A Whitehorse man remains in the intensive care unit at a Vancouver hospital with his wife at his side following a motorcycle crash here last Sunday.
Meanwhile, friends and family members are working hard to help out his family of five with everything from childcare to a fundraising campaign aimed at assisting with expenses.
“Right now, there’s no income,” Kim Nugent said in an interview this morning from Ontario.
Nugent is Corey Kirkpatrick’s mother-in-law.
While she and her fiancé are doing everything they can for her daughter Ashley, Corey and their three kids, she said expenses are mounting for the family.
As of this morning, a total of $2,415 has come in for the young family through 40 donations through an online campaign at www.gofundme.com/tqdbrw.
Ashley runs a day home, but has been in Vancouver with the Kirkpatricks since Sunday’s collision.
The injured man’s 998 Honda CBR600 collided with a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado on Hamilton Boulevard near Falcon Drive. RCMP are investigating the collision.
Along with all the usual household bills are additional accommodation costs Ashley is facing right now staying in Vancouver.
The accident left Kirkpatrick, who was wearing a helmet at the time, with a broken femur that he’s since had surgery on, as well as injuries to a knee.
“That went well,” Nugent said of the surgery.
He will have to have further surgery on his knee. That surgery can be done at a later date in Whitehorse, she said.
What’s complicating matters is a case of pneumonia that’s taken its toll on Kirkpatrick’s lungs, sending him back to ICU for the time being.
“We really don’t know at this point how long he’s going to remain (in Vancouver),” Nugent said.
While Corey and Ashley stay in Vancouver, friends in Whitehorse are providing excellent care to their three kids, Nugent said.
Speaking to her grandkids Thursday, Nugent said she could hear they are really starting to miss their mom and dad, who they had Skyped with earlier in the day.
“I keep trying to lift their spirits,” she said.
Corey also seems to be doing the same as best he can from Vancouver, where he was able to make a video for the kids, assuring the youngsters that he’s OK.
“He’s amazing,” Nugent said of her son-in-law.
It’s times like this that being away from her grandchildren and family “is absolutely devastating,” she said, at the same time praising the support system the family has in Whitehorse.
Nugent and her fiancé had offered to put off their wedding that’s planned for June in favour of having Nugent come to the territory to help the family.
Ashley, however, instructed her not to do that, wanting the family to have something to look forward to this summer.

I was so glad that I, Corey's Aunt, could make it over from Vancouver Island, to see Corey make some recovery, although, I do know it is going to take much more time to recover fully
