Hundreds of friends and family members gathered at the Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre early Friday afternoon to celebrate the life of Jeff Young.
Young died June 10 in an ATV accident in the Cowley Creek area of Whitehorse. He was 18.
Young, who was riding with a friend, tried to sit side-saddle on his bike but lost control of the quad.
While Young was wearing a helmet, the bike rolled on top of him, causing internal injuries that led to his death.
Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, Whitehorse RCMP said.
The large convention room was filled to capacity. More people stood along the walls to listen to speeches about the well-liked young man.
'Honour Jeff's memory by living life to the fullest and follow your dreams,' his father, Rod Young, told the audience.
'We will miss him more than words can ever say.'
Jeff's teacher and friend, Jakub Jirousek, acted as the ceremony's MC. He introduced speakers and told stories that characterized Young as a caring person who tried to think of others first.
Jirousek told a story of Jeff's participation in an adult soccer league.
During one game, the youth had been running a lot and wanted to take some time on the sidelines. But each time he went to go off, one of the much older players also wanted to go off.
This happened several times and in the end, Jeff was stuck on the field until half-time, looking completely exhausted, the teacher said.
Jeff told the coach he didn't think he could go back on right after the break. His coach asked why he didn't come off sooner and Jeff replied, 'All those old guys were coming off,' related Jirousek.
'He would allow others to succeed even before he did,' he remembered.
A close friend of Jeff's also made a few comments.
'With Jeff, you were never bored,' he said.
He told of how Jeff would swoop everybody into some activity or fill the silence with jokes.
'Jeff was always happy Jeff loved what he did and did what he loved.
'He will never be forgotten; he made too much of an impact.'
Following the speeches, a slideshow showed Jeff growing up from a cute toddler to a handsome young man who seemed quietly confident, friendly and happy.
A video that Jeff made for one of his high school classes was shown afterward. The humorous self-introduction video showed him doing donuts in his truck and provided a few glimpses of his messy room.
At the beginning of the video, Jeff described himself as a daredevil.
While sniffles and tears were sprinkled throughout the audience, so were laughs and chuckles at the young man who had brought happiness to so many of them.
After the videos, one more song was played in Jeff's honour, Kenny Chesney's Who You'd Be Today.
'It ain't fair you died too young
Like a story that had just begun
But death tore the pages all away
God knows how I miss you
All the hell that I've been through
Just knowing, no one could take your place
Sometimes I wonder, who you'd be today.'
