City council agreed, at its meeting Monday evening, to provide $2,000 in funding to support the Yukon/Stikine Regional Heritage Fair set for May 2 at Yukon College.

The city has provided assistance in previous years for the fair, which is organized by the Yukon Historical and Museums Association.

The event draws about 100 students, teachers, parents and members of the public from around the territory.

The lion’s share of financial support for the event’s $13,350 budget is being provided by a $10,000 contribution from the territorial Department of Education.

Mayor Dan Curtis will be giving an address to participants. As well, Coun. Samson Hartland will be a judge again this year, though the invitation has been extended to all members of city council.

Coun. Jocelyn Curteanu said Monday she learns something every time she visits the fair, and that it’s been particularly helpful for her as she’s not originally from the Yukon.

Cathy Hines is a longtime volunteer in the organization of the heritage fair. She told council Monday evening the fair increases awareness of the importance of heritage issues while promoting critical thinking skills.
