As the Yukon marks its 125th year since joining Confederation, the government’s longstanding Yukon Gold Explorer’s Passport contest has gone digital for 2023.

Highlighting the many cultural centres, museums and other attractions throughout the Yukon, participants are encouraged to visit any (or all) of the 38 featured sites and take a photo of the contest poster on display at each location.

Using the QR code on the poster, each photo can then be submitted as an entry for a chance to win three top prizes of Klondike placer gold and other items. Entries can be submitted until Aug. 31, with prizes awarded in September.

“Our government is thrilled to offer the beloved Explorer’s Passport contest in a new, user-friendly digital format,” Tourism and Culture Minister John Streicker said Monday.

“This exciting contest provides an extra incentive to explore our extraordinary territory, with its remarkable museums, captivating First Nation cultural centers, informative Visitor Centres, and other attractions that showcase the richness of the Yukon.

“This new digital format arrives perfectly timed to commemorate the Yukon’s 125th anniversary!” the minister said.

The anniversary is June 13.

Launched in 1986, the Yukon Gold Explorer’s Passport Contest promotes a variety of heritage attractions throughout the Yukon, including cultural centres, museums, and Parks Canada and Klondike Visitors Association attractions.

What celebrations if any will be commemorated for the Yukon Field Force which had gone north in 1898 to the Klondyke Gold Rush to aid the North West Mounted Police.
