The Humane Society Yukon’s new executive director says looking after animals is a passion to him.

Whitehorse resident Dan Moore will begin his new job Jan. 4.

The executive director’s role is integral to the society’s ability to achieve its strategic goals, the organization said Monday.

In addition to directing the day-to-day operations of the Mae Bachur Animal Shelter, the executive director is responsible for promoting the humane treatment of animals by setting an example of high-quality care for animals under the society’s protection.

Moore told the Star early this afternoon he saw the job as a rewarding opportunity he wanted to take on.

“It’s a passion,” he said, noting he’s had animals throughout his life.

Moore will work closely with the board of directors to ensure the society’s financial stability, including fundraising initiatives.

He will liaise with community and government officials to promote the core components of the society’s mission.

Moore brings with him experience in both the management and general animal care sides of the job.

He has worked in the North for many years.

He’s previously worked for the Yukon government and spent some time working in the community of Whati in the Northwest Territories. There, he and his wife found themselves as a sort of unofficial SPCA representatives dealing with stray dogs.

“It kind of started there,” Moore said of his work in finding homes for animals.

Since stray dogs in the community were a safety concern, they were often destroyed.

Moore and his wife worked to help find homes for the animals as well as educating the public about the animals.

Moore has a certificate in Animal Care from Durham College, Ontario.

He worked extensively with the N.W.T. SPCA to further initiatives to rescue stray, injured and abused dogs and cats.

He has left a legacy in Whati of more humane treatment and greater community responsibility for pets.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dan to the HSY team,” said society president Brent Slobodin.

“His management, supervision and budget control skills, as well as his passion for animals, will be critical to helping the society meet its strategic goals.”

Moore said he hopes to work with the board to continue educating the public on the humane treatment of animals as well as making the 17-year-old Tlingit Street shelter a vibrant part of the community. He encourages volunteers to help out.

Moore succeeds Betty Irwin in running the shelter.

My Christmas wish for Dan: 1. Better utilize volunteers (e.g have them write about behaviour of animals they spend time with so postings are more than just pictures - how an animal looks is the LAST reason you should adopt AFTER considering if it's the right fit - direct volunteers with written task/how to lists, also save staff time by re-utilizing that volunteer prof photographer), 2. Ongoing clear info on how to help like donating Independent Grocer receipts, the supplies needed list & tiny FB pics disappear on timeline, 3. Improved direction/coordination/consistency re the public e.g. action on fostering & adoption depends on which staff you talk to. The staff are hard working & extremely caring w/fab animal care & few resources. Best wishes to MBAS staff & Board for a prosperous New Year.

A less scared dog for showing off would have been more sensible.
