Three Whitehorse men who pleaded guilty to wasting sheep meat have each been fined $750, and one of the three was fined an additional $500 for providing false information.

The meat and horns from three sheep shot on Mount Arkell, located 45 kilometres west of Whitehorse east of the Takhini River inside subzone 7-13 were also seized.

Clayton Thomas, 28, was fined recently for wasting Dall sheep meat and indicating the wrong subzone where the hunt took place when he filed his mandatory report with Environment Yukon.

Aran Coates, 26, and Chris Kostelnik, 25, were both fined for wasting meat.

Territorial Justice of the Peace Dean Cameron also prohibited all three men from obtaining another sheep hunting seal until they've completed the sheep hunting workshop provided by Environment Yukon staff.

Investigating conservation officer Kris Gustafson said today the fines were in the low range because of the small amount of meat that was wasted, and all three men were co-operative in the investigation and entered guilty pleas early.

"There was a complaint received by somebody who thought they may have seen some sheep wasted in the Trout Lake area,” he explained.

Gustafson said he and another officer immediately flew into the area last Aug. 2 and recovered three Dall sheep carcasses.

"They had been field dressed and a small amount of meat had been left on all three carcasses,” he said. "It was not a large amount of meat and that's why the fines here are not on the high end . . . but it was definitely meat wastage.”

Gustafson said road killed meat that is still edible or meat that is seized is distributed to a long list of recipients. They include first nations, the Salvation Army and many Yukoners on a medical list who require wild game meat for dietary reasons.
