Yukoners are rushing to help a Whitehorse family financially cope after a six-year-old boy was badly hurt from being struck by a vehicle last Sunday.

As of late this morning, a gofundme campaign had raised $66,606 from 665 donors for the family of Edgar Colby, who is in a coma in a Vancouver hospital.

The goal is $80,000.

The youngster was struck on Range Road near the Takhini Arena.

“If you know Edgar T. Colby, you know JOY!” Kathryn Colby, a family relation, wrote on social media this week.

“This rambunctious, smart (more on that later), hilarious and sunny six-year-old babe escaped the yard and ran into the busy road without looking, and was struck immediately by a car, sending him sailing nearly 100 feet – his little boots blew off and he landed in a heap on the road in front of his 10-year-old brother, Errol.

“Thanks to the clear-thinking driver, and the other bystanders there, our sunny baby was en route in an ambulance within moments, which later led to a full CT and a medivac jet flight to BC Children’s Hospital with his mom.”

The youngster’s mother is Hilary Obermair, and his father is Jonathan Colby.

Both are with the boy, and said they are grateful for the care their son is receiving at the hospital.

The boy’s best chances for a good outcome hinge on rest, to help his brain heal.

“Eddie’s big, brilliant brain has been badly rattled, and has suffered some damage, but we just don’t know how much – only time will tell,” said Kathryn. “He’s in a coma and will take a long time to wake up.”

He has three siblings at home.

“His parents are utterly shattered and are bedside with our little elf and won’t be leaving anytime soon,” she added.

“Both Mom and Dad have entire households to run at home in Whitehorse, and no one is going back to work anytime soon – those kids gotta eat, and the grandparents could use support.

“We have all experienced the insulation of a wonderful family and community – and if you can, please support our family to stay bedside with Eddie for as long as it takes for him to get the care he needs.”

Donations can be made through https://www.gofundme.com/f/eddie-needs-you. Or, e-transfers can be made to karcolby@gmail.com (the password is Edgar).

Kathryn is keeping a complete record of all donations and people as well as other offers of assistance.

Edgar was struck at approximately 12:15 p.m. last Sunday.

The RCMP are continuing their investigation, but have said alcohol and drugs were not factors in the incident.

No charges against the driver have been laid.

Considering the comments that have since been deleted by the star, it's very fair to say that comments like Bards do not deserve the benefit of the doubt. On every social media platform, comments like that are more often than not accompanied by admonishment of the parents and some sanctimonious declaration of blame.

So, you know.... maybe you should just say less.

Eddie is young and has many years ahead of him. Hopefully he pulls through. I also feel for the driver. Decades ago a bicycle rider swerved into my path at the last second. I found out later the bicycle rider had an epileptic seizure. Thankfully the person was OK but was taken to the hospital. It is traumatic.

@Hmmmm,
I'm pretty sure Bard does feel bad for everyone involved, but it was good for him to make a specific acknowledgment to the driver. Feeling bad for everybody involved almost goes without saying, but drivers in situations like this are often forgotten.

Not everybody has to be acknowledged in every statement. There's a time to acknowledge one person and there's a time to acknowledge another.

Bard,
I think it's ok to feel bad for everyone involved.

Yup.. I donated. I don't know that i believe in the God of my youth. The dude with the open arms and long hair. But i do believe in a greater power, and I do not believe life, birth, the sun, the moon.. love, galaxies is just one big cosmic accident. That being said, I choose to call that higher power.. God.. and I pray to that power for this little boy, for the family. For the driver. He is living every drivers worst nightmare. And parents too.
