Hundreds inspired to attend climate strike event

Hundreds of people joined the Global Climate Strike Kick-Off early Friday afternoon at city hall.

By Gabrielle Plonka on September 23, 2019

Hundreds of people joined the Global Climate Strike Kick-Off early Friday afternoon at city hall.

The youth-driven strike was the first event of a global week-long movement demanding climate action. The event was in part inspired by the FridaysForFuture campaign inspired by 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg.

The Whitehorse rally was one of more than 2,000 similar strikes in 163 countries in what activists estimate may have been the largest climate protest in world history. Activists estimate four million people marched on Friday.

“At the rate that we are going, even if we do have a future, we don’t think it’s going to be a very successful and maintainable one,” said Kate Hannah, a 17-year-old Porter Creek Secondary School student.

“We told our teachers ‘we need to do this, instead of going to our English class. We don’t need to know Shakespeare if we’re not going to have a future.’”

Naomi Dedon, 17, agreed that climate change is a major issue of concern in her life.

“Climate change is becoming more of an issue, and we’re not seeing the companies or the government doing things about it, and we need change now. Now is an important time to be doing something,” she said.

The attendees carried signs, chanted and walked in a loop from city hall to Main Street and back.

Many students said they hope the rally will help to amplify the voices of youth calling for change.

“It doesn’t feel like we’re being heard, and it’s really nice to be a part of this and get our point across,” said 16-year-old Breda McIntyre, a Vanier Catholic Secondary School student.

“I think it’s time we start moving in a positive direction, because it seems we’ve been stopped for a while now. It would be nice to go somewhere.”

Multiple students from F.H. Collins Secondary School attended the rally. Many are enrolled in the high school’s social justice class or are members of the social justice club.

Janet Clarke, a social justice instructor at F.H. Collins, said the club worked together to prepare for the rally.

“We made signs on Tuesday,” Clarke said. “It’s a pretty good group, and there’s certainly some passion there.”

The social justice club at F.H. Collins has been active for about 20 years and the club’s action focuses on issues important to students, Clarke noted. Lately, she said, climate has been the club’s first priority.

“We meet once a week and we advocate, we fundraise and we educate the school about the issues,” Clarke said.

Emma Marnik, 17, is one of the social justice club’s members. She spent most of Friday’s rally directing traffic as students marched.

“I am very into climate justice,” she said. “I’m willing to sacrifice part of my education time to bring that attention to adult politicians who are not listening to us.

“We don’t have a say in the next election, we do not get to vote for what matters to us, so we’re hoping this will show other people what is actually important to the youth right now.”

Marnik said she was planning to join Thunberg in an additional strike on Saturday. Thunberg planned to be in Montreal for the event.

“I’m missing the election by 2 1/2 months, and I’m pretty upset about that because I feel like I’m educated about what’s going on in my country and I’d like to have my say.”

Marnik hopes to one day earn a degree in environmental science with the intention of going into environmental law.

Marnik wasn’t the only student who attended the protest hoping to speak up in lieu of voting in the upcoming election.

“We want to make a difference,” said 17-year-old Claire Campbell. “At this point, in time we can’t vote, but being part of the protest is showing people what we believe in.”

Campbell, another F.H. Collins student, said she co-ordinated with her teachers to plan for catch-up work periods so she could attend the rally without sacrificing her studies.

Campbell said she became a climate activist in the last year when she began to read more research describing how time is ticking to reverse climate catastrophe.

“Last year was when I started to feel like we really needed to act,” she said.

Eleanor Macmillan, 17, said she was happy to be at the rally but wished for a bigger turnout.

“I think more of us should be out here,” she said. “It should be a school event.”

Still, Macmillan said it was a good feeling to join the other strikers at city hall.

“It feels pretty awesome,” she said. “I like that so many people are here and everyone is supporting this idea.”

“It’s a cool energy,” agreed 17-year-old Sarah Milton.

Heather Mislang, a 15-year-old Vanier Catholic student, called the rally “exhilarating.”

“It’s so fun to walk around with people who think the same thing as you do,” she said. “It’s coming together in cohesion, it feels like you have power.”

Derek Deuling, 17, said he was happy to attend the rally and also happy to see some of his F.H. Collins instructors in attendance.

“Climate change is really what defines our future at the moment, and that’s really important to me,” he said.

Many Whitehorse families also attended the rally.

Roma Dobrowolsky attended the event with her daughter and granddaughter.

“I think our inaction is totally irresponsible, and it’s time that people recognize this is everybody’s responsibility,” she said.

Dobrowolsky added she was disappointed that city council chose not to declare a climate emergency last Monday. (The relevant motion is back on the agenda for this evening’s meeting.)

“It’s passing the buck,” Dobrowolsky said. “But we all have a role to play, at every level of government.”

Faith Whiting attended the rally with her three children, all of whom marched with different priorities.

Whiting’s six-year-old son, Orion Biggin-Pound, decorated a protest sign depicting animals, a cause Whiting said is dear to his heart.

Ten-year-old Elijah Biggie-Pound said his biggest point of concern is pollution.

“I don’t want to live in a world where it’s really polluted, I want to act now,” he said.

Elijah’s and Orion’s sister, eight-year-old Ember Biggin-Pound, agreed that pollution was of major concern to her.

“It feels good,” Ember said about the rally. “There’s a lot of people trying to change it, and I like that.”

Whiting said her family watched videos of youth activist Thunberg together, and learned that kids can be climate activists alongside adults.

“That was pretty inspirational,” Whiting said.

Two federal election candidates were present at the rally. Green Party candidate Lenore Morris told the Star it was uplifting to see such a high turnout for climate action.

“It’s great to see there’s that many people interested in environmental issues,” she said.

“I really want these issues dealt with, and it’s just fantastic that many people who are also keen and passionate will turn up.”

New Democratic Party candidate Justin Lemphers, who also attended, said he’s hoping “that this is a tipping point.

“This is the message to city hall because we want climate action,” he said. “My hope is that those who need to make decisions about climate action are taking into account the many people who showed up today.”

@JC Yeah right. You are as much of an "environmental scientist" as you are a Formula 1 car driver. Climatology would not even exist as a field of study if you were correct and it's all some hooky global conspiracy. Just admit that you are a luddite conservative with no background in science whatsoever. That is why you are simply parroting conservative talking points instead of scientific ones.

I am an environmental scientist. I went to school for it, I practice it, I measure climate, water levels, groundwater levels, you name it, I have measured it. I am sorry to burst your "Science-based" bubble, but Climate Change is a twitter and facebook phenomena. I have been asked by many to include climate change effects in the assessments I do, and I can not, because there is too much variability among data, between data, yearly, weekly, 5 year, 10 year, 20 year, 100 yer, 200 year spans. Climate is variable!!! Climate...wait for it...CHANGES! Oh, and Greta, you needed mining and the Petroleum Industry to build your race yacht...solar panel and all..and for your fleece and gortex outerwear, and for the tires on your bicycle...and for your entire bicycle for that matter.

There is a good chance that Yukon will elect Jonas Smith, a Conservative. If that happens then all of this momentum is for nothing. Conservatives will roll back all of the progress made up to this point. Remember that when it comes time to vote. Liberals and Conservatives are neck and neck right now.

Canada has 2 official languages...English AND French....

It's not gigantic to begin with....and you don't build for today's capacity, you build for the future. The plan is to keep the students and not see them migrate to other schools because of space, programming, courses offered and lack of equipment.

This doesn't cost anymore than it should... as like I said... remember.... OFFICIAL LANGUAGE... it's a birthright. Oh, can you tell me how big the wait list was for W.E.S this year? Guess french isn't all that bad ....

I'm more worried about the millions that are spent on the war on drugs... and guess what... we are still losing.
Taking climate change and turning it into french school bashing... good job!

Read the writing on the wall, the voters demand action on this issue. It doesn't matter what the few deniers of science mumble about, knives, Pakistan, false science, money grab by politicians or a conspiracy by the UN to take your rights away just to name a few.

Those politicians that don't heed the voice of the voters are doomed to the ash heap of irrelevancy.

Shame on most of the comments here regarding Greta Thunberg. 16 Years old and willing to stand alone in what shes knows to be right. Willing to stand and be ridiculed. Willing to face world leaders and maintain her stance, her composure, and stay on point.

When's the last time you got off your ass and stood for anything at all?

As a species we have lost sight of what was a drive to survive. Thankfully there appears to be an upcoming generation that is not afflicted by the views of the myopic past number of generations and knows that we need to do better, in order to survive and thrive on a global scale. Nationalism and regionalism, among many other petty and distracting human traits, will do us all in as we squabble vehemently over things that we really know little about, and care less about if it means having to change our outlook.

I have great hope in people like Greta. They are calling out those in power, and who possess power we can only dream of. They are chastising them for being so petty and short sighted, at best. They are chastising them for possessing great power and either doing little with it or using it for their own gain at the expense of many who, while possessing the same rights as the rich and powerful, have their rights over run of money, greed or power say it will be so.

Shame on you all. Worst case, what if Greta and her ilk ended up building a better world for nothing?
You would crack and become gibbering awkward idiots were you placed in her position I'd be willing to wager.

You doubt it with completely baseless facts, “oh well, it doesn’t feel any hotter outside” of course it doesn’t! That’s not how climate change works! This has been an emergency for years, there are climate science degrees in every university in every corner of this planet. And yet you still call bulls*it. I wonder what their response would be if they were asked to do away with all their toys like, cell phones, Ipads, tablets, and computer games which also contribute to the climate problem in order to set an example to all the adults in Whitehorse. I envision a major meltdown occurring, that would also contribute to the warming of the earth!

On the heels of warnings by the head of the World Meteorological Association against making exaggerated claims about the climate, we have this. Outlandish claims about the destruction of the planet. Scaring children and using them as propaganda props. Way to go, adults! Good parenting. And, all of the teachers promoting this idiocy should be disciplined.

From other reporting, it appears this nonsensical lobbying has paid off as City Council has apparently passed the "climate emergency" resolution despite its glaring problems. Are we governed by children? Apparently so.

Please show me the climate emergency in the Yukon. People freezing to death? Nope. People dying due to heat waves? Nope. People dying due to floods? Nope. Hurricanes? Nope. Tornadoes? Nope. Massive property or infrastructure damage due to climate change? Nope.

Please show me how carbon taxes and other massive changes demanded by the cult of climate catastrophe will make even the slightest difference in CO2 levels or climate in the Yukon. Perversely, those dramatic and costly mitigations will rob these very children of their future well-being. What a strange world we live in.

I don't think the sky is falling"chicken little". The Planet cools and warms in cycles but look at this possibility, In 1970 there were 3.686 Billion people on Earth, Today there are roughly 7.7 Billion people here. I was taught if you were ever suffering from hypothermia and were with someone willing to disrobe and join you NAKED under the covers in the woods, body heat would warm you up. Do you think maybe that the population has something to do with "Global Warming"?

In fact, the arctic and ant-arctic have been cooling down over the last 15 years. "Adults who are not listening to us"? It should be the other way around - the young listening to the adults. When did this generation of youth get the idea that they have all the knowledge and wisdom today? The gurus like David Susuki, Al Gore and the like gave them that idea and they are running with it. By the way, did these young people even learn the truth about "Carbon/Carbon Dioxide? As I said in a previous comment, it is not dirty soot, it is invisible gases, where all life on the planet depend on. I learned this in grade school many years ago.
Instead of cutting classes, maybe these young people should continue their classes in Shakespeare, if that is still being taught. Don't worry about the planet, it will take care of itself. Just do something about the pollution around you. Keep your space clean and pass it on. The sky is not falling in. And one more thing, good luck with paying for all the climate change taxes you will be paying in the future. My generation won't be paying off the huge Liberal debt and deficits. You're going to need all that knowledge and wisdom trying to figure out how to solve that problem some day soon.
When that day comes, you're going to wish you had studied Shakespeare and not cut classes.

Just remember that only the People's Party of Canada will not support the Paris accord and will withdraw.. eliminate the carbon tax and not replace it.
One of Andrew's first actions as leader was to ensure all conservative MPs voted in favour of the Paris accord on June 6, 2017. The conservatives vow to meet the targets and instead of a carbon tax they plan to implement a price on carbon by way of cap and trade and more subsidies for select businesses and other fees and administrative procedures to reduce carbon dioxide which is in fact a necessary gas for all life on earth.
