David Laxton, the Yukon Party MLA for Porter Creek Centre and the speaker of the legislature, has confirmed his intention to run in the coming election.

In early April, he sought the nomination, and has been acclaimed as the candidate.

“It’s been a distinct honour to serve the constituents of my riding and at the same time to serve every Yukoner,” Laxton said Wednesday.

“I can think of no higher privilege, or greater experience, than to work with and act on behalf of family, friends, and neighbours working toward one end: making a better life.”

Laxton first ran in the riding in the 2006 election, as a member of the Yukon Liberal Party, losing to then-Yukon Party cabinet minister Archie Lang.

Laxton won the riding in the 2011 election after having left the Liberals to join the Yukon Party.

“The riding has grown in size over the years, bringing with it new challenges and opportunities,” Laxton said.

“I love my community, and the Yukon Party is working diligently to create a positive and prosperous Yukon.”

The Liberals and the Yukon Party - interchangeable parts. It's all about who's most likely to be the winning team to people who just want power and the perks that come with it.

Yes, military service can be a good thing, but no to pompous self importance because you have served.

David Laxton, has done more for the people of the Yukon and Canada than any of you arm chair quarter back nay Sayers!
Public service is tough. Why don't some of you back seat thunder heads step in and serve.
When the Speaker was raising money for the Yukon Cancer Foundation what were any of you doing!
When Mr Laxton was supporting the Cadets ensuring good responsible leaders were training the Yukons future generations as well as his service to Canada in the Military, what were any of you doing! Probably complaining safe in your living room surrounded by the security provided by people like Mr David Laxton and others.

I watch the Leg on TV and Mr. Laxton, while he may be a nice person, is the worst House Speaker EVER.

*BNR- well said. You are right of course.

Joe and Jane
There are plenty (ok, maybe not "plenty") of good people in the YP ranks. Same as the NDP and the Libs. There are politicians who sincerely want to do a good job for us. Then there is the YP brain trust, who seem to only be in it for themselves and their cronies. Mr. Laxton IS a good guy. Currie is a good guy. Kevin Barr is a good guy, so is Sandy Silver.
But after a while, if a party has been in power too long, well, it's good to shake things up.
