‘I loved it,’ dismissed manager says of job

Betty Irwin, the manager of the Mae Bachur Animal Shelter, has been fired.

By Rhiannon Russell on August 14, 2015

Betty Irwin, the manager of the Mae Bachur Animal Shelter, has been fired.

She was dismissed Thursday morning by Brent Slobodin, the board president of the Humane Society Yukon.

Slobodin told the Star today that the board “unanimously decided that it was time to go in a different direction.”

He wouldn’t elaborate, saying it’s a personnel matter.

“We just felt that it was time to part ways,” Slobodin said.

“She had done a good job for us, but we felt that moving forward, it was time to look for a fresh perspective.”

The society’s board is relatively new, he noted – he’s been president since April – and the members are looking to put a new model in place.

The board must give Irwin severance pay as per her contract, but Slobodin declined to say what the amount is. He said it would affect the society’s operating costs.

Reached by phone Thursday afternoon, Irwin said she was upset.

She spent the afternoon taking her dogs for a long walk and thinking things over, she said.

“I’d rather been expecting it,” Irwin said.

“But when it happens, yes, it is a shock. I knew that there was a major reorganization going on and I was not really privy to that.”

She declined to say the reasons given for her firing, if any.

Irwin, who is also a city councillor, had been the Tlingit Street shelter’s manager since July 2014.

Two months ago, she received a positive performance evaluation from former president Cris Guppy, she said.

“I loved it,” Irwin said of the job.

“It was always a great feeling when an animal was adopted to a place that you knew was going to be a good home. It gave you a warm, fuzzy feeling.”

As manager of the 17-year-old shelter, Irwin was responsible for its day-to-day operations.

She said one of the responsibilities is to “serve at the discretion of the board,” with the manager passing along information or new procedures to shelter staff.

“That was the way it was supposed to work,” she said.

It wouldn’t always happen that way, she said. She declined to comment further, citing a confidentiality clause in her contract.

Irwin first started volunteering with the shelter’s weekly bingo fundraiser years ago. She said she’ll continue to do that.

“The shelter is so important to the community, and I certainly want to see it be successful,” she said.

“It’s a non-profit organization, and, like all non-profits, it struggles, certainly with governance and with finances.”

Slobodin said the board will revise the shelter manager job description and seek to hire someone in the fall.

In the interim, former board member Linda Priestley will fill the position, he said.

In May, Priestley resigned from the board to take on the role of project manager at the shelter, according to that month’s meeting minutes.

When Irwin became shelter manager last year, her son Hoby Irwin, then-president of the board, stepped down to avoid a conflict of interest.

There has been frequent turnover of the humane society’s board in the last few years.

There was also a highly publicized court dispute over issues that, according to one former president, nearly caused the organization to dissolve.

In October 2012, then-president Shelley Cuthbert and board members Maryanne Baer, Isabelle Cote and Gerald Thompson were charged under the Societies Act with failing to comply with instructions from the registrar of societies.

They’d been ordered to issue memberships the board had denied and to hold an annual general meeting.

The three other members pleaded guilty to violating the registrar’s order, and were sentenced to two years’ probation.

Cuthbert pleaded not guilty and stood trial in September 2013.

She was convicted two months later, and sentenced to two years’ probation.

It was a financially trying time for the society.

In late 2012, the shelter stopped accepting new animals and laid off nine employees.

Territorial funding was withheld while the registrar took court action against the board.

As of June 2013, the humane society had roughly $50,000 in unpaid bills, Hoby Irwin said at the time.

It was able to repay those funds when it received $61,000 in damages as a result of a lawsuit filed by the registrar.

Today, Slobodin said fundraising is an ongoing challenge for the shelter.

The board and staff raise about 75 per cent of their money, because they receive little government funding.

At its annual yard sale last month, the shelter raised $6,000.

“We all care about the animals, of course, so we’re doing everything we can to maintain the service we provide, but it is difficult,” Slobodin said.

He said the public is generous with its donations. The society will also be looking for more corporate sponsorships.

Politico, the City Manager answers to Council. If your insults were targetted at me, I have no connection at all to the Humane Society. I have no idea what you mean by "harpercrite damage control....." so can't respond, but I assure you that what I posted was just my opinion and frankly there's nothing about this issue that would warrant anybody resorting to what you call "lies and half truths". Settle down.

"Yukoner" Please get your facts straight. The crowd of youngsters showed up unannounced and there was no one at the shelter who could escort them. This was due to the staff cutbacks due to the lack of fund raising by the board. You'd be screaming if one of them had been hurt after being allowed unescorted through the shelter.
"jwhite" The City employees were fired by the City Manager not the City Council. I do believe the council was very upset by this but according to the rules she is allowed to do this.
You 2 must be friends of the board. Harpercrite damage control, when in doubt lie or at least confuse the situation with half truths.

There's absolutely nothing in the article to even suggest that her firing was as a result of "ageism".

Why is this a big deal? Organizations fire people all the time. In fact, it wasn't all that long ago that she was part of the City of Whitehorse firing two senior managers, without cause. So now she's on the other end of the stick.

I wonder if Betty was let go because she decided to make rules that excluded people from volunteering. It was she who turned away a youth group to provide close to 20 volunteers at the shelter.... said they weren't wanted.

Obviously she was let go due to Ageism. If she was doing a good job why let her go? Pretty pathetic, "board". They should all be ashamed of themselves.
If I was her I would take it to the Human Rights Board. You are suppose to respect Elders not fire them.

Well meaning Board on Aug 19, 2015 at 12:34 pm

The current board is filled with well meaning people that want to see the Shelter not only operational, but successful. This is not an easy job, especially considering the organization's history. There are so many people criticizing the decisions being made. How many of those people will actually volunteer to spend their valuable time sitting on a board? It's not a job that receives much praise; those willing to sit on a board (and this board in particular) deserve support, not criticism. If you have any valuable suggestions on how the shelter can be better run, how about you sit down with a member of the board and share them. Instead everyone is so quick to judge and point blame. Many of the problems the Humane Society is dealing with are actually from before the current board was even appointed. These issues are not going to be resolved quickly. So how about supporting those attempting to make a difference, or better yet, join them and make a difference yourself.

@Brent Slobodin
I looked online and seen that 2 AGMs had to be held, which meant quorum was not met at the first one. I'm guessing no emails were sent to the membership nor was it advertised in the paper. It was not advertised on Facebook and the useless advertising you claim to have done on your website obviously didn't get to the members of the HSY.
As for funding and fundraising. 2 fundraisers in the course of 8 mos to a year is not means to support the HSY. I see Konas doing fundraisers almost every month and I'm sure their operating budget isn't as high as the shelters. It is up the BOD to raise the money and allow the Manager to run the day to day. Its interesting to see that a board member step down, to step into the runnings of the shelter. There are a lot of fishy things going on and its looking like the past is repeating itself. Only I think this time the HSY won't recover.

This place has been a gong show for years. Trevor the Dog... finances in a mess..... I could go on.... I don't know what the answers are, but a few well meaning people do not mean results!

Some people are pretty free at making suggestions about what someone else should do with their money. It's easy to tell people to "donate" their paycheque or severance, I guess. But consider the severance a fine on the board of directors to keep them from making hasty personnel decisions. I don't suppose competent executive directors are a dime a dozen, especially for such a challenging organization.

For those of you who got up here five minutes ago, even before she was councillor, Betty was instrumental in many community projects and organizations. She has nothing to apologize for, and sticking your oar in to tell her what to do with her money is just offensive. As for her political service, she's had a lot to do with changing the culture at Whitehorse City Council, in a positive way.

We adopted two cats from the shelter in 2008 and 2009!
It was nice there, a good environment and helpful staff!

What is it now? All about money, money, money! Of course they need it to take care of the animals but what kind of direction does the "board" have? Looks like - none!

How about more fundraising? 4 garage sales instead of one?
Hey guys - do you need some fresh ideas??? Can't be that hard...

Stop putting your energy in this kindergarten attitude and do something productive instead!!!
The animals will be thankful for this and at the end all the effort should be for them, right?

Wow, thought this was an organization & facility to assist animal's in need! Instead, it appears the organization's Board is about power & the need to control every aspect of it's operation. To terminate the Manager rather than guide & assist her toward the changing views of a new Board seems more about power & who is the boss (my way or the highway) rather than the good of the Animal Care Center! Be hard pressed to support a dysfunctional organization like this!

Problem is a board that constantly meddles in the running of the shelter rather than letting the manager do their job. The new manager has for years interfered in the operations of the shelter and has finally made herself manager. Years ago she attempted fire all the staff and replace them with volunteers. From the BOD notes it looks like she is still trying.

Surprising comments from Mr. Slobodin on Aug 17, 2015 at 3:55 pm

I am having a hard time to understand or believe that the comments posted here under Brent Slobodin are indeed from Brent Slobodin. However, if they are truly your comments Mr. Slobodin it is very sad for us and more importantly the animals. With your background and as president of the Board I would fully and without exception expect a professional handling of the concerns of those writing comments. Not to say that they care more for animals than you do but you are charged with the responsibility of keeping things calm under adversity. It is a failure to do otherwise. In this case the failure is heightened as those at risk and relying on cool and level headed leadership are totally vulnerable to human posturing and bravado....unacceptable.

@Brent Slobodin:
I'm really hoping somebody is posting using your name and that these comments are not actually from the President of the Humane Society. There is a difference between having a Facebook page and using the Facebook page. Individuals asked for ways to help donate and received no response for weeks. The recent raffle was poorly advertised both on the Facebook page and on the website. No mention of collecting receipts exists on the Facebook page or website which seems like an easy way to get a few donations. If this is how you treat a member of the society, maybe consider if you're doing more harm than good.

I think we really need a new board!
Betty may have made a few mistakes, she is only human after all. And she was very passionate, speaking up for the animals who can not speak for themselves and I have so much respect for that.

The board should have worked things out with Betty and set the right pathway for the next year with milestones and fundraising targets rather than pandering to the public with half baked statements.

@ Brent Slobodin - I'm pretty certain Concerned Member can read and was he/she meant was 2 fundraising events in nearly 8 months is really not that much. So your cheap shot in regards of "investigation" and "foot in the mouth" is truly not appropriate and sounds rather that you might have some issues of your own. I
Expect from the president of the HSY better manners.

Your remarks are ticking rather possible new members, donors and volunteers off and I can imagine the HSY wants the best of us, which is our time and MONEY, MONEY and more MONEY. Having worked in the Government for that long, the understanding of marketing is clearly not being exercised in such an environment.

You might have been elected during the AGM as well but your name appeared already in the May minutes. Your name wasn't stated as interim president, so I guess you were "elected" by the board ahead of the AGM.

Hopeful: I am hopeful that Betty Irwin will not keep the severance pay she is entitled to as per her contract. The shelter seems to be teetering on the brink of disaster again. Hopefully Betty can see her way clear to donating the severance pay back to the shelter. I'm sure the dogs and cats would appreciate it.

The Humane Society needs to get a strong board who are able to successfully direct the society in the coming years. The society has been hurt by the continued turnover of executive members, poor decisions by Irwin, and an absolute failure for publicizing their fundraisers. They need to utilize the free resources they have at their disposal such as Facebook to reach out to supporters from across the Yukon for volunteers and financial support. It's time for supporters to come together and help build a self-sustaining Humane Society for years to come.

We just had our AGM in July. Yes, I was elected and so were the board members. This is all available for reading on our website. It was advertised and you could have attended.
Too bad you felt the need to criticize board members and volunteers for their "crap job" of fund raising. We held a raffle in spring and announced the winners at a public event. Just a few weeks ago we had dozens of people help out with our annual two day garage sale, which had been advertised. The garage sale was very successful. Sometimes it helps to do a little investigation beforehand so you don't put your foot in your mouth.

This special interest group has been plagued with many many issues over the years.
The arrogance coming from past/present board members has set my mind..I no longer support them...at all.
Yes the claim to be the saviors of critters, sure they do some good deeds...but their importance in our community has been waaaaay overstated.
Easier getting a PAL than it seems to be getting a critter from them.
An emotional based special interest group is a hard one to critic without gobs-O-haters slamming one.

Was there an AGM for this "new president" and BOD? Seems like they are going down the same road as the previous board that almost sank the HSY. I haven't seen much of any fundraising lately and the staff have enough to deal with, fundraising shouldn't be their job. From what I understand that's the BODs job and they're doing a crap job.
Every time I volunteer I see unhappy staff sitting around talking and no cleaning being done or help with the public.
I hope this isn't the beginning of the end of the HSY. I really hope things turn around but it isn't looking that way.
