An Ontario hiker is dead after apparently attempting to cross a creek in Kluane National Park last week.
The man has been identified as Yoichi Kubota, 30, of Cambridge, Ont.
Kubota’s body was found last Thursday along Canada Creek in the Slims River Valley and Observation Mountain area. He had been hiking alone.
Kubota registered with Parks Canada on July 26, and was due out of the park last Wednesday, Yukon RCMP said in a news release this morning.
When he didn’t check in with Parks Canada on that date, a search was conducted by helicopter and his body was located.
Parks’ ground team and members of the RCMP Police Dog Service and Yukon Search and Rescue found Kubota’s body last Thursday evening.
“The incident is not considered suspicious at this time; however, further investigation into the cause of death and circumstances surrounding it is continuing,” the police statement said.
Yukon chief coroner Kirsten Macdonald said this morning she believes Kubota died last Tuesday.
An autopsy will be performed this week in Vancouver, but it appears the death is a result of exposure or the effects of cold water, she said.
The water in the creek was “frigid,” Macdonald said. “Beyond what we can imagine to be cold.”
The autopsy will determine cause of death – whether Kubota drowned or died of exposure, said the coroner.
