CLEANUP OPERATION – A Hazco crew is cleaning up the old Whitehorse Esso service station site on Second Avenue earlier this week. The ground will have to pass oil contamination tests before the lot can be sold.

After getting under way last week, work is continuing to clean up the former site of the Whitehorse Esso gas station on Second Avenue.

After closing and demolishing the station a couple of years ago, Imperial Oil Ltd. is excavating the property and backfilling, project manager Linda Eastcott said in an interview Wednesday.

Imperial didn't get around to doing the work last year when it was originally planned, Eastcott said.

Along with excavating and backfilling, the company is also having the soil tested first through a mobile lab on-site, with those results confirmed through another lab at a later date.

As of yet, no problems have been found with the soil, Eastcott said.

After all the work is done, the property will be sold.

She would not say how much is being spent on the work, though she did note: "It's not cheap.”

Great, more 2$ condos to come that keep up the tradition of destroying the look of downtown whitehorse. How about you just build a roundabout there, I'm sure all the hippies up here will be supportive. As the history of this town gets lost forever the march to turn whitehorse into a suburb of toronto marchs on.
