Yukon Wildland Fire Management crews responded to two new wildfires in the territory Wednesday.

Both fires were less than a hectare in size and believed to be human-caused, officials said today.

At about 5:20 p.m. a fire was reported burning near Christmas Creek along the Alaska Highway, 45 kilometres northwest of Haines Junction.

"The fire began after a cabin had caught fire and spread to nearby grass,” said duty officer David Milne.

"The fire was reported by travelers in the area, and once notified, firefighters from Haines Junction were immediately deployed by helicopter and were able to extinguish it.”

The second blaze discovered Wednesday was reported in the Carmacks district near Free Gold Mountain at 8 p.m. The fire was located near a mining camp approximately 50 kilometres northwest of Carmacks.

A crew from Pelly Crossing was deployed immediately and upon arrival, it was discovered that the fire had been extinguished by a mining crew. Wildland Fire Management were at the scene this morning to ensure it is completely out.

Meanwhile, good progress was made on the 41-hectare fire burning about nine kilometres southeast of Faro.

All containment goals were achieved Wednesday and no further growth was reported, officials said.

Today, 25 firefighters are on-site along with two helicopters. Those in the Faro area are advised that smoke may be visible depending on the fire activity.

Wildland Fire Management thank the public for their co-operation in reporting wildfires.

If you see a wildfire, call 1-888-798-FIRE (3473).

As the weather heats up over the next few days, the public is reminded that burning permits are now mandatory and available at fire district offices throughout the territory. Permits will be suspended if the fire danger rating is moderate or higher.

There have been five fires in the territory this year burning approximately 42 hectares of forest.
