Horse banished to barn; sternwheeler stays afloat

It's official.

By Chuck Tobin on May 26, 2011

It's official.

The horse is back in the barn and the sternwheeler's away.

City council has officially approved the push to keep the riverboat as the city's official logo, albeit with a bit a face-lift to bring it into the 21st century.

The split vote at Tuesday night's meeting ends a vigourous public debate over the last few months regarding council's initial move toward a nouveau image of a fancy-lookin' horse with a big "W” for a mane.

Only after local resident Vanessa Brault plopped an 845-name petition on the steps of city hall just days before council was scheduled to adopt the thoroughbred from Ontario did the elected leaders agree to take another look at re-floating the sternwheeler.

Four of the six council members present Tuesday voted to keep the boat. They did so after a second public survey came back in solid support for what many believe is the mother of all transportation in the territory.

Some have argued the sternwheeler represents the backbone the Yukon; that it was the sternwheeler plowing the rivers of the territory which helped make the Yukon what is today.

Others have said it makes them think of Mark Twain and the Mississippi River.

Mayor Bev Buckway voted against the motion at Tuesday's meeting, as did Coun. Florence Roberts.

Asked later why they rejected the overwhelming support shown for the sternwheeler in the second survey, Roberts swiftly pointed to the mosaic hanging on the wall above the mayor's chair.

"Tell me: what's the first thing you see?”

"A horse's head?”

The mayor, on the other hand, explained her objection was about process, not the artwork.

The city had already gone through an exhaustive public exercise to flush out a new look, she indicated, suggesting she didn't agree with the second time around deal.

"But what's your personal preference: the horse or the sternwheeler?”

"I'm not going there,” Buckway retorted.

In addition to embracing the sternwheeler, council voted to formalize the official tagline, "The Wilderness City”, which it already uses, along with "Striving for Excellence”.

"Above All Expectations” was also in the running.

Indicating he did not want to complicate matters for his colleagues, Coun. Dave Stockdale quipped that perhaps the tagline should be "The Wilderness City, Above all Expectations”.

After an initial survey several months ago regarding the city's three existing logos, council hired an Ontario firm for $48,000 to come up with new and single image, hence the horse.

Having an outside entity dictating to us what defines us is a real embarssment to the real Yukoners who are left here. I would imagine Jim Robb could of come up with something better. And you know what? He probably would of done it for free. The people who moved up here recently could care less if everything gets changed. They welcome change with open arms, as they want the Yukon to feel a little more like the place they left. Bev buckway on the other hand is the real thorn in the side of Whitehorse. Never in my life have I seen such an arogant dictator such as her. I still can't believe the residents of Whitehorse could re-elect someone who has absolutely no clue of how to be a leader, let alone a mayor. The only way these gremlins are running this town, is that of running it into the ground. *NEWSFLASH* WE ELECTED YOU. YOU ANSWER TO US, PERIOD. If you don't understand that, then you have no right to be in the positions you are in.

The ruling class got put in their place this time through an act of democracy. Enjoy it while you can because there is a new breed of movers and shakers in town who love changing and regulating the Yukon to make it much like back east.

$48000 to design a logo we aren't going to use. And every budget time of year mayor and council cry about how broke the city is and why they have to jack taxes again or cut our snow removal and garbage collection.

Am I the only person disgusted with what is being fed to us out of city hall? How much snow removal would $48000 have bought? Quite a bit I imagine.

..."with a little update to bring it into the 21st century?"...

Were we the people of Whitehorse speaking a different dialect than council...again!

I guess the leave it alone part was perhaps to abstract?

Personally the update is more likely the result of somebody refusing to accept the dozen or so eggs hanging on the faces of all those whom....

Helped piss yet MORE of our taxes down the drain.

Too embarrassed to actually admit the "move forward" was and is nothing but a COMPLETE waste of all time and monies.

I wonder besides the actual costs for this cut & paste horse, just how many hours was wasted sitting eating bagels & lattes by our reps at the hall...to discuss this nonsense?

Why don't we just have a town logo with somebody passed out on a park bench whom got so wasted for...20years... because getting hammered and hanging out downtown surpassed...all their expectations.

Hence, life passed by...

Way better representation of this Whitehorse...perhaps even better than the Sternwheeler?

stop worrying about dumb things council, so maybe our taxes, meters, etc.. dont go up every year. I could do a survey for free, never mind pay out 48 grand to a outside company.

Why do we yukoners always put the wrong peoples in office.

Wait a second. The majority of respondents to a survey with over 2500 submissions voted to choose the sternwheeler over the almost exact same logo used for Woodbine Racetrack and Casino... and the Mayor voted against it?

I'm sorry, but who cares what she believes? Given the huge number of respondents, compared to any other similar survey done by the city, she should have voted with what her employers wanted.
