The territory is officially mourning the death of Peter Jenkins, the former Yukon Party cabinet minister and longtime mayor of Dawson City.

Jenkins died in a Vancouver hospital last weekend at the age of 77.

“In memory of his lengthy public service, flags at the Government of Yukon Main Administration Building will be flown at half-mast for seven days,” Premier Sandy Silver said Monday.

“I encourage all Yukoners to reflect on Peter’s legacy as a passionate leader of the Yukon.

“Peter was always happy to share insights and knowledge with others, and I value the advice he offered me from when I first became the MLA for Klondike right through to serving as premier,” Silver added.

“In addition to his political career, Peter was also a well-known and successful entrepreneur and hotel owner, remembered fondly by many Yukoners for his desire to give back to his local community.”

Jenkins was Dawson’s mayor from 1980 to 1994, and from 2009 to 2012. He was a Yukon Party MLA and later an independent MLA from 1996 to 2006.

The late politician’s family is planning a celebration of his life some time in 2022.

How did the flags go half mast when they've been that way since June?

In case y’all wish to track flags, the one that matters, our maple leaf has been ordered flaccid since June 23rd 2021...noted the year in the event it never goes back up.

There will be no other notable Canadians until that virtue reserve (pun not intended) back up to liberal standards.

What a pathetic state of our country, thanks Pierre.
Makes the movie the omen relevant again, his alleged son.
Imagine, a multi time Blackface sitting Prime Minister ordering our flag down...no imagination needed...

Please, someone make Orwell fiction again...the gaslighting is purdy rich.

Flags are already at half mast aren’t they still? Flags will have little to no significance unless somebody takes a stand and gets it figured out.

I’ve been wondering when the flags would go back to full staff to start honouring others that deserve to be recognized. The flags have been down for a very long time. I see Peter Jenkins will be honoured but the flags have not been raised for a very long time either so how do we know when Peter will be honoured?

Great person with clear sense direction. Great friend. His last comment to me a short time ago was stay out of politics. But never got the why! Rest in peace Peter.
Thanks for all your greatness to all Yukoners future.
