Teslin Tlingit citizens elected their new leaders on Tuesday: Naa Sháade Háni (chief), Eric Morris and deputy Naa Sháade Háni Alex Oakley.
Morris drew 122 votes, while candidates Robert Magill earned 52; John Peters Jr. 62 and Tod Smarch 55.
Morris served as chief from 2000 to 2008 and is a former grand chief of the Council of Yukon First Nations.
In 2009, he succeeded incumbent Rick O’Brien as regional vice-chief of the Assembly of First Nations.
In Tuesday’s election, Oakley earned 192 votes, while the other candidate for deputy, Carl Smarch, finished with 91.
Incumbent Chief Richard Sidney didn’t run for re-election.
Out of 608 eligible voters, 294 Teslin Tlingit citizens voted, representing 48 per cent of eligible voters.
Citizens were given many opportunities to vote and a variety of ways to cast their votes: two advance polls, proxy voting and special ballots as well as the actual voting day.
The governmental structure of the Teslin Tlingit Council (TTC) incorporates traditional Teslin Tlingit Clan culture into contemporary organizational and management principles.
Representation by the five Teslin Tlingit Clans is central to the TTC government structure.
A member of each Clan sits on the executive council, and five representatives are appointed by each Clan to form the general council.
