A 24-year-old former resident of Dawson City was killed last Saturday after he was struck by a vehicle in Burnaby, B.C.

Matthew Webster was declared deceased at the scene on Marine Way in Burnaby at approximately 2:30 a.m.

He was the son of Art Webster, a former Yukon NDP cabinet minister and Dawson City mayor, and of Kathy Webster of Dawson.

The Burnaby RCMP, New Westminister Police and British Columbia Ambulance personnel attended the scene.

A press release from the Burnaby RCMP indicates Matthew Webster was running across Marine Way when he was struck by a vehicle travelling east toward New Westminister.

At the time of the accident, there were two vehicles travelling east. The vehicle in the centre lane was approximately two to three car lengths ahead of the vehicle in the curb lane.

The driver in the centre lane was able to brake and swerve at the last moment to avoid striking Webster, but the driver in the curb lane was unable to see him and could not avoid him, police said.

Alcohol and speed are not believed to have been factors in the tragedy. Road and weather conditions were good at the time of the collision, says the release.

A full mechanical inspection will be done on the vehicle involved in the accident.

A spokesperson from the Burnaby RCMP said Wednesday afternoon an autopsy will likely not be performed.

Because the investigation is still in its early stages, the spokesperson was unable to confirm if charges will be laid.
