All About Dogs will be all about reopening next Tuesday.

That's when the doors of Robbie Benoit's dog grooming business will swing open again with groomer Anne Pittens at the helm.

'I think she's a Godsend,' Benoit said in an interview from Vancouver this morning.

Earlier this year, Benoit closed up shop temporarily after being diagnosed with cancer.

He had spent weeks trying to find another groomer to take over the business while he planned to focus on getting better. Unable to find anyone, he closed up shop, planning to return to business when he was better.

Meanwhile, Pittens found herself in a situation common to many Yukoners. Having visited the territory during the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous festival in February, Pittens went back home to Brantford, Ont., and packed her bags to move up to the territory for the summer.

Pittens said it was her writing and the history of the territory that made her want to spend more time here.

She planned to spend the summer waitressing. However, when she mentioned to a few people she had been a dog groomer before coming to the territory, they told her about Benoit and suggested she look into reopening All About Dogs.

'I'm psyched,' Pittens said, noting Benoit has been great in permitting her to 'move right in.'

It was a friend of Benoit's who initially contacted him in Vancouver about the possibility of Pittens reopening the shop. From there, the two dog groomers have been in contact to get All About Dogs operating again.

Benoit said it came as a total surprise when he found out there was someone who wanted the job.

'She's certainly qualified,' he said.

Pittens got her start when she was running sled dogs in northern Ontario.

With 16 dogs to look after, she had the local dog groomer teach her how to properly groom the animals. Eventually, she bought that business, remaining there for six years before moving to Brantford, where she continued dog grooming.

In total, she's been in the business for about a decade.

In the Yukon, Pittens said, she'll be doing the best she can to operate the shop in the same fashion as Benoit. No appointments will be necessary.

For the first bit, it will be a cash-only payment system because the credit card machines still have to be in place, she said.

The reopening, said Benoit, will mean his clients have a dog groomer to go to until he gets back to the territory.

Pittens said she'll likely assess how things are going after a few months. Benoit's hopeful the new addition to All About Dogs may mean customers have two dog groomers they can go to at All About Dogs after he's back to work.

It could also mean extended hours at the shop if there are two groomers working there after a few months.

For now though, Benoit is working on getting better. Currently in Vancouver for chemotherapy and radiation therapy, he'll be back in Whitehorse at the end of the month, returning to Vancouver for treatment in mid-May.

He said his most recent session of treatment on Wednesday went fairly well.

All About Dogs on Fourth Avenue will reopen on Tuesday.

The shop's hours will be from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday with the exception of Thursday, when it will open at 1 p.m.
