Games committee pleased by what it saw

If anyone had apprehensions about a visit this week from the 2027 Canada Games Council’s bid evaluation committee, he or she can rest easy.

By Whitehorse Star on October 14, 2022

If anyone had apprehensions about a visit this week from the 2027 Canada Games Council’s bid evaluation committee, he or she can rest easy.

“There are no concerns as of yet, though we still have questions to ask,” committee chair Anthony Everett told reporters late Wednesday afternoon on the second floor of the Canada Games Centre (CGC).

“We have seen a lot of hospitality. We are encouraged by many of the elements we learned about today,” added the Nanaimo, B.C. resident.

Eight committee members spent three days meeting various city, government and First Nations officials.

They also toured existing facilities and learned more about planned new facilities should the city be awarded the mammoth athletics event.

At its Sept. 26 meeting, city council opted to commit $11 million to the Games should they be held here.

In a letter sent to the city earlier this year, Community Services Minister Richard Mostyn proposed a $17-million city contribution.

Council was told the Yukon government has asked Ottawa for a $150-million contribution to the extravaganza.

On Wednesday, Everett was asked why no other jurisdiction has bid to hold the event.

It was Yukoners’ choice to step up, he said, adding organizers ideally rotate the Games among small, medium and large-sized jurisdictions.

Yukoners will learn in early December whether they will host the Games, he added.

Moments earlier, committee members had the opportunity to participate in an Arctic sports demonstration at the CGC (see photo spread, p. 10).

Everett was asked about that event being part of a potential Games spectacle in Whitehorse.

“I would hope we could consider that,” he said. “This is new for us.

“It looks like an exciting opportunity for the athletes to do sports.”

Four sheets of ice would be required for the Games.

Demolishing the 36-year-old Takhini Arena and building two new sheets of ice on that site would cost about $111 million.

Everett said the committee has no preference on whether that’s done, or whether the arena is substantially renovated and another complex built beside it.

“It’s for the community and territory to do what is best for the legacy,” he said.

In terms of the potential Games’ contribution to the cause of reconciliation with Indigenous Canadians, Everett said, “Whitehorse has a compelling story that corporate Canada will need to respect.

“ ... the host committee has put forth a very strong message.”

He also cited the “guidance and leadership” Whitehorse bid committee chair Piers McDonald has been able to bring to the cause due to his decades of living here.

McDonald, meanwhile, told reporters, “Planning is still underway and there are agreements to be struck with governments as to who does what, and we will wait and see the (committee’s) voters’ response.

“ ... There is much to do and different tasks to undertake,” McDonald added, such as the provision of food services and transportation.

As well, trying to raise $12 million in corporate sponsorships “will not be easy,” he conceded.

“With some good hard work and creativity, we should be able to do the job.”

Mostyn said in a statement the Yukon government “is pleased to welcome the Canada Games Council bid evaluation committee to the territory to conduct a site evaluation for the 2027 Canada Winter Games.

“Thank you to Piers McDonald and the rest of the bid committee who have worked hard to lay out a clear vision for what the City of Whitehorse could offer as the host of the 2027 Canada Winter Games,” Mostyn added.

“Our government fully supports the concept of co-hosting these Games with the city. I look forward to the results of the committee’s visit and to continue working with our federal, municipal and First Nations partners to make the bid committee’s full vision a reality.”

Yukon MP Brendan Hanley said “it is with great excitement that we welcome the Canada Games Council bid evaluation committee to Whitehorse for their site visit.

“As demonstrated from hosting these games 15 years ago, a successful bid for Whitehorse to host the 2027 Canada Winter Games would once again open the door to positive social, economic, tourism and infrastructure benefits.

“I look forward to continued momentum in this space and the committee’s upcoming decision,” Hanley said.

Mayor Laura Cabott called Whitehorse “a beautiful community with vibrant culture, contagious community spirit, and exciting opportunity.

“The 2027 Canada Winter Games would give the city of Whitehorse the chance to shine on a national stage, and bring in economic activity valued at over $100 million.

“The city would also see legacy investments that support housing affordability, athletic development, and community growth,” the mayor added.

“We are ready to welcome the Games to Whitehorse and look forward to the bid evaluation committee’s decision in the coming months.”

The city hosted the 2007 Canada Winter Games, for which the now-dismantled Stan McCowan Arena in Porter Creek was used.

My conflict of interest and cash grab alarm bells are deafening.

The ease at which council supported this CWG bid should be a concern for all taxpayers in Whitehorse.

Here is the city contemplating hosting the CWG, and as we speak, the city’s operations manager is going before city council begging for more funds to keep up with snow removal.
It’s like a homeowner filling their driveway with a fancy car and truck but can’t afford the heating bills.

There is a bigger story here. on Oct 18, 2022 at 9:15 am

Takhini Arena was overbuilt initially. The equipment has the capacity to run two rinks. It always has. The option to build a secound rink was always there. It does not need to be torn down. Something is going on behind the scenes and someone is going to make good money off of this scam. Whitehorse doesn’t need another Sima or GCG that runs on a deficit. Taxes will need to go up to pay for this after the games.

What our different levels of governments here fail to appreciate (regardless of political stripes), is that constituents just want services to work and laws to be enforced.
We don’t need the grandiose legacy (vanity) projects that our leaders feel are needed.
We want snow cleared.
We want bylaws enforced.
We want our streets and hiways to be in good shape.
We want our kids to be safe.
We need to host the games like we needed our lacklustre college to become an even more lacklustre university.

Are the taxpayers pleased to even see the games committee?
Of course it’s rhetorical.

If Takhini areas has to be demolished because its 36 years old, then the Law Center building needs to be demolished because it's the same age. Anchorage uses the same arenas we played at in a 1980 tournament. There is nothing wrong with Takhini arena..,,

Now I wonder who stands to benefit from this spending level... NVD, Kobayashi Zedda Architects?

As I’ve said before the city the territory and the country are screwed and the common denominator is the Liberal NDP alliance and Peirs and Brendan are NDP and Liberal hacks. If anyone has been here long enough to remember Piers and the NDP when they we’re in power it was a disaster of spending millions unnecessary and when they were voted out they headed to Alberta to enjoy their retirement in a conservative province….we are so f@&ked.

We need at least one politician with some honesty, integrity and foresight to step up and lead a taxpayer revolt to stop this obscene waste of money on a two-week sports party, and to prevent the wasteful, wanton destruction of an arena with many years of useful life remaining.

This is another case of self-aggrandizing elites with no skin in the game lining their pockets, and making decisions that the working class and their children will pay for, one way or another.

CWG has become too big, time to split it into smaller sport clusters and spread them around instead of all being together in one place.

Just think, come January the carbon tax is going up yet again. We need a huge injection of reality. I honestly cannot see that happening given the current environment we are in these days. Sad, truly sad...

Here is a very candid and honest assessment.

We do not need the CW Games or the false economic assessment of the benefits. We do not need another arena. Takhini arena is just fine.
What we do need is an honest effort to resolve many of the problems that are commonplace in Whitehorse and the Yukon. We all know what they are.

We need a new mayor and council and it seems many voices of reason are correct, some Liberal MPs should go and perhaps a new territorial government is in order.

The false economy and entitlement in Yukon is disgusting, it's time for us to pay our own way,

@ Moose101 and all of us: How is this happening? It's happening because all we are doing is ranting on this blog. Most don't know where to turn but maybe we could be stuffing COW mail bag with letters to councilors stating a resounding 'No!' Not much point in a referendum when results are often ignored so, how about a petition.
Next thought is leave Takhini arena alone and ask YFN members if they are interested in building an ice arena? They are big on hockey and it could be used later for their independent youth & adult coaching programs.

Put the money into housing. With a recession coming this is not smart move. The cost per family is going be $3000. Help families, seniors, street people, homeless, disabilities, low-income earners, first, but no???

There should be a major focus on ensuring that so called “legacy investments” leave behind a a boatload of benefits for all Yukoners, and not just another sporting venue for select individuals to enjoy.

How about putting all that money and effort into getting rid of the 405 Alexander St. Disaster and relocating it elsewhere so it doesn’t shut down struggling businesses, build housing so that people can actually afford to have a roof over their heads, or donate money to the food banks. But No, let the rich watch sports and turn a blind eye AGAIN! It’s the same old story up here, put it all into sports and ignore the real problems. Sorry I moved back.

What should this group be called? Not a gaggle..thats geese.. a pride, would be lions.. there's a dray of squirrels.. hmm.. a crash of Rhino's..a cackle of hyena's.. but, but.. maybe they could be a 'quiver' https://grammar.yourdictionary.com/word-lists/list-of-names-for-groups-of-animals.html Something to set them apart of the multitude of committee's, groups, advisories, councils..etc. The headlines could read The "Games Quiver is pleased by what it saw".

Years ago, one of my children borrowed money for a down payment on a house. Instead, my child bought a new vehicle. When my Dr. asked about cardio exercise, i just remember the day, said child drove up in that vehicle and my heart starts pounding. I kind of feel like that when i consider all of this taxpayer money going out at a time when our standard of living has fallen so far, so many people in need, and I'm talking about everyone. That guy with the gov job, living in Arkell, is no better off than the guy living in a trailer. One used to buy a steak, now buying a hotdog, the other used to buy a hot dog, now at the food bank. No one is getting out of this scot free, (except those dudes and duetters we voted in. (The way they blow tax money is akin to paying for a screwing.) This is such a bad time for these games, anywhere in Canada, but especially here..because i live here and in a country that purports to be a free and financially stable democracy, i have a right to expect, grocery shelves to be well stocked, business to be paying a decent wage, jobs. Seniors should have a right to teeth, hearing aides. Children, the right to grow up free of all fears..I heard of a 6 year old getting counselling, he overhead his parents talking about their finances and became to afraid he wasn't going to have a bed to sleep in that he wanted to die.. so, yeah..there are a multitude of needs at this time that could be serviced with that kind of money.. I'm not saying never do the games..I am saying, not right now. This money isn't free. The City will borrow over $11 million. Renters and home owners are going to pay that.. all Canada will have to pay $150 plus, millions.

Let’s ask our First Nations community members what they would like their portion of this $150 million spent on with regards to reconciliation.

Maybe they’d rather have teachers, mental health and addictions counselors, housing support, safe roads, a doctor and a nurse who are not overworked, and a hospital bed available when needed.

Perhaps one afternoon of “arctic games” demonstrations is not a good return on such a large investment of taxpayer money?
It’s like we think the economy is great and inflation is just a short term problem.

I’m I the only one who thinks tearing down a 36 year old perfectly usable arena is extremely wasteful. For some reason we seem to live in a disposable society. Especially when government(s) are buying votes and patting themselves on the back. Why are we not thinking of putting an arena near Whistlebend/ Porter Creek area? Keep the sheet of ice at Takhini and the 2 at Canada Games Center. Look how narrow minded they were when they built the CGC. Hardly any spectator seating. Could end up the same way with the new. Remember, these people in charge really are not that smart.
