Here's how our MLAs used your tax dollars
While the economic crisis keeps many checking their wallets and looking for ways to save,
While the economic crisis keeps many checking their wallets and looking for ways to save, the Yukon's MLAs had no problem last year snorting another record amount of travel and living expenses from the public trough.
According to figures released last week, in 2008/2009, 18 MLAs charged the taxpayer a grand total of $293,000 ($42,000 more than 2007/2008) for accommodations and the cost of shuttling them to and fro around the Yukon, Canada and the world.
Tropical Malaysia was the host country of last August's Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference.
Taxpayers footed the $14,145.02 bill to send MLAs Ted Staffen (the House Speaker), Marian Horne (Justice Minister) and Gary McRobb (Liberal MLA for Kluane).
While Staffen's portion of that amount was a mere $909.26, a month earlier, the Speaker charged $3,272.48 to attend a CPA regional conference in Halifax. Liberal MLA Darius Elias' maritime jaunt to the same event cost $4,323.92.
But conferences at sunny or historic locales were not the only extracurricular travel MLAs enjoyed at the taxpayers' expense.
To attend the Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Music Festival in June, then the Dawson City Music Festival in July, New Democratic Party Leader Todd Hardy billed $1,638.81.
While more than $1,200 of that figure went toward delivering Hardy safely there and back from the Klondike's annual summer music blowout, taxpayers can take solace in the fact Hardy squeezed in a meeting with the Trondek Hwech'in First Nation while in Dawson City.
Special trips aside, once again Klondike MLA Steve Nordick (Yukon Party) topped the list of the assembly's biggest spending members as far as living allowances and travel expenses went.
Nordick produced a landmark $48,404.28 bill to taxpayers for government business trips and $1,089/month rent for Whitehorse digs in 2007/2008. He raised that bar this year to a whopping $52,506.38.
McRobb was a close second, charging taxpayers $51,958.42 to keep him mobile and under a Whitehorse roof for his legislative assembly appearances in 2008/2009.
Even if McRobb had skipped the Malaysian excursion (cost to taxpayer: $5,930.85), he would have maintained his silver finish.
Add that to McRobb's $80,947 annual base his MLA's salary and the representative for Kluane pocketed a cool $132,905.42.
While serving as deputy speaker earned Nordick an additional $10,445, all in, the Klondike MLA's annual salary plus expenses totalled $143,898.38.
In June 2007, MLAs' annual base pay was increased to $65,000 and is indexed each year to inflation.
Members are also paid $13,056, tax-free, for expenses not included as either travel or accommodation.
Ministers and the Leader of the Official Opposition are compensated an additional $36,557 and the premier gets another $15,667, as does the leader of the third party.
The house speaker is remunerated $15,667.
According to the Canadian Revenue Agency, the average personal income in the Yukon for 2006 was $42,411.
Hey, big spender!

I am seeing alot of facts and a couple of open questions, but no judging. $50+K is alot of money to come into Whitehorse per year for any of these people.
I find the expenses of going to the music fests a bit out to lunch personally...did Todd have a good performance when he was there and why did we pay for it.

Mr. Unrau, please submit to public scrutiny a copy of your travel claims to your employer so we may judge you blindly.

I DIDN'T KNOW THAT IT TOOK SO MUCH OF THE TAXPAYERS MONEY TO EXCITE THE HAPPY WONDERERS! I GUESS GETTING OUT OF THE TERRITORY AT ANY EXPENSE IS THE ANSWER.
I HAVE TROUBLE MAKING ENDS MEET LIKE ANYONE ELSE WHY SHOULD MY TAXES PAY FOR POLITICIANS WITH EMPTY POCKETS? I WERE TO DO THAT I WOULD BE FIRED... MIND YOU I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO GET THAT FAR AS THE BOSS WOULD HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY LIKE NO!
DON'T THESE PEOPLE HAVE SPENDING MONEY ON SUCH TRIPS? WHY BILL THE PUBLIC FOR YOUR FUN PEOPLE. THE MLAs FROM THE FUREST COMMUNITIES HAVE TEH SMALLEST BILL. WHY IS THAT.... I KNOW A DUMB QUESTION.

Interesting how the 8 members sitting across the floor spent more then the 10 YP members...
Also, does Gary McRobb even know where his riding is?! He seems to be traveling around an awful lot looking for it!

•When the expenses of the Caucus Members (Yukon Party) are added up they amount to $134,099.90.
•When the Expenses of the Official Opposition (including those of Edzerza's $1,487.11) are added up they amount to $133,648.80.
•This means that a Caucus of ten members has only spent $451.13 more than the Official Opposition which has 5 members (6 when including Edzerza).
•If you include the two member of the NDP ($11,127.62) then the 8 members across the floor have spent $144,776.42.
•That means that the 8 members across the floor have spent $10,676.49 more than the 10 members on this side.
•Whitehorse to Haines Junction = 155km
•Whitehorse to Dawson City = 529km
•Recognizing that it is a rural MLAs duty to travel to their constituency one must still wonder why the costs incurred by the Member for Kluane are so close to those of the Member of Klondike ($547.96)

Wow, what a surprise. Another snipey little article by Mr. Unrau taking potshots at local politicians. How incredible that generally, those MLAs located furthest from Whitehorse have accrued the biggest travel expenses.

Gee...At least the Nobles are having fun...at the expense of the peasents.
It would seem to me that zip has changed since the 16th Century!
What is the deal with Darius claiming over $1 000...MORE... for the SAME trip? Did he attend "culture camp" while he was in Halifax?
The four YP members that managed to get their job..."done" without claiming a cent? Is this politicing or do they love the job so much, that they suck it up themselves?
Come on Todd, $1 700 to get to TWO hippy fests? Perhaps your car needs a tune up...or did you travel by heli, or perhaps you took along the CPAWS board for the "fun" of a Yukon Hippyfest?
This entire Territory is INFECTED with the govy sence of entitlement from the elected windbags and all those whom snivel about them for a living...aka the opposition!
Never mind a newspaper or two in Whitehorse...since it feels like the 16th Century...we only need a town crier, to inform us as to what the Nobles are up to!
as a side bar...the gossip chain in Whitehorse at least, seems to be FAR quicker in uploading info vs the regime of NWT...and their "Fine Service"...and more reliable than some of the "journalism" I've read lately!

Wow!! $293K!!!
MLAs should be ashamed of themselves.
I totally understand MLAs who live in rural areas that require housing in Whitehorse - they have to formally represent their constituients in the House....
But I guess I'm wondering why there hasn't been a kibosh on any non-essential travel?
Malayasia? Halifax? Puuuh-leeze!!! That's definitely not essential travel. I can't even imagine why a Minister would *need* to leave the Territory to conduct *territorial* business?!
Hmmmm. Kind of shows Yukoners the lack of accountability the government really has - and this when they're questioning footing the bill for essential health-related travel ....($293K translates into roughly 533 round trip tickets on Air North at $550/each to Vancouver, Edmonton or Calgary)
Or ... I dunno ... Having problems lending low income families money for stable mortgages.
Hmmmm.
