GREEN ROOTS THE KEY – The Green Party’s environmental roots are the main factor that first attracted Lenore Morris to it in 2012.

Green Party candidate returns for a second run

Then there were five.

By Tim Giilck on August 19, 2021

Then there were five.

The Yukon Federal Green Party Association has announced that Lenore Morris will carry its standard for a second time in a federal election.

“We are thrilled to announce our candidate in the 2019 federal election has been confirmed as our candidate to represent the Yukon on September 20, 2021,” a release from the party stated this morning.

Morris talked to the Star about her nomination this morning as she waited to catch a flight to British Columbia.

She was quite forthright about running in this election with the party in a state of disarray after weeks of infighting over the leadership of Annamie Paul.

“It’s impossible to completely ignore it (the party dissension), Morris said. “But the Green Party is a very democratic party, and that’s one of the reasons I support it.

“It’s surprisingly easy to just focus on Yukon issues,” she added. “Yukon is such an interesting riding, particularly in this election.”

Morris said she was watching with interest the situation with the Conservative Party, which dumped Jonas Smith as its candidate late last week.

Smith has been replaced by Barbara Dunlop, a well-known author of romance novels and a former Yukon government employee.

Smith is now running as an independent candidate.

The highest-profile candidate is likely Dr. Brendan Hanley, the Yukon’s chief medical offer of health for the past 12 years. He’s now on a leave of absence while he campaigns.

The NDP has also named its candidate, a political newcomer in Lisa Vollans-Leduc.

There has been no word about a potential People’s Party of Canada candidate.

The Green Party’s environmental roots are the main factor that first attracted Morris to it back in 2012, she said.

“All parties talk about them but only one makes it a priority,” she said.

She said she thinks the party could be poised to make a breakthrough during this election.

“All kinds of people are interested in Green Party issues,” Morris said.

As she got to know the party better, she said, she began to learn of its grassroots democratic style and came to appreciate its values more.

Morris has practised as a lawyer in the Yukon for 22 years, but has history in the Yukon going back more than 40 years, as she went to school in Dawson City.

“Lenore is a long-time Yukoner who lived in the Klondike in her youth and now makes her home in Whitehorse,” a backgrounder said.

“While raising two sons, she returned to academic life to complete her third university degree, in law. Lenore has run her own law practice in Whitehorse since 2006 and looks forward to using her strong analytical skills and gritty determination on behalf of the people of the Yukon as our representative in Ottawa.

“An active member of the Whitehorse community for two decades, Lenore has volunteered for many community organizations,” the backgrounder added.

“As a long-time Green Party member, Lenore lives her passion for active transportation and environmental sustainability; she canoes, hikes, bikes and skis.”

Morris was caught a bit off-guard with last Sunday’s snap election call.

She will delay the start of her campaigning for approximately a week due to her pre-planned trip to British Columbia to sea kayak.

Morris drew 2,201 votes in the October 2019 election.

Three parties now on the left with the Libs as left as any of them. This is the election for the cons to win. 41% of Yukoners voted con in the territorial election and 10,000 voters who did not cast a ballot.(can you blame them?) But the cons will screw it up- Jonas running Ind as spite, ego, blackmail and " I'll show you guys" will put Hanley in by a slim margin. Stupidity usually wins the other guy the seat.

@ Anie... oh if life were only as simple as you try and make it. We all know the liberals pre-announced by spending our money like fools, however many of us thought that as the inevitable fourth wave gained momentum and most people tried to get in a bit of summer holiday time, our selfish prime minister may have had enough good judgement to delay an election call, you know- do the right thing. Once again, sir selfish proved us wrong and will hopefully be tuned up at the polls.

Everyone and their uncle knew this election would be called. We even knew in advance the date of the announcement. But the Green Party still have not released their platform. Perhaps they are preoccupied with trying to turf their leader. It's a good feeling, sometimes, to cast a protest vote, a "that'll teach em" wake up call to the tired established parties. We have to vote, but don't much like any of them. But we have too many important issues challenging our country to throw our vote away on a cannot-win. So don't waste your vote this time, please

Will the Greenies comment on what they think about YEC jamming up the south access and airport areas with a battery plant?
Do they think the 'illuminate'(YDC board) should comment on why they vote when they vote on a rate increase or are they answerable to no one?

Mr. Robbins.. yes, I know.. but she is still running the party and giving the news updates and speeches. The 'leader' is now AnneMarie Paul, who is very quiet and respectfully sits in the background.

Yes, she's a good candidate; it's a shame she's with the Green Party. As Thomas Brewer says, a vote for the GP is a wasted vote.

@ Juniper Jackson: Elizabeth May has not been leader of the Green Party since 2019.

Good choice. It is not about the national party winning, it's about having a voice for protecting the Yukon environment.

Shutting down the environment won't produce jobs.

I'm not sure how this person could get ONE vote, the Greens as a party if elected would have zero status. The Greens to me are the equivalent of the Bloc out of the not so Belle Province, all about them.

A green vote? Not if hell froze over and they sent me ice skates. ALL of the party leaders have a strong smell downwind, and May is just as smelly as the others.

Come on Whitehorse Star - your caption should read "Then there five" not "Then there were four"...

We were all caught off guard with this unnecessary election. Middle of summer, middle of pandemic. Selfish move by liberals. You got my vote for sure.

A vote for Green is a wasted vote. We're going to have to be strategic this time round.

Ah the left - they will fight this one out among the three of them. It will be interesting to see how many disaffected Liberals make a run to the GP.

The highest profile candidate is Hanley ? Say so you. You meant to say, I am sure, the candidate who raked in just a hundred million on a do nothing job that he screwed up in the 3rd wave. That is because he knew he was on his way to hopefully a cushier job where he may get to schmooze with his Liberal buddies in Ottawa.

While you may hold a degree as a doctor - actions speak louder than words. Your actions over the past 1 1/2 years was anything but stellar.

Arguably the best candidate in the last election - BY FAR the best one this time.

More than capable of making intelligent input to any federal climate change
legislation.

Sadly her party's in a mess right now.
