A BUSY PLACE – The drive-through COVID-19 testing site on Waterfront Place is seen Tuesday evening. Shown above are Maricor Fiendell, Jessica McMurphy and Peter Mostyn, left-right. Staff have been testing visitors from 6:30 until 9:30 evenings, and have been quite busy. Appointments are necessary to visit the site, which opened last Friday evening. Meanwhile, 900 Yukoners have received their first vaccine doses in the past week, health data report.
The importance of Yukoners getting vaccinated was emphasized over and over again in the weekly COVID-19 update this morning.
The importance of Yukoners getting vaccinated was emphasized over and over again in the weekly COVID-19 update this morning.
Dr. Brendan Hanley, the chief medical officer of health, emphasized the importance of being vaccinated, as did Premier Sandy Silver snd Kwanlin Dun First Nation Chief Doris Bill.
“Getting vaccinated is the best you can do to protect yourself, your friends and your neighbours,” Silver said during the briefing.
The premier noted that Yukoners are in an outbreak, and have seen more cases of COVID in the last 14 days than there were in the last 14 months.
Bill said the only way to help the current situation is by everybody working together.
“All of us as Yukoners can do our part and take simple steps,” she said. “Number one: get vaccinated.”
Bill said it’s the best way to protect yourself, your friends and your community.
Practising the Safe 6 plus one must be maintained, said the chief.
She said this is not the time to invite people to your house, nor is it the time for house parties and gatherings.
It is time to be kind to one another, as many people are going through difficult times, she said, adding it’s important to be supportive and lift each other up.
Hanley noted there have been 144 new COVID infections since June 1, and he expects to see more as a result of the outbreak.
“We need to take an aggressive approach to find COVID,” he added.
It’s like the catalyst for the outbreak began in mid-May. Officials are not sure of the source but it may be related to travel, he said.
“I would be very surprised if we find the source,” he said.
The are currently 103 active cases, he added.
Three of the cases ended up in the hospital, and three are still there, with one in intensive care. Two cases have been medivaced south.
Of the 144 cases, 122 were unvaccinated, Hanley said.
He said 12 were fully vaccinated and showed mild reactions to the virus while one, an elderly person, displayed a more serious reaction.
There were eight new cases in the territory from Monday at noon to Tuesday afternoon, seven of which were in Whitehorse in one in a rural community, according to Tuesday’s daily update.
There was a total of 220 cases as of yesterday, with most recovered.
He said more than 500 people are in self-isolation.
Hanley said self-isolation must be carrried out properly, which means people who self-isolate must not share any space with family members or whomever. You must not breathe the same air, he added.
“As long as we have fuel available, COVID will burn,” he said.
Hanley said health professionals are seeing an increase in demand for the vaccinations, with 900 Yukoners being vaccinated in the last week alone.
To date, 72 per cent of adult Yukoners have been vaccinated, but 72 per cent is not enough, he said.
The Yukon needs to get up over 80 per cent, he said.
Despite the recent outbreak, Hanley said the Yukon will not be returning to a lockdown or more restrictions.
Practising the Safe six plus one will help stem the spread if the virus, he said.
Hanley said lockdowns have their own negative impact, and can create issues of mental health wellness that cannot be taken lightly, particularly now that summer has arrived.
It’s important that kids get to go to their summer camp, to get outside, to play with other kids, he said.
Hanley said he’s been working with camp co-ordinators to establish operational guidelines for the camps.
Our situation cannot be reliant on lockdowns and further restrictions, he said.
Hanley said the COVID-19 team has been doing a heroic job in the fight against the pandemic.
Among their tasks is contact tracing and contacting people who have been exposed to somebody who’s been infected, though they don’t disclose the identity of the infected individual, he explained.
When travelling in the Yukon, do it respectfully and follow the safey guidelines, said the premier.
He said municipal leaders and First Nation chiefs have been sharing information.
Hanley said they are right now in discussions with community leaders to see if there is a desire to lift the policy of not identifying communities which have new cases of COVID.
The recent outbreak has affected communities across the territory, he said.
Chief Bill said she believes more information helps to create awareness in the community and people become more vigilant.
Now that people know COVID-19 is a real threat, they are taking it more seriously, she said.

Oya and Rick S - not sure where you're looking, but cases have climbed by 15% in the US this week over last. And deaths sadly, have gone from declining to 0% change - creeping back towards 400 per day.
And @we get it - great idea to have 2 separate updates for the vaccinated/unvaccinated! Although I'd miss some of the wacky comments from the usual suspects. For the life of me I can't figure out why some people keep tuning in, unless it's the only platform that will take their comments.

@ radio... hmmm, you don't give much thought to your comments do you. Comparing a hot oven to this scamdemic is hilarious. Touch a hot oven you get burned 100%- covid... well you look at the stats.

June you need a hobby. Seriously.
What do the voices in your head tell you about Hanley’s motivation?
Instilling fear? They only one in fear seems to be you. I wear oven mitts taking a hot lasagna out of the oven not because I’m afraid of oven but because I’m not an idiot. Even though my family and I are all doubled vaxxed I wear a mask to protect myself and others. I don’t spend my days bitching on the internet.
Please tell us, what exactly is Hanleys motivation here?
I’ll wait.

We're not supposed to breathe the same air or share any space with family when self-isolating? Is this new?
I had to go outside in March 2021; I had to isolate when I came back even though I had had both shots at that time. We followed the guidelines of THAT day that were posted on YG's Covid webpage which said we shouldn't use the same bathroom (if possible), shouldn't share cutlery, etc.
The guideline at that time said it was no problem to isolate in your own house with your own family members who could still go out, go to work, go shopping. (Honestly, I never did get that part of the guideline.... how can your roommates still be permitted to go out and about if even one person is required to isolate considering it's an air borne virus?) There was NO rule or recommendation at that time not to breathe the same air as your family members!!!
I guess the message is: One needs to constantly be vigilant to this government's flip-flopping and changing of the goalposts. Before, we needed to reach 75%, now it's 80%. Before, we could breathe. Now we can't. The fear was overrunning the medical system and the hospital. Well, that isn't happening.... so wtf?
No return to the previous restrictions (thank goodness for that!), so why are we still in a state of emergency? Can we not look to the US (just this once) to see how they have opened up and how their death rates continue to fall?

I spoke with three gentlemen from Vancouver this morning who recently drove the Alcan to Whitehorse for a "getaway". I asked how the screening was to enter the territory. They informed they didn't speak with anybody about any COVID matters nor did they see anybody or anyplace promoting anything to do with COVID security. Officials seem to be baffled to how these infections are being introduced to the territory. Perhaps they should monitor the security systems they put into place?

KC: "a risk that is now drastically reduced.
"Doris Bill made it sound like it was March 2020 all over again." There was no COVID in Kwanlin Dun in March 2020! What are you really saying about First Nations communities and the current outbreaks? Graduation ceremonies sparked the current outbreak; "calls to cancel summer camps. I think is a mistake." "misperceive the risk." You mean like like long term effects on the brain.? You will hear more about vaccinated people getting COVID. And there are people out there who get it and do not report or get tested. Then there are the people who got vaccinated and think its OK to walk around without a mask, and come into town from COVID infected communities. Denial of the real facts of COVID transmissibility, and long term effects is not a sign of intelligence, but stupidity.

@ give it up. Seems to me the vaccinated crew are the ones we should fear as most of them are going around with I’m bullet proof attitude. Those without vax are more cautious and will show symptoms when/if while they build up natural immunity when fighting off COVID. Ironically we should be thanking those who choose to build natural immunity. While vaccinated crew may appear to be helping current variants, they will likely be more susceptible to new variants and require more experimental boosters.
Remember the fear- overwhelmed health care- that’s why most of your freedoms were taken away, well there are more cases than ever now and no increase in hospitalization. You don’t have to think too long or too hard about all this.

So, now it's "over 80%" needed.
Moving goalposts much?

give it up already on Jun 24, 2021 at 12:47 pm
Over 80% of eligible Yukoners have had at least one shot. 85% of the new cases are unvaccinated Yukoners. So 20% of the people have 85% of the cases, which means you are 25x more likely to get covid if you have no shots, and if you do get it, it's going to be more serious than you would have otherwise experienced had you been vaccinated.
Knowing this, if people still decide it's not a good idea, I do not think that any amount of telling them to go get their vaccine is going to work. Give it up. If they get sick, that's their choice. Yes, they are a vector walking around potentially spreading it to those few vaccinated people who are still vulnerable, but at least those people will have a much less serious case than they otherwise would have.

Everyone who is saying this outbreak is so bad and freaking out saying we should lock out borders again. Do the math, currently we have about 100 cases... that means 0.25% have covid yes you heard that right 0.25%... absolutely nothing. So calm down, if you are scared go inside your closet and don’t come out.

What's that? Another 90 minute lecture on the importance of getting vaccinated? Perfect.
Can the 80% of Yukon who has their vaccines PLEASE get a separate press conference? We want to know what is happening, and could be spared the (frankly patronizing) weekly lecture.
If I wanted a sermon on things I already believed in, I'd go back to church.

80% is just a number pulled out of thin air with no scientific basis. Not to mention there could be a significant portion of the remaining 28% that already have natural immunity after infection, which actual science shows offers durable, long-lasting protection. Further to this point, there's no science showing benefit to vaccination after infection, while there is science showing potential complications to vaccination after infection. It's irresponsible of Hanley not to mention this; he's putting peoples' health at risk.
Finally, let's not forget almost the entire United States is open without restrictions. Many of the states have far lower vaccination rates than us, they also have the variants, and they're doing just fine.

This all started with fear of overwhelming our hospitals. Now we have unprecedented number of covid positive yet few hospitalizations. Makes you wonder no? Better get a vaccine so someone gets a big bonus check for success I guess. Like I said before, my biggest fear is vaccinated super heroes thinking they're bullet proof and ignoring safety protocols. Be honest with yourself.

Fuel available, covid will burn? Who is writing your script? How melodramatic. It was predicted by many contributors that as soon as people adjusted to covid isn't going to kill them, there would be another, but worse variant. Yeah, well.. here it is. No one has died that did not have underlaying issues. and, the original pandemic has now been described as a bad cold. Straight out of CBC, https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/why-covid-19-may-now-feel-like-a-bad-cold-with-headache-runny-nose-among-most-reported-symptoms-1.6069831
Hanley got a chance to push his personal agenda.. he LOVES those masks... put one on everyone, forever. Silver gets a chance to push his face on the news twice a week and not have to answer questions like: are we broke? Living on our line of credit?
Stay at homers get to stay at home and not have to justify it. But, all the rest of us are out there, business as usual. Workers are working, campers are camping, travelers are traveling.. 500 people staying home with the flu..or a bad cold..everyone is happy.
BTW, who is out at night, and stealing from campsites, from car's, try an open door here and there.. just stop that crap. Someone knows who is doing this.. report them.

I am relieved to see the Government and Hanley holding the line on no new restrictions (although Doris Bill made it sounds like it was March 2020 all over again). I am certainly seeing calls for restrictions out there including calls to cancel summer camps. I think that is a mistake.
Periodic COVID outbreaks followed by testing, tracing and isolating are what life is going to look like for the foreseeable future and we can't let life pass us by because of a risk that is now drastically reduced. If you have a low risk tolerance generally or misperceive the risk of COVID to be higher than it is perhaps you should just stay at home.
