Government and city laud bid committee
The Yukon government and the City of Whitehorse have thanked the 2027 Canada Winter Games bid committee for sharing its proposal to host the 2027 Canada Winter Games (see story, p. 4).
The Yukon government and the City of Whitehorse have thanked the 2027 Canada Winter Games bid committee for sharing its proposal to host the 2027 Canada Winter Games (see story, p. 4).
“The bid committee has put together a proposal that showcases our community spirit, builds on our work towards reconciliation, and highlights Whitehorse and the Yukon,” the two governments said in a statement Thursday.
“As host city, these Games will also create a lasting legacy for our community, including new memories, experiences, and facilities.”
The governments said they will work together to review the proposal in detail and determine the best way forward.
“Congratulations and thank you to the bid committee for their hard work, dedication and commitment.”
Mayor Laura Cabott called the Games “an opportunity to show our support for Canada’s top athletes and put Whitehorse on the national stage.
“This proposal breaks down the economic, community, and social benefits of the Games and why Whitehorse would make a great host city.
“On behalf of residents, I want to thank the bid committee and the chair, Piers McDonald, for all their work, and I look forward to considering this proposal to bring these games to life.”
Community Services Minister Richard Mostyn added, “The vision Piers McDonald and his team are submitting to the Canada Games Council is an exciting one that embraces values the Government of Yukon shares: reconciliation, connection and resilience.
“I’m particularly impressed with its focus on ensuring the Games bring long-term transformative legacies to our territory. I now look forward to the council’s review and to working with the federal government on ensuring we can make this bold vision a reality.”
The two governments have calculated that each Canada Winter Games feature between 16 and 19 sports, 3,600 winter participants, including athletes, coaches and managers, and more than 5,000 volunteers.
“The Canada Winter Games can provide enormous benefits to the host territory or province. They can generate significant economic spending and leave behind important legacies such as affordable housing and sport infrastructure.”

Let's stop this nonsense and waste of our tax dollars.
Let's protest in front of City Hall, GY and Northern Vision D. I want accountability and meaningfull consultation. The Yukon is not Poland in 1939, why are the a few people prevailing over the masses.

I wonder how many of the 5000 volunteers will actually be paid. I have full respect for the actual volunteers that are there on their own dime. I have zero respect for paid YG workers who leave their job to go have fun at the games and receive all the swag and benefits that real volunteers receive. But maybe this will bring the ones out hiding at home back into society.

Consultation
kŏn″səl-tā′shən
noun
The act or process of consulting. (Listening to what others want)
A conference at which advice is given or views are exchanged. (Dialog rather than directives)
A meeting between physicians to discuss the diagnosis or treatment of a case. (If you don't stop spending, you'll never get better)
I am growing weary of these political dictators.

Maybe it's time for Ted Laking to be all over COW chucking in $3 mill as their share. Long track speed skaters being flown on a charter to Fort St. John & back - wow.
Other article says construction of new arena in Takhini would need to be started next year when average folk can't find a contractor of any type for love or money. So glad Cabott is congratulating them on behalf of residents when most are freaking out at this idea.

Where's the money coming from. How about housing, land development, streets, Riverdale bridge, on and on?

"NO" to this unnecessarily extravagant two-week sports party to mainly benefit the hospitality and junk-food businesses.
We don't need another Sucking Hole Money Pit like the last games made. We're still propping-up that "legacy" with our tax increases.
We have far more important needs to spend our money on.
This Mayor&Council should focus on the job they were elected for, not self-aggrandizement trying to create lofty legacies.

TNK, they are going ahead with the games, because Whitehorse was the only place stupid enough to commit that kind of money on a non essential event while everyone is trying to get back to financial and personal balance. (Just a note about Trudeau here.. our food banks are almost overwhelmed with the increase in need and usage..Trudeau spent $12,000, yes. twelve thousand dollars, on his grocery bill for the month of August. That is his personal/family account. Tax payer dollars.)
With the exception of a few Con's, the City council is mostly Liberal...spend, spend, spend, spend, then try to tax your way out of the hole. A huge mess is coming our way.

Geeze I sure hope this isn't confirmed that they are going ahead with this bs proposal since it seems many residents haven't heard about it till now and we should have a say if the city gets to waste millions of dollars on crap. Can certainly say majority of comments on the other article are not in support of it so where is the council meeting happening where we get to say our opinion that it's an absurd proposal and a waste of 175 million dollars 😡
