Grief counsellors helping teenagers cope with girl's death
Foul play is not suspected in the death a 15-year-old Whitehorse girl whose body was found in a yard in the Kopper King area early Thursday morning.
Foul play is not suspected in the death a 15-year-old Whitehorse girl whose body was found in a yard in the Kopper King area early Thursday morning.
Yukon coroner Kirsten Macdonald has identified the teenager as Tora-Lee Williams.
Whitehorse RCMP said this morning though foul play is not suspected, they are continuing their investigation into the teen's death.
Police were called to a home in the area at 7:25 a.m. Thursday after a resident of the area discovered the body.
The girl was found to be unresponsive, said Const. Christine Grant.
She said she did not know whether the resident who found her knew the teenager.
Ambulance personnel, along with members of the RCMP Whitehorse detachment and "M” Division major crimes unit, identification services and its police service dog were dispatched to the scene.
The girl was taken to Whitehorse General Hospital. She was unable to be resuscitated and was pronounced dead.
Macdonald said that given the circumstances, an autopsy and toxicology report has been ordered, and will likely be done early next week.
Results are expected a couple of weeks after that.
A grief counsellor has been sent to Porter Creek Secondary School, where the girl was a student.
The counsellor is working with the other counsellors there to offer support to the students and staff, said Department of Education spokesman Chris Madden.
Other schools have also been informed of the death with counselling services offered to them as well, Madden said, noting students from different schools often know one another.
"It's a trying time for us at the school,” PCSS principal Brendan Kelly said this morning as he praised the department for its assistance.
Many – students, their parents and teachers – are feeling a range of emotions as they deal with the death of the young girl, he said, adding the students are resilient.
Both education officials and the coroner's office are extending their condolences to the girl's family.
"Our hearts go out to the family,” Madden said, echoing the sentiments expressed by Macdonald.
