Prime Minister Stephen Harper will be in the Yukon this coming weekend as part of his annual northern tour, Senator Dan Lang confirmed Friday.

This will be Harper's eighth annual tour, and in keeping with tradition, few details about his itinerary are being released in advance.

A spokesperson for the Prime Ministers Office said Friday more information would be released this week.

But the annual barbecue for Conservative supporters is on the agenda, Lang said.

"The fact that the prime minister comes here once a year, I think is very important for us in northern Canada, very symbolic for the country and it certainly gives a signal to federal civil service that the North is a priority and we very much appreciate the fact that the Prime Minister takes this time to come and visit us,” said Lang.

The prime minister arrived in Whitehorse for the start of his northern tour last year on Discovery Day, kicking off with a barbecue hosted at the Caribou Crossing Trading Post, near Carcross.

Members of the Carcross-Tagish First Nation protested outside the barbecue, calling attention to a funding dispute with the federal government.

The prime minister also visited Minto Mine during that trip, before jetting off to the Northwest Territories where he visited the site of a newly minted national park reserve.

Harper has consistently touted the importance of his northern agenda, highlighting his government's northern strategy. The strategy consists of four main pillars, exercising arctic sovereignty, promoting social and economic development, protecting environment heritage, and improving and devolving northern governance.

During his trip this year the prime minister will also visit the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and northern Quebec.

Our leader is coming for a visit again? AWESOME, as he and his team are what Canada needs more of...to cleanse ourselves of the germs that socialist love ins...Liebral smoke shows...and over the top PC Crusaders have borne unto us.

Steve...it would be awesome too if we could "shelve" the TFW (lol) program until we have ZERO % unemployment

Presumably, Harper will be flipping burgers at a BBQ over the upcoming long weekend.

But let's be fair to the guy - it's a skill that he can add to his resume when he job hunts in 2015.

Actually, the comment about residency was just to see if anyone was reading. MPs and MLAs are not bound by the residency restriction, and all of the parties have parachuted candidates from time to time. In BC, Premier Clark lost her seat on the lower mainland and now has one somewhere else. Brian M. was parachuted into Pictou County when he first became the Tory leader.

As for judgmental comments, I'm an equal opportunity critic. I do find the Harper Government an easy target, but I've nipped at everyone's heels over the last three decades. Note however, that I focus on what people do or don't do and endeavor to avoid generalizations about peoples' characters. Ad hominem arguments generally miss the real meat of the discussion.

Really Dan, if it was a Liberal Prime Minister would you be so judgmental?

What a silly question to ask if Mr. Harper is a resident of Calgary. Does that mean that all our elected politicians are not residents of the riding that elected them because they spend time in Ottawa? The Prime Minister must live in Ottawa. Please brush up on your politics before making silly remarks.

As for Mr Duffy and Ms Wallin I agree they should be turfed along with other Liberal senators that have been double dipping.

Dan Davidson is so full of dislike and is so far left he becomes incensed if anything positive is done or said by the tories. This is a very positive story and will benefit the north. Just once I would like to see an honest, unbiased comment from him.

These tours are so manifestly Conservative love-ins that they should be paid for by the Conservative Party rather than us taxpayers. What applies to Duffy and Wallin should apply to everyone.

By the way, does the PM actually live in Calgary enough to qualify as a resident?
