances by the last government(s). Especially when so much of our tax dollars were being used to fund it including topping off TFW wages well above the minimum wage that regular Canadians were stuck with? Just saying.

Most Canadians have no problem with people who come here with skills and education, through the legal immigration process just like most Canadian immigrants did. They will be welcomed if they come here to be Canadians; to respect and honor our cultural values, customs, and laws; to assimilate and integrate into our communities and culture; to become law-abiding productive members of Canadian society.
We DO have a problem with those who come here to take advantage of our generous social benefits; to isolate themselves in enclaves; to set themselves apart by their actions; to disrespect our laws and values; to practice barbaric, aggressive, and oppressive customs, and try to change Canada to be like the shítholes they escaped from.
Those who disrespect our laws should be detained, then placed on military transports under armed guard, flown to a military base near their country of origin, and escorted out the front gate and told to never come back.

Mr Bagnall talks about working for Yukon and has funded a lot infrastructure since his government took power. Way more than the last government did. It's not about last government. Who cares what the last government did? It is what you are doing for us now. I'll be very blunt voters. I worked on infrastructure for many years and programs and I supported Larry and he is simply putting out the facts as they really are. Our MP federal government has given $2.4 million for housing a year while the last federal government with the Yukon Government invested over $100 million into housing. That the facts. Our MP stated they are creating more jobs through infrastructure investment into water and sewer than over the last ten years. But evidence shows that is not true. These are temp jobs and water and sewer only has 22% labor content while housing is over 40% and much more long term.
Folks I feel for Larry but he going way overboard with his facts and is desperate to win and will tell Yukoners a yarn and if they believe it think again.
MP step down and don't run again because you are not representing Yukoners but just your own to have a pay check.

I don't agree with having a Somali-Canadian who has only lived in Canada since the 1990's be the Liberal governments minister in charge of immigration. The term fox guarding the henhouse comes to mind.
I don't agree with having 300,000 plus new immigrants a year coming to Canada and Yukon when our Canadian health care system is already overwhelmed and people who live here have trouble getting doctors and treatment.
I don't agree with how immigration across Canada but especially in larger cities as well as Whitehorse is contributing to housing crunches which means people who are born here are finding themselves being priced out of the housing market. Who wants to live with 12 adults sharing a house in order to afford it?
I don't agree with how two Canadian parents living here both have to work full time to be able to raise a couple kids, but immigrants and refugees can come in with large families and be the recipients of initial taxpayer funding for living costs and repayable government grants and loans to start businesses.
I don't agree that I as a Canadian have to cross the border legally or be arrested and charged, but someone with no connection to Canada can walk across the border illegally in the middle of nowhere and suddenly my government and my taxes are on the hook to provide them accommodations, food and medical care.
And lastly I don't care if I step on some peoples toes by stating the above. I'm not blind and I see what is happening in this country and this Canadian does not like it.
