Forbid hogs in our area, council urged

Two residents of Raven’s Ridge addressed city council Monday to request the city prohibit a neighbouring property from adding hogs to their list of farm animals they’re raising.

Two residents of Raven’s Ridge addressed city council Monday to request the city prohibit a neighbouring property from adding hogs to their list of farm animals they’re raising.

Kevin Embacher told council hogs are exceptionally smelly, noisy, destructive, and attract an inordinate number of bugs.

“These environmental conditions spilling onto others’ property and into their homes is unacceptable, and certainly not in alignment with an urban lifestyle,” he said.

Embacher said he understands a neighbouring property owner is planning to bring in two or three hogs.

But he asked council to maintain the approved agricultural permit for two goats and a number of birds, but to disallow the addition of hogs.

“It is my understanding the broader community shares our opinion.” Embacher said.

“The addition of two or three hogs is, however, excessive, and damaging, with lasting and severe consequences to the local aquifer, residents’ welfare, the McIntyre Creek watershed and wildlife.”

He said the property owner in question has recently installed an electric fence, presumably to accommodate a hog pasture, but the fence can present a health hazard, as there are children in the neighbourhood.

The fence is also out of character for the neighbourhood, he said, noting the city bylaw says fences must be consistent with the character of the zoning.

He said the fence is 10 metres from their house and just inches away from their driveway, play area and garden.

The planned hog pasture is situated fewer than 20 metres from their home on a sloping, rocky, very small area of land, Embacher said.

He said the area is too small to support hogs, and would present an inhumane environment for the animals.

Lots in Raven’s Ridge are between 0.6 and 0.8 hectares in size (1.5 to two acres.)

Sarah Johnson told council she was there to present a petition signed by 40 residents of Raven’s Ridge concerned over the hog issue.

Raven’s Ridge, she said, does allow for hobby agriculture, and city officials have told them hogs are permitted in the subdivision.

“Introducing swine on small lots in close proximity to others is not representative of an urban lifestyle,” Johnson said.

Hogs, she told council, produce between between one and four kilograms of manure per day, according to Statistics Canada.

“This waste is more akin to human waste than bovine, and is not managed through a waste treatment system but goes directly into the ground as a nitrate contaminator,” Johnson said.

“Moreover, referencing the Canadian Small Scale Pig Farming Manual from 2021, the planned pasture’s size, grade, ground and quality is inadequate for raising two or three hogs.

“The imposing noise, smell, inappropriate pasture, significant nitrate loading and erosion present a major health and safety concern for our community and the surrounding area,” she told council.

Johnson said hogs are a significant bear attractant.

Wildwise Yukon, she added, states that small livestock such as pigs are highly attractive to wildlife, including bears.

“Pigs would greatly increase the likelihood of dangerous bear interactions with neighbourhood residents, young children, users of the easement trail, Mount Mac trails, the Copperbelt Museum and the neighbourhood bus stop,” she said.

Johnson noted most Raven’s Ridge residents are on private wells, though the property owners in question are on water delivery.

The city has visited the area to get a better context of the situation, she said.

I have absolutely no dog in this race, as I do not live in this neighborhood, but it got me interested on the logistics and legalities of raising hogs.
It seems this is a big venture, regardless of animal numbers, and to do it properly would negate any benefit of having home grown pork.
I was actually astounded by the numbers of rules & regulations that exist even for the small scale operation. That being said it's good that they focus on the well being of the animal.

Have a look at the PDF link, if you think the neighbor would be able to accommodate all that on their lot, while surrounded by other residential lots, and not be a nuisance then by all means they should be allowed to do that. Unfortunately, I can't see that happening, I hope I am wrong and they will be able to do it safely and without impacting their neighbors negatively.

Lastly, I would prefer to have a neighbor with 3 hogs, then someone with 50 stray dogs barking & sh**ting all over the place. Whatever happened to Shelley and her dog operation? Hmmmm.

Oh my!!! It's the pig apocalypse. I'm guessing this is all about a couple of people raising a couple of pigs for fun and some home grown meat. They're probably going to be there for a grand total of four or five months, and the people will probably get tired of it after a year or two, and it'll never happen again. Not the end of the world really.

I think all residents should be allowed to raise livestock.

With inflation its harder to get by. Sure there should be a cap on the number of animals raised by species, but 2 to 4 pigs and 2 horses per household should not be an issue.

You are not saving money by raising your own food stock pigs. The costs of heating, feeding, and sheltering pigs in our northern climate is prohibitive for small scale operations.

There are lots of squirrels however. Perhaps you can take some archery lessons and be like Katniss Everdeen in the L-NDP Hunger Games. Then you can run around everywhere singing This Girl is on Fire…

Just a reminder for all you slower people out there - The current sociopolitical reality is deliberate and it will be deliberately made worse until “you” are broken. Trudeau has been very clear about this! You will own nothing.

@not a NIMBY “ More outsiders moving in and complaining maybe?”

Get a grip - all the Star commentators are apparently pureblood sourdoughs who were all here the longer than you or anyone else- and all they do is complain non-stop. It’s clearly the Yukon pastime.

The Yukon purity test is “how long have you lived here”. It’s embarrassing. No one outside of this tiny corner of the country behaves this way. No one cares in Alberta if you’re 5th gen or just moved there. Only people with nothing else to measure their self worth with (I mean why bother with accomplishments you’ve actually earned besides just existing) resort to years spent in an urban backwater to back up their opinions LOL

And remember kids - downvoting is a form of complaining - so when you press thumbs down you’re just proving me right. Appreciate it!

With the rate of inflation, carbon taxes, etc. and their impact on food security, I am surprised that there aren't more urban farmers raising livestock in Whitehorse. It is a pretty smart way to save on food costs if you have enough space and personal time to commit to the endeavor.

You may recall back in 2018 feral boars were in the news and caused great concern for the people living out in Mendenhall as they roamed and plundered gardens and crops. The only difference between a feral hog and a family pig is an unclosed gate.

The pig owners should offer their neighbors some fresh bacon. That'll stop their complaining :D

Man you City People sure are out of touch with how food gets to your table. I seen a poster in a Mohawk Band office in Quebec back in early 1990’s. Had a Mohawk woman wrapped in a blanket.
It read “Only when the last trees and animals are gone, will you realize you can’t eat money”.
This kinda suits the Posh crew of Highly Educated, Heavily Indebted group in that neighbourhood.

Perhaps a larger issue is the hogs in the trough getting a 14 percent raise taking their incomes to 134k for doing jack?

As for the hogs in the article, let's just let sleeping hogs lie, shall we? Soon enough nobody will be smelling anything if I understand this mrna stuff most of us got stuffed with.

Wow, Settle down Whitey. 2-3 hogs for the 3-4 months isn’t going to pollute your wells.
Keep flying to Mexico, buying at China Suppy stores and hold speeches about Pigs and bottled water.

You want a farm? Buy a property zoned agricultural and have at it.
You want to live in residential, then follow the zoning regulations and quit trying to get amendments and annoying your neighbours.
The City should follow their bylaws and be proactive in their enforcement and quit the whole complaint driven process which puts neighbour against neighbour.

Wow it's hard to listen to the nimby....it would likely be harder to endure the pig farmers 'but we'll go hungry'.
In the end, it's about, I own this and I see it this way....because it suits Me.
Old way of settling a dispute by squaring off in the street is likely unheard of for either of these folks but if they do I'm going with the farmer.

Gee...today I am with Mr. Facts!
Described quite a few of folks in my hood too, and no curly tails on them?

Why not just have the pig, hog, merely identify as a human, fill its skull with piercings, cover a few square feet of said non binary swine in tattoos and BINGO...problem solved.

We have many hogs feeding outta our trough on 2nd ave, I see no reason RR cannot “tolerate” some there.
Come to think of it, we have so many truffle hungry hogs in our hall, so many filthy pigs running feral in town doing exactly all those things...
like someone left the pen open as the town is covered in 💩

At least hogs don't drink, drug and party all hours of the night, then sleep while the tax payers have to go work to support them while they subsist on welfare. Gimme hogs any day. I was raised on a farm and believe me, hogs smell a lot better than what I have had to endure otherwise.

If the lots are zoned country residential then they are within their rights according to the City bylaw. Country residential are just that. This is not an urban living zone, if you want that move to Whistle Bend.

Pigs are actually very clean animals, stupid, but clean. The do wallow and their manure has a distinct smell. Because it's such great manure, farmers love it. I would be OK with my neighbours keeping a few pigs, providing I had the manure for my garden! Pigs may be better than some neighbours.

Pigs in the neighborhood is going a bit far.. If this dude wants a small farm to sustain himself and family, He needs to move out of the City Limits.

Personally, I don't like the farm animals in or close to some ones house. Chickens are one thing, a hog is another. Goats are also another. Don't ask me to go cold and conserve heat when there is an electric fence and possibly electric heating in the winter for the animals. Jeez, i have smelt a pig wallow, and the complainant is right, on a hot day that this is going to stink all the way to town.
