Grizzly shot after charging officer

The Lake Creek Campground is closed this week after a grizzly bear wreaked havoc on the site's garbage bins.

The Lake Creek Campground is closed this week after a grizzly bear wreaked havoc on the site's garbage bins.

The campground south of Beaver Creek was closed Tuesday after a report was phoned in that a grizzly bear caused significant damage to some garbage bins.

Conservation officers attempted to trap the grizzly and remove it from the campground.

They ended up having to shoot it when it damaged a vehicle and charged an officer.

"Unfortunately, the bear was not in a mood to be relocated,” Nancy Campbell, a communications officer for

Environment Yukon, said today.

Campbell said the bear was probably trying to protect a horde of food it had collected around a garbage bin when it charged the officer.

The campground will remain closed for camper safety until Yukon Parks crews can repair the garbage containers.

"Until they're up and running again, it's not safe for bears or people,” said Campbell.

The campground is expected to reopen Tuesday.

Yukon Parks reminds campground users to keep their waste in a bear-resistant container at all times.

Nearby alternatives to Lake Creek Campground are Snag Junction, 50 kilometres to the north, and Congdon Creek, 120 kilometres south.

For once Francias, I agree with you!!!!!

We live in THEIR yard... not vice - versa..... That camp ground is way out in the friggen sticks!!!! The bear was going after garbage bins - which means they probably weren't being maintained well....this doesn't mean the bear is habituated.... it wasn't in a neighborhood in the city.... IT WAS IN THE WILDERNESS...ACTING WILD!!! Go figure!

If one tranquilizer dart didn't work, keep trying!!!!

I have yet to read a story where a conservation officer actually CONSERVES something!!!!

Poor Bear........

FACT: "My life is worth more than this bears to me personally." My idea of what went through the conservation officers head.

I agree that a life is not meant to be taken lightly. However the fact remains that the co was protecting himself by taking the bears life when it charged him.

Another Fact: Bears can run faster than humans

Getting mauled is not on every persons wish list to do on a daily basis.

Therefore I think the co did the best he could given the circumstances.

I support the people who do the job not the ones who whine about it.

If you want change my suggestion is to go get the university training that is needed to become a conservation officer and start the change yourself rather than whine about some dude protecting himself.

I do have my facts straight. Conservation officers kill more wildlife in our world then they do to help them, FACT. A bears life is worth more than your vehicle or possessions, FACT. Too bad we don't have the same attitude with "DRUNKS and LOSERS" of our society. They attack people and damage property as-well, but are treated like some kind of victim, FACT. A bear is dead for no reason except half ass excuses, FACT. You sticking up for them proves an animals life is worth less than a humans, FACT. We all belong here, small or big, and deserve to live out our natural life without interference, FACT.

Francias the bear was a danger to all in the campground. Go read the Yukon New's article on this bear it was a garbage bear that charged a human when they tried to remove it from the area. They did try tranquilizer darts but they didn't work for one reason or another.

The bear got shot for charging a human being. Not because the conservation officers are lazy or for any other reason.

Get all the facts before you speak.

Gee another dead bear for no reason. You people who shot it are sick murderers. Too lazy to tranquilize it? Nope, too much money probably. That's all our animals are in today's world anyway, a dollar amount. Its easier to just kill it then put some effort and time. Bears are very special animals that live a very long time. Why did you losers snuff his life out? Because he was aggressive and showed his wild instincts? You killed him because he smelt food? Because someones cheap vehicle got damaged? Boo hoo cry me a river. We live in the Wilderness, not downtown Toronto. I'll even bet that the loser who killed the bear is some winner from down south, who moved up here to make some nice coin. You people are a sick joke and I hope that bears spirit comes back to haunt you and your family. RIP bear, one day we will have the last laugh on these excuses for human beings. Conserving what? More like legalized poachers. Because that's all you guys do anyways, and everything is always a nuisance this, and a nuisance that. Sorry but you are the real nuisance, taking these poor animals life's away. Cowards.
