DISPLEASURE EXPRESSED – Trevor Hunziker, left, and Richard Hunziker are not happy they’ve been told by the city they have to leave their Ear Lake gravel pit by Friday. They say they do not have any intention of moving out.

Richard and Trevor Hunziker of Annie Lake Trucking say it doesn’t make sense that the city is evicting them from the Ear Lake gravel pit.

By Chuck Tobin on June 30, 2022

Richard and Trevor Hunziker of Annie Lake Trucking say it doesn’t make sense that the city is evicting them from the Ear Lake gravel pit.

Annie Lake Trucking has been there for decades – and there is still plenty of readily-accessible gravel, they maintained in a recent interview with the Star at the pit site.

They said there are still more than 300,000 cubic metres of gravel in their pit.

Of that, 180,000 cubic metres could be moved if the city were to give them just two more years, they explained.

The city told them four months ago they had to be out by tomorrow, they said, noting they were also told in 2020 the city wanted them out.

With two more years, they can quarry the 180 cubic metres. Then the city could turn into a park as outlined in its Official Community Plan, they said.

The brothers explained there is no pressure on Skookum Asphalt nor Castlerock to vacate their pits because they own the property, but Annie Lake was never given the opportunity to buy its property.

That Annie Lake Trucking was never provided the opportunity to buy the land in their pit was absolutely unfair, they maintain.

The city threatened to sue Annie Lake last winter, so the company had to go to court and was more or less forced to sign an agreement they would vacate the pit by July.

However, it has no intention of doing so, they said.

“I will be standing at the gate,” said Richard. “I don’t care if I
 get arrested.”

Richard and Trevor said the push to evict them comes as the city is facing a gravel shortage.

The Hunzikers noted they wanted to appear before city council three or four months ago to appeal the eviction.

They were told they could not appear before council because the matter was before the courts.

In a similar vein, the city does not make media comments on matters before the courts.

Moving their operations to the McLean Lake quarry would cost Annie Lake Trucking approximately $1 million, the Hunzikers maintain.

The said having to relocate their operation would mean moving their 40-foot by 80-foot shop, as well as all their equipment and fleet of dump trucks.

The Hunzikers say the quality of gravel in their Ear Lake pit is far superior to the gravel in the McLean Lake quarry.

Annie Lake is the only quarrying company that produces concrete-grade gravel but does not have a concrete plant, they explained.

The city’s gravel shortage has the Yukon government examining the Stevens quarry, off the Alaska Highway north of the Mayo Cutoff, as a possible source.

However, shortly before the April 2021 election, Tracey Jacobs, the Liberal candidate for Lake Laberge, knocked on doors with the cabinet’s written assurance that Stevens would not be developed during the term of a re-elected Liberal government.

A decade ago, the potential development of that site prompted a protest petition from nearby residents anxious about noise, dust and increased heavy truck traffic the deposit’s development would create.

Really the city of Whitehorse is running out of gravel ? ROTFLMAO
The city is sitting on a beautiful park / residential area it only allows float planes to use… what city do you know that would squander such a beautiful place right in the middle of its city limits, but wants to build a park in an industrial area…REALLY ?

Dougie! One of my favorite people, 'Gold Nuggie Dougie".. he's from the old days that you, for some reason, think I wasn't here for. Dougie, and Josh and Moon Cons. No one will know who they are now, but back in the day.. Jeff Lattin married us (not me and Dougie..me and someone else..the lucky guy) in the old Federal building, in the Post Office lobby. Roy McDiramid and Henry Hanulik were our witnesses. oh! and Tom Taylor was there.
The place to eat was at Herbies, Chinese food at the old Yukon Inn, right in the middle of the parking lot. The place to drink during the day was the Capitol, but run across the mud streets and climb the boardwalk to listen to the Gold Nuggets, in the Whitehorse Inn, Gold Nugget Lounge. (I got old with you dudes! Ed and Red..was Ray there then?) You wouldn't be that Dougie.. that Dougie would say his piece about the topic, would never stoop to calling someone a liar, especially when he would have no idea what their story was. I take some exception to being called a liar. I can't think why you would target me for posting an opinion? and yeah..I WAS there. I actually expected to see more of the 'old days' seniors posting about this. The Yukon is losing them left and right, the old stories will never get told. (Remind me sometime to tell about Axel, Mike, Johnny, Henry, Hank, Eric, and Ruby's place). It would be manly of you to post an apology for calling me a liar.

@for those, obviously i've been here much longer than you. The garbage and needles came in when that little lake was drained for the profit of the business elite.

Now your dreaming dog park and security cameras.

The amount of thumbs up clearly indicates that people remember what i describe. But yeah your right, don't go down memory lane, cause in those days the Yukon was much smaller and had less people.

There is an undertow into Schwatka in that lake, the bottom is covered in beer bottles and needles and all kinds of treasure - yeah, I will be falling over myself to protest these guys outta there. Buddies cabin was still a charred insurance project last time I was up there, has that been cleaned up? Meanwhile, down the hill, no go kart track, no campground, no nothing.

I am confused what the recreationalists want, because it is sure as hell not recreation by any stretch of the imagination and one does not even need an imagination to reach the top in this town.

This whole thing stinks of Liberal politics. The Hunzikers have been there as long as I can remember. i came here in 1965 and I damn well remember going to that crappy little water hole and getting leeches on my legs. At some point it became the party place and dumping ground. Today it would be needles and drugs. I don't know what the end plan is, because the City 'ain't' talkin'.

But come winter and the people are screaming for gravel, (after screaming for snow removal), who's going to own that pit? The City going to suddenly change their minds about remediation, because its going to cost millions and millions of dollars, or sell it to FN? Everything Liberals touch seem to have a bad odor.. Yeah..I know there's a couple of Cons in there. Just let the family do their business, and I might add, they hire people that live here, they don't import anyone, and the City stick their claws somewhere else. Jeez.. what happens to people after they get elected? They turn into a cluster **** that thinks its ok for a small community to be $16 million in debt, tax everyone out the wazoo, close down family businesses, but, hey..they got themselves a raise! Apparently, I am as bad at choosing people to vote for as I am at dieting.

At Woodcutter on Jul 4, 2022 at 10:58 am:

BS - The spot was polluted and ruined with broken glass from beer and hard liquor bottles, discarded metal and other garbage. Parties - Drugs and alcohol. The glass though, everywhere, still is. The lake and surroundings have been subject to remediation efforts in the past. I can remember articles about broken glass, cut feet, and suggestions that the place was unfit to swim a dog.

Take your little nostalgic trip elsewhere… People treated the lake as nothing more than a urinal/dogs hit/garbage dump. A precious spot all right…
Previous remediation efforts have missed the mark and much like identity politics… It only addressed to surface level stuff.

But it could be a wonderful in town destination for summer and winter if cleaned and taken care of properly. For example, maintained grassy areas, a float dock, and maybe a water slide for summer. Trails for walking/hiking etc.
In the winter there could be ice skating, sleigh rides, cross country skiing, lit trails, and coloured lights…

Maybe even a dog park area for swimming and playing etc.
Bring the water levels back up and stock it with fish: rainbow trout or whatever.
Install cameras and ticket people for littering etc.

@fringe..

I recall a nice little lake that folks could go to . On one end was the nudist beach and the rest was families . It was beautiful in the summer and perfect location as folks could bike there. There was a little gravel operation and the asphalt plant was not even a thought.

Then the big business got their paid for politicians elected and in the name of jobs and profits, the site was turned over, by the same paid for politicians, to their masters. This is when Skookum asphalt built their log castle and these predecessors of the woke brothers came to be on this site.

Once again the everyday citizen is screwed over, but don't lament, in time they will go beside your neighborhood and exploit the resource they perceive as their own and you can feel the suffering for 30 years that the sweet little Ear lake has to endure.

It's a great place for a small park just as it was in the past, for those of us that remember.

Not that it's here or there but Annie Lake Trucking was started by Joe Chinourd and sold top soil from Annie Lake is my belief.
@Fringe minority: This area was originally a major recreational area for Whitehorse residents before it got industrialized. Get the gravels out and restore Ear Lake to it's original recreational purpose. Somehow Rollie Myles dad had a cabin on there at one time. I'm not sure if that's still there or not and not to be confused with Ted Myles.

The city had put forward an option to haul in sand and restore a beach at Ear Lake. I would be very surprised if this actually happens.

The area around Ear Lake is currently used by dirt bikers who frequently use the Miles Canyon Road without plates and presumably without insurance, There seems to be no bylaw enforcement at all for the road or the trails around Ear Lake.

If the city plans to turn the Ear Lake area into a dirt bike area I would suggest that the lease for Annie Lake trucking be extended for at least two years. It's really hard to have any confidence in the city's agenda for this area. The potential restoration of the Ear Lake area will likely been put off for a very long time for the cost of doing the work.

Perhaps since these boys are protesting against a perceived injustice, they could call themselves "woke brothers sand and gravel".

This perceived shortage of gravel is nonsense. I've been hearing a shortage for decades and when I order 10 loads of pit run, there it is next day.

This protest is a piece of performance art designed to create sympathy at some vague injustice of no longer being able to use a public resource that woke bothers feel is their exclusive right.

Let's review: The two governments appear to want to stop and evict a long-term business with a consumer critical demand that all the economic forecasters say will only increase in the near to mid term; and while they are doing this they will reneg on a political promise and end up pissing off many residents in the local area by developing the Stevens quarry site. I wonder if they even know what a Pro/Con analysis looks like?
Is there any upside to their plans?

Up 50 Down 7

marylaker on Jul 1, 2022 at 2:05 pm

What is the city's plan for the area after they evict this multi-generational family owned business? The article says the OCP has it marked as park land. Is that going to happen soon? The development out at the railroad tracks south of McRae has destroyed the kid's toboggan hill. Maybe this would be a good site for a new one. Plus a swimming hole in the summer.

I have no problem with them being told to pack up and leave if their lease has expired and they were given proper notice. It's not their land. I do feel for them that they are having their home and livelihood pulled out from under them, but I also think they knew very well what the deal was and should have been transitioning to the new location they have been offered.

The city is under no obligation to offer it to them for sale, either. However, I am curious about why Skookum and Castlerock were given the opportunity to privately title their properties.

This article is seriously lacking in details, specifically about the other side of the story.

Let's get this cleared up. You were aware on 2020 that you needed to move? You had a court battle and lost? You built a huge shop on land you did not own? There is an alternative spot but its not to your liking? So now your feeling so entitled that your ready to chain yourself to the front gate instead of standing behind your signature, obeying a court order, making the moves to relocate and to portray your self as a victim?

Perhaps 90 days in WCC and a nice fat legal bill is what will provide a much needed tune up for these two.
