Government officials responded to hydrocarbon spill reported Friday at a non-operational processing plant in southeast Yukon.
The spill occurred at EFLO Energy Yukon Ltd.’s plant, about 240 kilometres east of Watson Lake.
After hearing a report on Environment Yukon’s spill hotline, government officials contacted the company.
They issued an environmental protection order – which would require the company to stop and contain the leak by noon Sunday.
Late this morning, Ron Billingham, a spokesperson for the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, could not yet confirm whether the company had met this deadline to contain the fuel overflow.
“(Government officials) were on the ground there yesterday,” Billingham said.
Details from their inspection were scheduled to be released to the media at a news conference later this afternoon.
It is not known at this point what caused the spill nor how much was leaked.
As for the substance itself, Billingham said officials took samples of the hydrocarbon and are awaiting results.
Hydrocarbon, he said, is a generic term used could indicate any fuel “from diesel to gasoline.”
The protection order also requires the company to fence the affected area, proceed with cleanup and remediation as well as ensuring the plant and equipment gets brought back to working order.
