Harper plans Yukon swing
Prime Minister Stephen Harper is expected to visit the territory next week.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper is expected to visit the territory next week.
Harper is expected to be landing in Whitehorse on the morning of Aug. 16, Yukon MP Larry Bagnell told the Star this morning.
The prime minister will attend several meetings during the day. He will also host a dinner at the Yukon Convention Centre at the High Country Inn, then leave the territory later that night, said Bagnell.
'We've been advised the prime minister is considering a trip to the Yukon,' said Samantha McCulloch, a communications analyst with the territory's Executive Council Office.
Nothing is confirmed, she said, though further details are expected soon.
The High Country Inn, however, says the convention centre is booked for next Wednesday night, with an event labelled as the protocol dinner.
The Prime Minister's Office declined to confirm if Harper will be in town, citing security reasons.
Bagnell said Yukoners have told him there are three areas in which the Conservative government has been disappointing for the territory:
-
the cancellation of the $5-billion Kelowna accord aimed at reducing poverty gaps between aboriginal and non-aboriginal Canadians;
-
cuts and changes to day care programs and the implications they're having on fees in the territory; and
-
eliminating climate change programs.
'Those are the items I would raise,' said Bagnell.
He added he is hopeful Harper's meetings will be structured to allow Yukoners to highlight those concerns to the prime minister.
Stockwell Day, the federal Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness is also in the Yukon today.
This afternoon, Day is scheduled to make $737,467 in funding announcements for crime prevention initiatives for Yukon communities.
