Yukoners could be rolling up their sleeves to receive a COVID-19 vaccine as early as January.
Yukoners could be rolling up their sleeves to receive a COVID-19 vaccine as early as January.
On Thursday afternoon, territorial government officials announced a plan to receive the Moderna vaccine in quantities great enough to immunize nearly every Yukon adult who is willing to accept it.
The plan is contingent on the vaccine receiving final approval from Health Canada officials, so that deadline could be somewhat in flux.
The announcement came from Premier Sandy Silver, Health and Social Services Minister Pauline Frost and Dr. Brendan Hanley, the chief medical officer of health, during a media conference.
The government plans to distribute the vaccine using its established flu vaccine model as a template.
Up to 1,000 vaccinations a day would be possible under the plan. Mobile clinics would be set up to roam the more rural and remote communities.
“It’s an extraordinary day for our country and for the Yukon,” Hanley said.
He said he was excited for the chance to work with the Moderna vaccine, which doesn’t have the logistical difficulties of the already-approved Pfizer vaccine, which requires ultra-cold temperatures of up to -80 C.
The initial target is to have enough vaccine doses to immunize 75 per cent of adults in the territory. That should be sufficient for initial needs, and more will be ordered as necessary.
That 75 per cent figure will also be enough to begin creating herd immunity, Hanley said.
Options are being prepared in the event the Moderna vaccine doesn’t receive final approval in the expected time frame of the next few weeks, Hanley said. That could include other vaccines coming on the market.
“That doesn’t affect our plan for distribution, though,” he explained. “The journey beings today.”
Silver said “it’s an extremely important day. But this is a marathon, not a sprint. The finish line may be in sight, but we have to keep racing.”
Both he and Hanley warned against relaxing the procedures put in place to help control the spread of the virus.
The vaccine still has to get here, and it will require two doses. That means it could take months for the benefits to ripple through the population.
The control measures currently in place must continue until then, Silver said.
“We need to stay focused, and practise the Safe Six Plus One and use our masks.”
It remains to be seen how well the public will embrace the vaccine as well. Any reluctance to accept the shots could slow the herd immunity effect, and it’s impossible to predict ahead of time.
“But every adult who wants it can be vaccinated in the New Year,” Silver said.
The shots will be free to recipients, with the federal government covering the costs across the country.
“Over the course of the pandemic, Yukoners have come together to protect our territory from COVID-19,” Frost said.
“Now, it’s very important that Yukoners choose to vaccinate. It’s the best thing we can do to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Over time, widespread immunization will allow us to return to a life without COVID-19 restrictions.”
No COVID-19 vaccines for children have been approved. Hanley said Moderna is beginning some clinical trials with people under 18.
The initial trials of the vaccine showed an effectiveness rate of approximately 94 per cent, Hanley said.
Of the small number of participants who did become infected with the virus, none developed a severe version of the disease.
Both the Northwest Territories and Nunavut will also be able to access the Moderna vaccine.

Don't you hate it when people are too stuck on themselves to even read facts from people who they consider to be wrong, because they don't agree with them?
Well, Anie, to use your own words, your own post is, 'simply not true' and therefore your post, 'is just not worth reading'.
For someone so condescending you'd think you would have bothered to do a 'simple google' of statistics Canada to get the facts. Looks like you are allergic to facts you don't like to hear. Too bad you 'stopped reading', you would have learned something that was the truth.
Here darling, from Statistics Canada, whether you find it 'simply not true' or not. And the facts for October are in now as well, and deaths compared to last year have dropped even more.
"There were more than 7,500 excess deaths across Canada from March to the start of June 2020, which aligns closely with the 8,345 deaths caused by COVID-19 over that same period. By July, the weekly number of deaths was within the range of what would be expected had there been no pandemic. At the national level, no excess mortality was observed through to the end of September. British Columbia was the only province to record consecutive weeks of excess deaths in August and September, which may reflect increases in the number of deaths due to accidental overdoses."

If the government's plan was to prolong their unwarranted and unprecedented authoritarian control indefinitely, then they would continue to impose and promote ineffective and contradictory policies and mandates, while knowing fully well that it would do nothing except slow the inexorable spread of Covid until herd immunity is achieved like it does every year with seasonal influenza.
If government paychecks were cut in half until the pandemic was over, then the politicians would declare it's over before the Holidays.

“Review of the Emerging Evidence Demonstrating the Efficiency of Ivermectin in the Prophylaxis and Treatment of COVID-19” by Front Line Covid-19 Critical Care Alliance.
Ivermectin is a widely available drug with anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-parasitic properties. It was developed in the 1970s. Why isn’t mainstream media mentioning Ivermectin for treating Covid-19? Because it’s inexpensive, and there’s no profit for big pharma in it?

To Anie: fact is several groups have compiled charts of deaths statistics over several years, adjusted for the same number of months and rate of population. These charts show that in 2020 there were less deaths than in 2019.
For example, see the December 2020 report entitled “Flying Blind, Governments’ hasty decision to lockdown Canadians while damaging public health and the economy”, by the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, based in Calgary, Alberta.
See chart on page 41: https://www.jccf.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/2020-12-03-Flying-Blind.pdf
The mainstream media’s hysterical daily reports of ‘covid’ deaths and new cases has manipulated us into believing that there are many more deaths than usual due to covid, but that’s simply not the case upon examination. Many (if not most) of those deaths labelled ‘covid’ deaths are in fact elderly people with other pre-existing conditions who simply tested positive for covid-19. These deaths get automatically labelled as ‘covid’ deaths, although the other conditions actually caused the death. This practice is a misrepresentation of reality, but it’s being done all over. So wrong.

Clint,
Heart disease and Covid-19 can't really be compared in this context. Why? Because heart disease isn't contagious, while Covid-19 is contagious. People with heart disease aren't forced to exercise and eat healthy because their choosing to not exercise and eat healthy won't affect anyone but themselves. People with Covid-19 who don't wear masks could result in other people dying.

This vaccine is mRNA based not traditional cultures, i.e. live-attenuated vaccine, inactivated vaccine, subunit, recombinant, polysaccharide or toxoid vaccine.
The mRNA uses your body to make the viral protein inside the muscle cells. The mRNA codes only for the critical fragment of the viral protein allowing the immune system to have a preview of the what the real virus looks like without causing the disease. Thus allowing the immune system to get ready for the real disease. Sort of a practice run.
Up 25 Down 12
JustSayin' on Dec 14, 2020 at 11:29 am
@Clint
The reason this vaccine could be developed so quickly in comparison to other vaccines is that it is mRNA based versus the typical culture and inject, so culture turnaround time was far faster. As well, numerous companies, governments, individuals contributed to the development of the vaccine. For example, Dolly Parton contributed over a million dollars for the development of this vaccine. The Canadian government paid in advance for doses of vaccine from seven (7) different companies, you know, playing the lottery. mRNA is an amazing beast and could change the world of pharmacology, knowing that mRNA could force our body to degrade foreign receptors can lead to treatment of drug addictions, perhaps reduce the need for pain medication. Is it fool -proof? No nothing is, you can buy brand-new car that was built on a Monday and have problems with the entirety of it.
I think the question arises, is this a form of gene therapy and if so, where will it lead?
Should the government have shut-down the Yukon? I agree, no, but honestly the Liberals have run away with the EMA and done what they please. They have infringed upon charter rights by having preferential hiring practices and ensuring specific demographics are discriminated against, based solely on the phenotypic aspect of their genetics, which they had no control over. The government has created a massive issue and continues to and has no idea the pending legalities headed their way.

Two simple facts should suffice to bring the science on the vaccine into question. The first is that the average amount of time it takes for a vaccine to be developed is reported to be 10.7 YEARS. So seven MONTHS might give one pause, hmm? The second fact is that the common flu vaccines we have been receiving each fall are approximately only 40 to 65 percent effective so the recent claims of 95 percent strain credulity, do they not?
But money wouldn’t have anything to do with any of this would it?

I get that they want to vaccinate those most vulnerable first, (seniors and health care workers) but what about all of the students going to elementary and high school? They get COVID too. They will not be vaccinated. They have not tested the vaccine on those 18 and under. Response I got was: 'It really doesn't affect young people (ie: students) like it affects adults.' Then why are students in Yukon schools required to wear masks on buses, in classes if they can't be a meter apart and so on? If the risk doesn't affect them so much, then why make them mask up at all if you aren't going to vaccinate them?

Why 75 percent? 70 percent is the figure I've heard most often used, and even 60 percent has been said to be effective. There was a doctor on the radio last week saying if a vaccine that was 50 percent effective had been available in September, we'd be better off now. While he didn't suggest how high a percentage would have to use it, that was an interesting take on what a difference any vaccine can make.
This needs to be discussed. I don't know what the uptake is for the flu vaccine, but I don't think it's 75 percent. And their "experience" with distributing the flu vaccine is the basis for their confidence in their ability to get this one done.
This isn't an anti-vaccine thing, and I fully intend to get it. I just think with the territory, or indeed the whole country, never implementing mass vaccination on this scale before, we don't need overly ambitious targets. Why? Because not meeting it will feed on the tendency of people to go after each other, which is already starting right here in these comments. The government can count on not having to explain themselves, because people will just police each other. More than 1100 complaints received about people's behaviour were submitted, with only a handful of them qualifying for fines. If they start believing that "not enough" people are getting vaccinated, according to a target that doesn't have to be there, that's not an atmosphere I'm looking forward to.
Follow science, sure. But where's the science that says 75 percent have to be vaccinated, and why that figure, and not the others not aiming so high? And if we don't reach it, what then? That's the main question. Another three months under emergency measures? Then another three? More indefinite periods living in this very odd way, and a population that grows increasingly paranoid about each other? I don't care how much of a gloss people put on it, this is not bringing out the best in us. The opposition needs to question this vigorously and Sandy Silver and Hanley owe us an explanation and to quit counting on the little Gestapo citizens they've been encouraging for almost a year now.

We are only getting a maximum of 6 million doses across Canada, by the end of March 2021, enough for 3 million of 40 million Canadians to be immunized. So don't kid yourself that anything is going to change in terms of the government's total control of your life to end soon.
There have been less deaths in Canada this fall than there were in the fall of 2019, despite this supposed 'pandemic'. 98% of deaths from covid are people over 60, and the vast majority of those are people over 80. People over 80 are generally at the end of their natural life span, and regularly die of the flu, colds, broken hips, heart disease, cancer, dementia, etc. Nobody talks about that, only 'covid! covid!' They don't really die of a broken hip or a cold, they die of old age. When you need nursing care to stay alive, there's a good chance that the next big thing is going to take you out. That is reality for all of us, we are all going to get there. Stop asking today's young people to have their lives and the structure of our society severely damaged over a flu bug that is somewhat more deadly than pneumonia or the seasonal flu, to people already in the zone where they are vulnerable to any number of things.
This whole year long reaction has been utter nonsense. Our hospital in Whitehorse has at times been more empty than ever before as people were not allowed in for treatment / surgery, in case somebody got covid and went to the hospital. 58 cases, three active, 1 dead, and 54 fully recovered. I do not think more than 5 of those cases even bothered going to the hosptial. They weren't sick enough!
Wake up and stop going along with all of this without questioning it. There's no vaccine that's going to put everything back to normal by spring. We just all have to grow up and address the real risks to the people who are vulnerable, while letting others get back to their lives.
I would say that all the money wasted, the hundreds of billions, could have been well spent in creating more hospital / health care redundancy so we do have room for spikes in patients. The government has shown zero interest in dealing with the fundamental cause of these viruses, which is factory farming and poaching, mass crowding and suffering of animals. Nobody is talking about that. Oh, but we care soooo much about people's health, right?
Nobody is suggesting that people take this time to get some excess fat off their bodies, or to get their diabetes under control. But diabetes and obesity are big risk factors. No one is taking coke and pepsi off the shelves, but we can't go for Christmas dinner or do any number of things. Kids can still eat fruit loops and coco puffs.
This is such a fricking FARCE! I am very suspicious of what is going on.

Keep in mind that FOX news, the trumptard network, is only on the air due to its major advertiser being the pharmaceutical companies (ask your doctor before taking this medication)
In addition, the American way you seem to despise is now responsible for the vaccines which will now allegedly save us from covid. How was this possible? Well, by a 3 billion dollar gift to the pharmaceutical companies by none other than...the Trump Administration! It’s known as Operation Warp Speed. Now I do NOT need to be a scientist (I’m not, by the way. Just a thinking human) to realize that any medical treatment made in warp speed is best avoided until further research and testing has been completed.
The greater good will be better served by long term clinical and real world analysis. Will one be able to petition Moderna for expenses if an adverse reaction occurs and one requires hospital care, or will one have to pay out of pocket? Perhaps one won’t be treated for an adverse reaction at all, as all the hospital space is to be freed up for covid patients......

Heart diseases kill 17 million people annually. We know that diet and exercise can vastly reduce the incidence of disease. We also know that over exertion often causes cardiac arrest. With this knowledge in hand, governments have not compelled physical exercise onto their citizens. There is no law forcing people to eat healthy food. Nor has their been a government mandated cap on maximum heart rates for individuals.
Cancer kills 9.5-10 million people globally every yr while the Yukon government and its cohorts globally share in the spoils with tobacco and drug companies who produce the most lethal killers in society. The courts and politicians have never had the will or ability to "ban" tobacco.
Car crashes kill as many people annually as Covid has this yr while local and global governments invest in the repair and construction of more roads. Automakers continue to develop safer and more efficient cars. Society has never been convinced of our need to "lockdown" highways or car factories until we eradicate automobile deaths.
The Canadian Patient Safety Institute research suggests that medical error kills approximately 28,000 each year, which is more than double the amount of Canadian Covid deaths. There is no law "distancing" people from their doctors.
Neither the article or the comments make light of the fact that Covid has contributed to 1 death in the Yukon. It is rarely reported that globally, 1.4% of cases have resulted in death. Covid is rarely put into context by comparing it to the deadly killers we are accustomed to and have incorporated into our lifestyle. Instead, it is sensationalized to be an overly zealous, blood thirsty killer.
There is plenty of credible evidence that suggests the efforts and resources deployed against this virus are vastly disproportionate to the damages it has and is causing.
When projected out, it is hard to quantify the compound and future impact of canceled surgeries, delayed diagnoses, canceled regular care that can be attributed to the response measures to the virus. The same can be said for the economic fallout. But we certainly will not escape these inevitabilities.
The news of the vaccine and its early performance in trials are encouraging and bring welcome relief to the hypertense citizens of the world. The reality is that drug companies and scientists have built this vaccine in a fraction of the time of previous medicines, with no window for analyzing and evaluating long term effects. The industry and institutions that are developing, producing, promoting these vaccines are parts of the body that have medically prescribed cocaine, valium, and xanax as antidepressants, thalidomide for morning sickness, percocets and oxycontin for pain. This point is not an attack on the people who work in these fields. It's a reminder that the drug makers, doctors, researchers, public health officials, and even politicians are all human, and very capable of getting it wrong.
I would like for anyone reading this to give serious thought to points raised, and welcome opposing viewpoints or correction. The points contained in this letter are rarely raised in our public spaces, or by our public faces. These need to be given their due consideration when forming policy.
Thank you for reading my long winded thought.

The citizen tax payer via the government. As noted above the WHO is mostly funded by Pharmaceutical companies. They were caught in 2009 by the EU attempting to create a false pandemic but not before billions of vaccines were bought by governments. They appear to have pulled it off this time. Moderna also as noted is pushing a new untested vaccine; mRNA which puts new code in your genetic response... Genetically modifying the human client. What could possibly go wrong? No new normal without a vaccine is a narrative pushed by the very people who will benefit the most.... those Pharmaceutical companies. Do your own research, the government is just following the Pied Pipper.

All you people who are saying that you won't take the covid shot should have to pay out of your own pocket if you get sick and need hospital care. Why should we have to pay for your recklessness ???!@#@>. Since when do we all get to have cake and eat it to? You all sound like a bunch of toddlers having a tantrum," Wah, I don't want to wear a mask, Wah, I don't want a shot, Wah, no one can tell me what to do". We have law and order in this society because we ALL do things for the greater good, it's called being civilized! If you want the American way then maybe YOU should pack up and move there! Keep your ideas to yourself because the rest of us THINKING humans don't care to hear your rhetoric!!!

Pharmaceutical companies do not have any liability... billions of dollars are paid out yearly for people adversely affected by vaccines.. paid by citizen taxes. This has been a gigantic cash cow fraud by these companies who are the major donors for the WHO. As noted in 2009 the EU investigated the WHO for pushing a fake pandemic but not before billion of doses were purchased by governments... They appear to have got away with it this year... Also as noted the Moderna mRNA vaccine is an untested technology which manipulates ones RNA. I would not advise ANYONE to take it... rushed. Also the vast majority of people who have Covid are asymptomatic which means they have what is called T-cell immunity from previous contact with other Coronavirus ... Natural herd immunity. The No back to normal without a vaccine is a diabolical fraud.

Note the tone of coercion, when Sandy Silver says ‘we’ll only return to a life without COVID-19 restrictions until 75% of Yukoners get the vaccine…’ This isn’t free choice, this is coercion, and this is particularly wrong in the context of a rushed vaccine. It normally takes years to develop a safe vaccine. And it’s also especially wrong with regard to covid-19 which has only mild symptoms for the majority of people, and still we have been forced into unprecedented lockdowns which are tanking the economy. We have good reasons to mistrust rushed vaccines, and to wonder about the real agenda here.
There are precedents of vaccine fiasco. For example in 2009 the WHO declared a swine flu (H1N1) pandemic and the rushed vaccine caused hundreds of cases of permanent brain damage among Europeans. In the end there were much fewer H1N1 cases than projected, and governments ended up with vast stockpiles of unused vaccines, wasting millions of dollars of taxpayers’ money.
Look up the article entitled “Why EU investigated WHO for fake pandemic”, by Christina Lin about the 2009 H1N1 vaccine fiasco, which details the machinations between the WHO and big pharma.

... and by the time the vaccine gets here, the covid virus will have mutated, perhaps to the extent that the vaccine won't be effective. Same for flu shots, that's why a lot of the time they're not effective.
I never had a flu shot and I haven't had the flu for decades anyway. The best approach is to boost our immune system: healthy diet, Vitamin D and C, Zinc supplements, daily walks in sunshine and fresh air, plenty of rest, avoid stress, cultivate a positive mindset and kindness. It really works.

Let’s see real leadership. Let’s get Dr Handley and Sandy Silverman to walk the walk after all the talking the talk. People are sceptical about a rushed out vaccine you are pushing. Time to man up. You two get the vaccine first. Make a press conference out of it if that’s what you two are looking for.

List the ingredients? Why? Are you a scientist? You think you are smart enough to understand what goes into making a vaccine? let me be the first to tell you, you are NOT, repeating the nonsense you read on the internet does not make you informed!!! it makes you a Fox news, Trumptard wannabe!!@#?!!

Masks don't work to stop Covid, why should a vaccine be any better? "Flu shots" never stopped the flu did they? All we're getting is more government placebo gaslighting that only the sheeple are believing.
The data demonstrates very clearly that Americans have overwhelmingly exceeded the masking compliance percentages needed to supposedly “flatten the curve” and reduce transmission of the virus. The problem, of course, is that the models have not matched reality. Americans are wearing masks, but the hypothesis behind universal masking has not worked to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Americans have adopted the recommendations of the “public health experts,” but the “public health experts” have failed to follow the science, which now shows that masks are useless when it comes to stopping the spread of COVID-19. Now we’re left with an overwhelming majority of Americans wearing masks for no science-based reason whatsoever.

It is at least worth noting that Moderna has had no products to date that have successfully passed regulator scrutiny. That the company’s founder severed ties with the organization in 2014. Finally, that this technology of mRNA has never been used on humans outside of testing and that it is intended to fundamentally alter the actions within the basic building blocks within us. Children and those with strong allergic reactions are being excluded in most jurisdictions.
So it could all work out great, or the same pressures on publicly traded companies that caused Volkswagen to fake their diesel emissions or Boeing to rush the 737 Max might win the day. And we know how that worked out for at least two plane loads of people. I think folks should have access to information that is a bit more substantive than ‘trust us, we know as little as you do about this’.

These vaccines haven't even been tested for transmission reduction, hospitalization rates and death rates. They've only been tested for efficacy of symptom reduction. Pfizer's CEO and the FDA said a few days ago the effect on transmission is still unknown with the Pfizer vaccine. Likewise, Moderna's chief doctor said flat out their vaccine may not prevent transmission.
Misleading the public about the nature of these vaccines and hanging the albatrosses of "herd immunity" and "protecting our loved ones" around our necks is a shameful display by Hanley and Silver. Absolutely disgusting.

But, I have to give the Yukon Libs credit this time. I can imagine they worked hard to get to this point. Just hope it's successful. Be nice to get back to a normal life. I'm still dreaming of the good old days back in 2019.

Funny cause an older poll suggested that 72% would take the vaccine, now that number has plummeted to 52%.. what does that say? It says that Canadians no longer fear Covid or believe the government!
List the ingredients publicly! Then let's go through them together.
