The Yukon government is out to prove it’s still “hip”.
The government will be adding in-territory hip replacement services to its medical arsenal in the near future, according to a news release issued today.
Currently, all hip replacements are done out-of-territory.
“The Yukon Hospital Corporation (YHC) and the territory’s current two orthopedic surgeons have signed a memorandum of understanding to add a third surgeon to the orthopedic team and further enhance musculoskeletal services for Yukon,” the release stated.
“The additional orthopedic surgeon will help reduce wait times for elective surgeries and increase the number of surgeries conducted in the territory for patients who would otherwise have to travel out of territory for surgery.”
The new surgeon is expected to begin next month.
“The addition of a third surgeon will help reduce the wait time for in-territory knee replacements and allow for in-territory hip surgeries to begin,” the statement said.
The additional surgeon will also provide more opportunities for knee replacements.
“It is very exciting to be able to offer these increased services to Yukoners,” said Pauline Frost, the minister of Health and Social Services.
“Whenever possible, Yukon Hospitals seeks to expand the scope and availability of services for Yukoners,” added YHC chair Brian Gillen.
“More orthopedic services and expertise means Yukoners benefit from improved access to care, fewer delays, less travel, and the ability to recover right here at home.”

I guess Wilf you are the best positioned to know a lie when you hear one, since you tell them all the time. Here at least you do have decades of experience!

Ha snow flakes - At least I talk to doctors that are in the know, not like liberals who don't consult anyone. They think they know it all and put out one lie after another. Watch out Yukoners a lying liberal may come your way. Stay away because they are dangerous to all Yukoners health.

It has long been understood and widely acknowledged that hip operations are more likely to be successful with faster recovery and minimal after-effects in hospitals and surgical clinics that routinely (as in daily) perform these procedures.
I wonder . . . if I needed a hip replacement, would I choose to go to a hospital or clinic that has successfully performed many thousands of these operations? Or, would I go to WGH?

Spoke to a Dr at WGH and asked him about this news release and his response was “we were all caught off guard about this and we are not quite there yet” more liberal politicking, cart before the horse. It’s despicable how from the fed liberals on down they always put politics before health and everything is about the vote...so vote em out!

These Liberal enhancements are incredible and the Feds have added 278,000 new full time jobs to the economy in February!

A major breakthrough will be brain replacements. Or a psychic revolution based on the new brain science. We need to activate the reptilian part of the brain. That's when the healing happens.

Wilf,
You are an example of someone that grew up in a subterranean environment.
Continue to flood this forum with your drivel ..

So the consenses is if the government does something just after they are elected it's rushed without proper consultation. If it's done in the middle of their term they are cynical and if it's done near the end of their term they are vote buying. This begs the question, just when should a government do something?

Patti and Denis: how can you doubt Wilf? You should know by now that he has experience in EVERYTHING and is willing to share his expertise so generously with us (sarc).
Wilf: I know, I know, I have to go to your LinkedIn page where you have it all listed... (P.S. I know a doctor too, also a lawyer, a shoemaker, a salesperson and a plumber, doesn't make me an expert on any of those things)

I would like to recommend you double check your dates on this as I assure you, the next month start date is incorrect.

Hi Patti do have family and friends in the health care field? Maybe if you were not so high on your liberal horse you'd see the real ground or what taking place in health care. I know 3 mental health doctors who used to practice in Yukon and one is from Antigonish area same as myself and Sandy. These three people is where I got my information from.

I had one hip done in Vancouver 3 yrs ago. Now I need second hip done so I can move around without crutches or a walker and requiring a raised toilet. I am worried about covid at Vancouver General and the Air Travel back and forth.
Wilf: You usually have reasonable comments but you seem to now require a mental psychologist along with your buddy Hutton. You don't have the knowledge or experience to make any sane remarks regarding the equipment required at WGH.
Thank You Mr. Premier and Minister Frost.

@wilf: I’m sorry but your LinkedIn profile doesn’t say you have decades of experience in health care of any kind, I rather suspect you don’t know what you’re writing about!

It's too bad that good news such as this is delayed until the Liberals think it might be a more ostentatious time for them to release that news. When there is a dearth of good news, this certain has a good aura around it. We have two excellent Orthopedic surgeons, Westberg and Mosetyn I''m sorry..I did not spell your name properly. Who have been covering ankles, feet, hands, knees and arms. They have been such as asset. Hope our hip doctor will be as great.

I am happy with this but it screams of election time. They must sit on this stuff until election time. Or am I just a cynical?

That's great but where can hip replacement be done? Because the hospital does not have the equipment to do new hip replace surgery here.
I had mine replaced in Vancouver and I just talked to them and they do Yukon replacement on hips. Knees can be done here.
We need at least 6 mental health doctors in Yukon because there is much more of this is needed.
Don Hutton was trying to tell you that your people need help - he had no choice but to leave.
Sandy you and I talked about mental health in Yukon but you did nothing about it, why?
Where is this new doctor from?
