City council is being asked to approve $131,734 in grants recommended by the city’s Recreation Grant Task Force.

The task force met April 6 to consider the spring intake of grant applications. Council is scheduled to vote on the recommendations next Monday.

The recommendations were put before council at its meeting this week.

The grants fall under three categories: recreation grants, parks and recreational facilities and arts and cultural facilities.

Individual grants to 25 organizations range from a high of $12,000 to a low of $800.

Under recreation grants, a total of $68,208 is being recommended by the task force.

It’s recommended, for instance, that the Heart of Riverdale be granted the full $12,000 it asked for to fund its arts camp and youth internship program.

At the low end in that category, the task force is recommending Flatwater North receive a grant of $1,108 for a barbecue and shelter.

Under recreational facilities, the task force is recommending a total of $30,600 be granted to five organizations.

It’s recommending the Friends of Mount Sima receive $10,000 for snowmaking and chair lift maintenance, while $10,000 is being recommended to assist the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club with operational expenses.

The task force is also recommending Special Olympics Yukon receive $800 to cover the cost of electrical work.

Under arts and culture, the task force is recommending a total of $33,925 be granted to six organizations.

The Yukon Theatre for Young People Society is topping the list with a recommendation that it receive $9,000 to help fund its musical Oliver.

At the low end, the task force is recommending the Yukon Conservation Society receive $850 to help fund its Created at the Canyon program.

Can the City still afford these grants with deferred taxes and all that is going on?
