A chronic thief has been sentenced to 15 months in jail after being convicted more than 50 times of theft under $5,000.
Wayne Jackson appeared in territorial court Friday afternoon after pleading guilty to four more theft charges.
Between July and September of this year, Jackson was witnessed stealing from four businesses around the city, the court heard.
On July 19, the 54-year-old was arrested after a man was seen running from the Real Canadian Superstore with four packages of steaks.
The meat, worth approximately $150, was later recovered.
About a week later, the RCMP were called to Walmart after Jackson was found with 18 DVDs hidden under his jacket.
Later in the summer, Jackson was also arrested after Canadian Tire employees reported seeing him running from the store with a TV.
On Sept. 20, he was arrested for the final time after allegedly being seen leaving Coast Mountain Sports wearing an $800 coat.
He has been at the Whitehorse Correctional Centre ever since.
Prosecutor Joanna Phillips called the thefts "brazen”.
She pointed out that Jackson was on probation for other theft convictions at the time.
Defence lawyer Malcolm Campbell said his client has a crack cocaine addiction and medical conditions that keep him from working.
The thefts were not violent and involved no property damage, Campbell said.

Can't wait for the new tough on crime bill to become law. Hopefully it will help incarcerate people like this who get away with endless crimes.

As the wheels of justice turn every so slowly, just think of the legal aid lawyers and court costs, never mind the price of steaks. Then think of the costs to incarcerate this individual month after month in our new jail with all the creature comforts that make winter so much easier to handle. Life is good in the Yukon for people from all walks of life.

There's no hope for this jerk. Lock him up & throw away the key! Unfortunately people buy the items that are stolen. They should be locked up too. Guilty, guilty, guilty and very shameful. How disgusting.
