MUCH WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE – When Doug Graham first entered politics, it was the late 1970s, party politics had just been implemented, and the Yukon Party was known as the Yukon Territorial Progressive Conservative Party.

Graham eyes possible return to city politics

The minister of Education may be retiring from territorial politics, but he’s not closing the door on the political realm just yet.

The minister of Education may be retiring from territorial politics, but he’s not closing the door on the political realm just yet.

Doug Graham, who served four terms as a city councillor before being elected to the legislature in 2011, expressed interest in returning to municipal politics in an interview with the Star this morning.

“I haven’t ruled out going back to city council some time in the future,” he said.

“It’s just enjoyable because it’s really close to people, and you see things change right away, where as in territorial government, it takes a long time.”

The next municipal election will take place in late 2018.

The MLA for Porter Creek North announced Wednesday he will not run again in the upcoming territorial election.

“I’ve reached that stage in my life. I actually had retired before I ran five years ago,” he said.

“I worked an extra five years,” he said, adding that it’s time to give a younger person the chance to get into territorial politics.

To be sure, Graham remains faithful to the Yukon Party.

“I’m a Yukon Party guy through and through,” he said. “I’m leaving on good terms.”

He said there is “absolutely no chance” that he would run for the Liberals or NDP this time around.

Before the 2011 election, he had indicated he would seek a Liberal nomination.

Graham concedes the last sitting of the legislative assembly was difficult for him.

There weren’t many questions directed at him and he wasn’t able to participate as much as he would have liked, he said.

But in a way, that’s a good thing.

“We’ve done some great things with education and that’s why we didn’t get many questions,” he said.

Indeed, under Graham, a unit on residential schools and their lasting impacts was introduced to all Yukon high schools in 2015.

“We’ve signed some agreements with First Nations throughout the territory, we’re heading in the right direction with including more First Nation culture and residential school experiences in curriculum,” he said.

“I think that’s really important to the school system; that’s something I’m proud of.”

The minister said his department is working to improve the First Nations culture education, and specifically the language component.

While First Nations language instruction is available in most Yukon schools, students are not graduating from those programs as fluent speakers. This is an area that needs work, said Graham.

Looking back on his last five years in office, Graham said he is most proud of getting action on the continuing care facility in Whistle Bend when he was minister of Health and Social Services.

The 150-bed centre for seniors planned for Whistle Bend has garnered much criticism for its large size, remote location and uncertainty over what it will cost to operate and maintain.

Graham, however, is convinced that once the facility is up and running, Yukoners will be happy to have it.

“The criticism over the location will all go away when they see it,” he predicted.

“It will be the biggest subdivision, and the continuing care facility will be right in the centre of it. People will look at that in 20 years and say, ‘Golly, wasn’t that a great idea?’”

Graham has lived in the Yukon all his life.

He took his first seat in the legislature in 1978 as the Conservative MLA for the old Porter Creek West riding. The Yukon Party used to call itself the Conservative party.

Now, with his last sitting behind him barring an emergency session, Graham said he looks forward to running on the trails, playing hockey in the afternoons, and spending more time with his wife, Mayvor, who is also retired.

As an end note to this chapter of his career, Graham acknowledged the efforts of members of the public service.

“It’s really important that people understand how many good civil servants are working in this territory,” he said.

“And what a great job they do in sometimes difficult circumstances.”

@ Rolf

They built a new high school that is already at capacity and can't host it's own graduation ceremony. It also has a trade wing 500m from the main building that will toughen those kids up that are considering the trades. Wet feet and frost bite are part of the biz.

Also the steel framed windows will generate decades worth of man hours in the form of studies and refitting as a battery of specialists grapple with ongoing condensation and mold issues. (See: Thompson Centre)

Additionally, the inevitable portables that get installed onsite in the next few years will show kids that living in a trailer with a bunch of other people is the future.

Nope. When you retire from politics that's it you don't keep coming back like a Zombie in a bad movie. You've done your damage and leave with that in tact.

yes, go away !!! on Jun 11, 2016 at 12:00 pm

Hasn't he caused enough problems for one lifetime?

Running in any election will result in an embarrassing defeat.

When I sent in my first post, I was particularly vicious about Mr. Graham. Star editors kindly saved me from myself on this one.
Question for "i will vote for you" and "Sandra P." are you really Doug Graham?

Doug Graham and Dave Stockdale were the worst Councillors to ever collect a paycheck from the City of Whitehorse... they were right there through the Buckway years.. does everyone remember Buckway???

The entitled old boys club is alive and well in the likes of Dougie Graham. He sells the image of being a straight shooter but he is anything but. His stint in HSS and Education confirm he was on cruise control his whole term. And keeping Arnold as DM in Education and Meade in HSS simply tells us who was really in control ... not Dougie.

Go away! on Jun 10, 2016 at 12:45 pm

Mr. Graham, you did damage at the City Council when you were there before, and now that the YP ship is sinking you want to go back to the City??? Go away and retire already. Enough is enough.

I hope no one votes for you. This just proves you are self serving. YP boat is sinking so you do this? Embarrassing.

Missed opportunity on Jun 9, 2016 at 11:55 pm

Mr. Graham you had the opportunity to significantly change the Dept. of Education but you simply followed in the footsteps of others so we got more of the same. Nothing signalled that more than your bringing back a retread like the DM Arnold. I like others thought you might actually make changes that were long overdue and yes it is time to retire as you know the Yukon party will not get elected again anyway.

Thank you Minister Graham for your tenure as an upstanding Minister for both HSS and Education. You have always been grounded, had excellent judgement, and supported your staff. Thank you for all you have done for Yukoners. Kudos to you, a job very well done. Enjoy some R & R, it's very well deserved. See you at the Rink!

OMG...I can not believe this blot on the political escutcheon would even consider showing his face in the arena again...YP..lest anyone forget..he was Minister when they cut services in Health..when they cut pioneer grants..I probably have him to thank for having to work at 76 to pay for my medications..it's a popular urban myth to say senior drugs are covered..SOME senior drugs are covered..the so called board is garbage too..

I watched him strutting around at the senior tea today...he was stopping to chat..campaigning?

Just when you thought he had done the right thing, in retiring from public office, he crawls back in somewhere else. Time to retire with some grace and a shred of dignity. Then again, this is the Yukon ....
