A local man who thought he spotted someone walking down the street with his belongings is now the owner of a sore head, but no stolen items.

He was on Jeckell Street in the Fourth Avenue area Wednesday morning when he spotted a young woman wearing jewelry he believed to be the same as the ornaments that had gone missing from his home.

The young woman had been at his residence some time ago, and it wasn't until after she left he discovered jewelry was missing.

The man and his friends approached the young woman, who was with a male friend carrying her backpack.

The two men ended up in a scrap. The male trying to recover his belongings received a couple of punches to the head, Whitehorse RCMP Cpl. Ken Putnam said this morning.

Meanwhile, the girl with the jewelry vanished.

Her male friend was arrested, but later released without charges.

Though the man looking for the stolen goods reported being assaulted to the police, an independent witness' recollections mean charges aren't likely, Putnam said.

The jewelry is still at large.
