Hoodies and sweatshirts were stolen from a downtown store early Tuesday morning.

At about 4 a.m., a witness called Whitehorse RCMP, reporting two suspects running away from Franchise Footwear on Fourth Avenue, possibly carrying merchandise, Whitehorse RCMP said in a news release issued Tuesday afternoon.

One suspect was last seen running down Jarvis Street toward the 202 Motor Inn, and the other was seen heading north on Fourth.

They have not yet been located. RCMP and Forensic Identification Services are still investigating.

The store’s manager declined to comment when reached by the Star yesterday.

In a photo posted on the store’s Instagram account, it appears the suspects broke in through a panel of glass in the door.

The manager said on social media he is offering a $1,000 reward for information about the suspects.

He wrote that Crooks & Castles hoodies and crewneck sweatshirts were stolen.

Several break and enters have been reported by Whitehorse businesses in recent months, according to police. Items stolen include liquor, automotive batteries and bicycles.

In three cases, suspects have been arrested and are facing charges in court.

Police are looking for possible connections between the incidents.

They encourage the public to report any suspicious activity, as well as ensure they keep their property secured, and record serial numbers where possible.

@pointless

I 100% agree, that's why I'm so thankful for those who are RCMP.

To concerned citizen:

YTG pays the police contract for the RCMP. City council can give input to the detachment commander but ultimately YTG pays the bill. FYI, the City cannot afford the policing contract.

Why would you want to be a police officer anymore? Look at all the criminals fighting back because their rights are violated (even though they put themselves in the situation in the first place). They probably have to spend more money on litigation defending their own personnel and can't afford to put more out there.

Our judicial system is so backwards and no wonder so many more crimes are being committed. You can practically get away with murder these days.

The irony is that if innocents citizens (the victims of these crimes) took these matters in to their own hands, they would probably get charged worse than the person originally putting them out.

This rash of crime is becoming very bad. Why don't we get updates of numbers (burglaries, theft, assault) from the RCMP? I've seen it in other towns posted in the paper. Why do we still only ever have 3 RCMP officers on duty at night. Given our high crime activity, does that not warrant extra members? Who is paying for this? If it's the city, why aren't they taking this to task with the RCMP? If it's the territory, same question? Our RCMP members do a fantastic job, if they are backed up by their community. We need our community representatives to start stepping up and pressing the RCMP brass for more boots on the ground. Our businesses and residents will only suffer if those responsible for the RCMP contract for protection, sit idle by when crimes are increasing.
