The Alaska Highway reopened Saturday after it was closed last Thursday night after a commercial transport truck collided with the Sikani River Bridge.

The explosion and fire immediately shut down the artery.

RCMP Sgt. Chris Manseau said this morning the bridge was reopened to single-lane traffic. That happened following an assessment by a bridge specialist, said Manseau, the acting senior media relations officer for the British Columbia RCMP.

The man driving the truck that collided with the bridge was killed, police confirmed.

The Sikani River bridge is located between Fort St. John and Fort Nelson, approximately 200 kilometres north of Fort St. John.

The commercial truck was carrying flammable liquids.

Trucks crossing the bridge are restricted to 1,500 kilograms.

Manseau said he did not have any word this morning about when the bridge might reopen to two-lane traffic.

An investigation into the cause of the fatal collision is ongoing.

RCMP members from Fort St. John, along with fire departments from Fort St. John and Fort Nelson attended and found the tanker completely engulfed and emitting a large plume of toxic smoke.

Terrible accident, my condolences to this drivers friends and family. For those who take this opportunity to blame others and comment on cost of living, take a minute to honour the passing of this person before flinging the mud.

On another note, my condolences to the family of the trucker who lost his life in this tragic event. I hope you can find solace and comfort in one another. May he or she rest in peace.

Last I read from BC was it was not open to commercial traffic - nor was a time frame given for when it will. In short brace yourselves for higher freight costs as the transports come up the Cassiar Hwy.

The article here of course missed that little gem of news.

DriveBC says passenger traffic only, no commercial as of 1pm. Please clarify how the highway is open. It is newsworthy if freight is still detoured.
