OUTBREAK DECLARED – Dr. Christine Elliott, the territory’s acting medical officer of health, discusses the developing COVID-19 situation at the news conference held this morning.

‘I am concerned about this outbreak’: MD

Despite Whitehorse being ground zero in a new COVID-19 outbreak over the weekend, there will be no immediate return to tight health restrictions.

By Tim Giilck on June 14, 2021

Despite Whitehorse being ground zero in a new COVID-19 outbreak over the weekend, there will be no immediate return to tight health restrictions.

Dr. Catherine Elliott, the territory’s acting medical officer of health, held a news conference this morning after declaring the outbreak over the weekend.

“An outbreak among people who are not yet vaccinated is concerning, and we are very likely to see more cases in the coming days,” she said.

“It is now more important than ever that people in Whitehorse follow the Safe 6 + 1, that people with symptoms isolate and get tested, and that we all get vaccinated against COVID-19.

“The Gamma (P.1) variant is highly transmissible in groups who are not yet vaccinated. The vaccine is protective.

“Our response goal is to keep people healthy and protect those at risk of severe disease. This requires us all to follow this guidance.”

More than a dozen new cases were discovered during that time period. Some are being traced to graduation activities for high school students, particularly at Porter Creek Secondary School.

That led to the cancellation of the school’s prom on Saturday. All members of the graduating class are now self-isolating.

There are now 21 active cases in the territory.

Despite that, there will be no immediate move to lower the boom with tighter health restrictions.

“We have a plan to increase measures but we’re not there yet,” she said.

Elliott suggested a return to more careful adherence to the Safe Six + One health measures would help the situation.

This morning, she attributed much of the outbreak to people not following the Safe Six properly, particularly physical distancing amongst the infected people.

She attributed some of that to COVID-19 fatigue and complacency.

“The rules are solid and they work,” she said. “Again and again, we’ve been surprised by COVID.”

Elliott added this is an example of why Yukoners can’t let their guard down with the virus still lurking.

The outbreak is showing signs of spreading further beyond the Whitehorse area and into rural communities as well.

The Carcross/Tagish First Nation has issued a notice there are cases in the community and has largely shut down its government.

Burwash Landing has announced it has one case, and is taking comparable measures for the Kluane First Nation. It has issued a notice that any citizens showing virus-type symptoms must self-isolate for 14 days.

Travel in and out of the community is also being discouraged.

Enforcement measures could be employed if necessary.

The Kwanlin Dun First Nation has said it has two cases in the McIntyre neighbourhood of Whitehorse.

The Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation government in Dawson City has also had an exposure with an individual positive for COVID-19 who was in its administration building.

The government offices there will be accessible only to pre-booked appointments.

Dawson Mayor Wayne Potoroka went public last week to acknowledge the municipality had a case.

These announcements come in spite of an edict from the government and health officials not to publicly identify communities.

Government officials believe such identification could “stigmatize” affected communities.

There are no plans to change the policy, Elliott said today, despite the communities starting to do end-rounds around it.

With the exception of one worker at the Victoria Gold Mine, Elliott said, all cases involved people either unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated.

That includes one of the students infected.

Vaccines haven’t been available for youth aged 12-17 for any of them to be fully vaccinated.

“All community cases are contact cases,” Elliott said.

“Either it’s residents of Whitehorse, people who have been in Whitehorse, or who have been in contact with people who have been in Whitehorse.

“I am concerned about this outbreak. We don’t want any more cases or more severe cases. We’re working extremely hard to trace contacts.”

Currently, more than 100 people have been identified as contacts, which will take some time to sift through.

“If you know you are a contact of a case, you need to isolate,” she said.

All contacts of a person with COVID-19 must isolate for an entire 14 days since last exposure.

Contacts who are fully vaccinated must isolate only if they are a household contact of a person with COVID-19.

A household contact is defined as living with a case or having direct physical contact (e.g. caregiver, partner) even if not living with an individual.

Contact means sharing saliva, or coughing on another person, talking for 15 minutes without physical distancing and other similar types of shared activities.

For anyone who is fully vaccinated, Elliott said it is believed it would require prolonged contacts, such as with a household member, to be at risk.

“We are seeing this outbreak in groups of people who are not yet vaccinated,” Health and Social Services Minister Tracy-Anne McPhee in a news release.

“It is a strong reminder of how important it is to get your shots in order to protect our loved ones and our communities.

“We can slow the spread down by doing our part; you can book your vaccine appointment at any time.

“Please follow the Safe 6 + 1, maintain your social bubbles diligently, and I encourage all Yukoners to continue to self-monitor for symptoms.”

Elliott said a tally hadn’t been made yet of how many cases are related to the Porter Creek Secondary School situation.

The total number of cases in the Yukon is now 104.

Dear - Uncle sayer - Your statement is racist and indicative of a low quality education - Old Testament… FFS! You find references to ‘defiler’, defilement etc in many world religions but hey… Let’s go with your ignorance.

However, defiler in its secular meaning suggest that one makes something impure, taints or pollutes something, possibly even poisoning it - This is what wokeism does - defiles the speaker and the receiver both while poisoning the collective well.

So, it is clear that you have made many assumptions based on the baggage of your perceptions - This is the big problem we face right now because wokies are unable see past the ignorance of their own machinations and they therefore ‘defile’!

What we have here is a whole lot of over analyzing. All that people have to take away from this situation is that the Liberals are the good guys and the Yukon Partiers are the pukes.

@ Not a Stereotype - you made my day lol on Jun 17, 2021 at 9:25 am - There was no attempt to link intelligence and education by Not a Stereotype. That was your inference based on the baggage that you carry. At my University we used to have this saying about the word ‘assume’…

Your post is really indicative of the pettiness that society has settled into as a some sort of defensive weapon of a first strike mentality. Maybe this person is simply educated about the effectiveness of the vaccine, maybe this person is educated about the dangers of groupthink, and the tendency towards knee jerk emotionalism that fuels destructive impulses.

If this is an indication of the quality of your education I would suggest you look into the possibility of getting a refund. The dangers of a lack of education are surmountable however the dangers of low quality education are not.

I recognize that it has become fashionable to be anti-intellectual, anti-expert, anti-education as a means to greater inclusivity but society cannot survive a return to ignorance… We see that now in crystal clear vision with the wokeism that has ‘defiled’ the collective intelligence…

Go away defiler!

You're trying to make some kind of correlation between 'education' and 'intelligence'? The standing (bad) joke in my university days was 'Why do Ph.D candidates only wear sandals and loafers?' 'Because they don't want everyone to know that they can't tie their shoes.' Of course that's not totally true; many people with good educations are very intelligent and capable of making good decisions, as are many people who haven't had the benefit of a post-secondary education. I believe there is a correlation however, between 'higher education' and 'smugness', and possibly between 'higher education' and 'obstinance'

The FH Collins grad at Takhini Arena followed strict guidelines, and they seem to have worked. I don't know how many people were there - each grad was allowed 2 guests. But 1500? No. It's comments like yours that get people fired up, even though 'not true'.

Very interesting how many people see the lies they feed us....it's truly about the divide and conquer mentality. I'm proud of the people clear minded enough to see the truth...this is money and control like always....we all fight each other as the elite class laugh in our face...people say oh let's lockdown again no big deal....where are you coming from with that statement...lockdowns hurt many people..suicide is up...depression up...mental capacity down...economy toast...but spoiled Canadians have no idea what that means...you vaxx pushers are a big problem...how bout I come to your household and decide what's right for your family...well don't worry that's coming...this is history repeating itself and where we going is not a happy ending...

Hello Dr. Evil - You are absolutely spot on with your apparent sarcasm. There is a long and varied history of social medical abuses by the medical profession globally and in Canada. It’s almost like people wrap themselves in a cloak of ignorance as if there were some protection of immunity from doing so. People are as ignorant as they choose to be but at some point it just becomes comforting…. A self-soothing indulgence from the world of adult responsibility.

There were the McGill University mind control/mind erasure experiments.
Non-consensual sterilization of Canadian and Canadian Indigenous peoples.
The experimentation on Indigenous peoples with small pox and food deprivation studies.

We now know that the entirety of the pharmaceutical industry (mental health) is an experiment as it is not known how they work - Thus applies to mono therapies as well as the practice of poly pharmacy.

But hey… It’s not like it’s neuroscience and I have a background in psychology and neuroscience or something.
The people who neigh, bray and baaa according to the whims and wishes of their political masters are the dumbest of the flock… While the carnivores tear apart their sheepish carcasses they cry… Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full…

I find it quite comical that the assumption is if you are unvaccinated, you're stupid or selfish, etc. I am educated, hold a good job on the front lines and am unvaccinated. I believe in my body, my choice, and I do not need to justify my decision to anybody. I am not an antivaxxer (I am vaccinated against all kinds of things and even get the flu shot). But, I am not hesitant anymore thanks to the straight up coercion and intimidation people have been throwing at me.
I have fully decided not to be harassed into making a medical decision based on mob mentality. There are many who cannot be vaccinated due to allergies or medical conditions, how do you think they feel being lumped into a category by all of you and called down regularly. Great job on staying divided everyone, the more we are at each other on this, the more we keep our eyes shut to the actual problems going on (like the fact that our currency has been printed into oblivion and future generations will suffer under this crushing debt, many of our country persons already can't afford homes and inflation isn't transitory, it's here to stay).

Now that all those who wanted the covid vaccine have taken it, that should be the end of the story. But no, the vaccine coercion is still ramped up.

How is it that there’s a covid ‘outbreak’ in one of the most vaccinated area of the planet? At over 75% aren’t we supposed to have reached ‘herd immunity’? These ‘chief medical officers’ fail to address many glaring discrepancies. Such as:
- the PCR tests are flawed, if too high a CT it results in a false positive. Which CT level is used here?
- the PCR test may detect a particle of a coronavirus which could be the common cold, not necessarily covid.
- The vaccinated can still be infected and transmit the virus, so the source of any ‘outbreak’ could be the vaccinated allowed to travel to the Yukon without quarantine.
- The good doctor claims that if the vaccinated become infected they only have mild symptoms, and will not be transmitting much virus around. But then so are the unvaccinated that caught the virus and have no symptoms or only mild ones, so why isolate those people?
- It’s a fact that the covid virus is now endemic all over the globe, it will never be completely eradicated, just like the flu, vaccine or no vaccine. So why are these good doctors acting as if the goal is to eradicate it with restrictions, masks, etc.
- For over a year now, we have proof that lockdowns and masks don’t stop the spread of the virus. Expert virologists will tell you those measures don’t work. So why are our politicians still imposing such destructive measures on society? Why not simply protect and support the vulnerable?

Let me get Mathews logic, low death rates are a result of the covid being overblown and not the result of the safe 6 plus intervention by the respective governing authorities auctioning the advice of the best medical professionals. Due to such a low mortality rate we need not apply any common sense rules such as washing your hands.

I could argue then, that since there is such a low instance of drowning that no one should bother wearing s life jacket. But I won't cause it would be just plain stupid to try to convince the 2/3 of the population that knows better then to test Darwin's theory.

"It's no worse than a case of flu."
Actually, the seasonal flu is far more deadly for young people, Young people are scarcely affected by COVID; they are less likely to develop symptoms, and any symptoms that do develop are likely to be minor.

Rather than letting the kids develop natural immunity, the "good" doctors are determined to force them to take a jab. Gotta keep that fear porn going.

The virus is now and will continue to be endemic (never going away) to our species and our society. Welcome to the new normal. Get the jab, folks. The government has done its part and now the time has come for reciprocity from the hesitant crowd in the form of taking personal responsibility. That’s the other side of the social contract. Don’t break it with selfishness and fear or government will have no choice but to impose lockdowns again.

Last week, Thursday or Friday evening I drove past Takhini Arena and there were at least 350-400 cars in the parking lot, you couldn't have squeezed in 1 more. I asked someone what was going on and apparently it was some sort of Grad event. With that many vehicles in the lot I would guess 1500 or more in the small Arena? How did this pass Muster? I sympathize with the kids but the proof is in the pudding.

Those who have not are shrugging off the impacts and even deflecting into politics by saying that doctors are taking over the world. This second group is the real target of the Darwin test that is underway and ultimately following the logic of natural selection, the human race will be smarter and stronger after the herd has the weak, stupid and foolhardy thinned from its ranks.

Judging from the scores on the comments it pretty much emulates the political landscspe of 2/3 liberal and NDP and 1/3 conservative...hmmm, is there a correlation ?

The lie is that you must be vaccinated and that this is the only prudent course of action.

It is a lie. A grand embellishment, amplified by the media, public health "authorities", politicians, government authoritarians, intelligence agencies, social media platforms, medical "experts" and a large swath of the public who have been sold a false bill of goods. The lie is staring us all in the face, and yet many refuse to even contemplate it. We are living in perhaps the greatest censorship and thought control experiment in all history.

The end goal - as it has been from the very start - is to coerce you to take an experimental vaccine.

I’ll be dammed if we are forced to go backwards because of a handful of idiots that either refused to follow orders or were too ignorant to get vaccinated.

People travelling into the territory are supposed to isolate if not fully vaccinated. Whoever started this, will they be tracked down and fined? If not it seems inevitable that this will keep happening.

Has the good doctor (Mr Hanley) gone into hiding now that his rules have clearly not worked? The press conference today was even more vague than usual, no real answers given, just rhetoric to stir up fear in the masses and sow distrust amongst peers. How much longer will we live under the tyrannical rule of the Lieberal Government? When will the civilian psyche finally break? How many more people will sink further into mental illness before help comes? These are questions the reporters should be asking!
